  1. I think Falkirk will finish above us too. I think their squad this season is pretty comparable to ours last season, with us having the edge in goal, probably centre back and full back and the manager. They probably have a better midfield and up front. And scoring goals was our biggest problem this season, whereas Airdrie outscored us last season and finished in the top 4. They have some players who will be decent in the Championship (Lang, Spencer, Morrison, Miller) and the interesting thing will be if they can get a decent goalkeeper and if McIver can make the step up. Just hope it's not another Raith scenario and we lose all 4 to them...

  2. I don't think he's got a particular case this week (it's not after a midweek round or an international break) but Liverpool have played in a lot more 12.30 kick offs than all of the othe big clubs combined, they are usually games that are slow to get started which doesn't suit their style of play and Liverpool's average time between games is by far the shortest in the league (Man City are next though in this table; Sheffield Utd have the biggest break between games and it's not helped them at all since they're shite).

Sadiq Khan in danger in London?

GB News types saying that Hall was leading despite votes not being counted until tomorrow. Other loon balls calling conspiracy because it allows Khan to ballot stuff and get fake postal votes in. Think Khan will win by a good few % but it won't be a landslide.

  4. Popular ex-Labour, now independent, North East Mayor Jamie Driscoll loses to local Police Commissioner Kim McGuinness (fun fact, she's the sister of my wife's boss) in a slight shock although Labour were throwing everything at is as a Driscoll win would have been seen as a bit of an embarrassment for Starmer.

    Here’s a solid resource:

Generally, the polls are all over, it’s too far out, but movement for the past three months has been tightening.

Five thirty-eight used to be my go to bit since it's been bought over by ABC it doesn't seem to have as much detail or analysis. The stuff it does have is on a podcast and I'm not wanting to spend ~45 minutes listening to stuff where previously I could have a wee look at their graphs and analysis in my own time.

They were on 26pts after 10 games and have picked up 34 in their last 24. Dunno if it's a case of teams having worked them out or if the players are starting to resist the system now its not providing them with success. I thought Postecoglu's post match interviews last night were quite telling, it appeared he was saying the players weren't responding to instructions. If they've chucked it then he's in big trouble, because I'm not sure I can see him changing his style of play.

There was a well-shared video of him from Thursday's game where he could be seen shouting "just pass the fucking ball forward" as he watched one of his players play another safe, square ball.

  7. Houchen winning is a weird one. Seems to he popular still despite the massive shakiness with the Tees Freeport stuff. Standing as a Tory but not mentioning the party or the PM in his election material. Share going down but share of voters who voted in person (i.e. not postal votes) apparently up. It's a bonfire down there.

So we can’t see who voted for who in this poll?

I’d guess that those who voted for Kate Forbes will mainly comprise of people who don’t vote SNP.

I voted Forbes, not because I want her to win but because I think she might. The question was "who will be..." and not "who would you like..."

Not having the Dunfermline fans revisionism on Joe Chalmers, you were all liking him last season so we owe you f**k all…

Not all, I thought he was fine but not particularly good.

Anyway, Taylor Sutherland didn't play for the reserves on Tuesday afternoon and Chris Kane seemed to be saying his goodbyes when he was subbed off on Saturday so I expect the typing striker to start on Friday. The rest of the team will probably look very similar, so expect some slow plodding build up and Arsenal style goal kicks before we hoof it out for a throw in on half way anyway. 2-1 Ayr is my predicted outcome.

Despite the talk of wanting more attacking football, I honestly don't think McPake's aim is a defensive side. I think he wants to play 'nice' football, and wants his team to play attacking football but in 'the right way'. For whatever reason, we just don't have a team who can do that effectively and the result is the shitey, short and slow passing that we've seen for a lot of this season. As it happens, I don't think there's anything particularly nice about short passing football and would far rather we found a credible direct option and were able to hit teams with simple football and quick, direct attacks. The last thing I want to see is us setting up in a stupidly attack-minded setup and getting ripped apart, like the night at Starks when Crawford decided to change from very cautious to outrageously attacking, and ended up putting out a team that was as badly set up as any I can remember, leading to us losing 5-1.

From what I've seen this year, only Rhys McCabe has managed to get his team to be effective with the short stuff from the back. The main difference is that Airdrie are capable of moving the ball quickly, and it makes it hard to play against because if you press them, they can be good at using the space in behind that you leave when you press. However, when teams like us try it, the press is the obvious tactic because we have no quick option even if we beat the press. So pressing isn't really a dangerous tactic to use against us, as it is when you play Airdrie. [...] If McCann isn't allowed to play aggressively, he's not going to contribute much.

It was very noticeable in the last few seasons playing against Airdrie in that when we pressed them high we won it back a few times and created chances and even scored by turning it over 20-30 yards from goal. By the same token, they created and scored a couple of really nice goals by drawing us in and using the space. When Airdrie pressed us, we would often beat the first press but then the midfield (Chalmers, Allan, Hamilton, etc all guilty) wouldn't use the space left by the Airdrie players pushing up and instead it would go square and allow them to get back into shape. It totally negates the purpose of playing it short at the back, especially the stupid goal kick to the goalkeeper in his own six yard stuff we do just because Man City and Arsenal do it. Also agree about McCann - when he scored that goal in the Viaplay Cup through in Kirkcaldy at the start of the year (a bustling and physically imposing burst from the inside left channel and a good finish) I and many others thought this might be his breakout year. Instead he's been hamstrung slightly, and has lost all his confidence as a result.

For me, the best teams at this level get the ball from back to front quite quickly [...] In general though, our defenders and midfielders have been guilty of slowing the game down and letting opponents get set into shape, making them harder to break down. [...] I also think our passing in general is horrendous. At least 70% of our passes are behind players, which means they’re coming back to get the ball and receiving it with their back to goal, rather than running onto the ball. This kills any attacking momentum and gives defenders the advantage every single time.

It's really annoying how slow we are. I know I mentioned at the time but about the only time I lost the plot with Chalmers this season was in a game at EEP where McCann had the whole left side of the pitch to himself as the opposition right back had lost the ball at the edge of our box and they hadn't readjusted positionally yet. Instead it was the usual sideways 10 yard pass behind someone which caused them to stop their own run, turn back to control it and then pop it back to the back four. The initial option to McCann wasn't a difficult ball and had the square ball been ahead of its recipient then there was still a bit of space to exploit but that yard, yard and a half displacement made all the difference. Even on Saturday there we had a good break in the first half where a long ball over the top found Ritchie-Hosler in space. We didn't do it again the rest of the game, despite creating a really good chance off the back of it. So annoying.

  11. I think that something like this could work but it relies on the three behind the main striker chipping in with goals, or having a centre forward who can score 15-20 goals on their own.

That still has the likes of Chalmers, the youngsters from the reserves etc as other options should we change things. It isn't much of a change from the 3-4-2-1 McPake seems to prefer but means that Ritchie-Hosler can get further up the pitch, we don't need to rely on full backs for width and it gives Todd a settled position and role.

Announcing new kits while the seasons still going on👎

Used to be a big thing. Announce the new kit, wear it on the final day, sell a load for over the summer. Now most clubs announce in the summer, maybe have an open day or something, and then wear it pre-season (always depending on whether their supplier can send them enough kit!).

His football academy probably takes up most of his time though.

That's the reason Crawford isn't being kept on, isn't it? So I'd imagine the chances of Cardle coming in would be slim.

Must have imagined the new sponsorship deals this season.

Did it bring in six figures? Would they not have been agreed had we still had someone like Ross McArthur or Kip McBay or whomever in charge? Isn't that something that the commercial director would be doing anyway? And don't you remember the poor way the Legends Wall etc was handled? Would you say that Cook has provided value for money? I think there a lot of questions to be asked there. And even if there wasn't, I don't really care if we do have a new Asian noodle partner, I care about us doing things properly and getting an attractive, winning team on the park.
