I used to tell my gullible brother that in Super Mario Bros 3 you can get a secret Magic Whistle that takes you straight to World 8 if you finish World 1 without killing any enemies or bosses. I still remember watching him spend hours trying to get through the first Castle without killing the boss in the end, he would later get angry and just give up then go and play something else. I still haven't told him that I made it up just to watch him make a c**t of himself.
