With the 4 players you mentioned coming in particularly gilmour their all better than what we had at that time.

Its been over 2 years since mcleish left.

We've not lost any top players in that time. And none are close to retirement, bar maybe gordon or marshall.

So the rest of the young guys coming into or before their prime are now 2 years more experienced.

Add that all together and I don't think its at all unrealistic to say the squad and team is significantly better.

Worth remembering that Clarke played a part in making the squad and team "significantly better" (in your view) by persuading Dykes and Adams to play for Scotland.

There is also the possibility that us losing to Moldova leads to them finishing above the Faroe Islands which would be an absolute disaster for seeding purposes.

Moldova beat us 1-0 and lose 1-0 to Austria whilst the Faroes suffer 4-0 defeats in both Denmark and Israel would have Moldova 5th and our 6 points against the Faroes scrapped and replaced by only 3 against Moldova. Disaster.

I think a point will probably be enough to finish second because I don’t see Israel winning in Austria (although we shouldn’t count our chickens because Israel are an up and coming team whereas Austria are a descending team) but a defeat in Moldova would be a disaster for many reasons.

In that scenario, Israel would finish second (and the seeding point rendered moot) if they avoid defeat in Austria. If Austria beat Israel and we finished second with our current points total, it's unlikely we would be seeded even if the Faroes stayed above Moldova.

I mind a few months ago SSN were running with the story that Germany were in danger of not qualifying having won one and lost one in their opening 2 games.  They were the first European nation to qualify and are probably going to win the group by 10 points, whereas England, as usual, are flattering to deceive in qualifying.

Binning Jogi Low and replacing him with Hansi Flick has helped.

I would support a boycott, but I think the time for it has passed. It should have been done on a confederation wide basis when it was announced that Qatar would be hosting, as that might have made a difference. I don’t think Scotland, in isolation, boycotting will make any real difference.

Elite football is absolutely up to it’s eyes in incredibly dodgy stuff, and it’ll take a lot more than Scotland boycotting a World Cup to change that - not that that means it’s not worthwhile.

The reason the South African boycott worked is because every credible cricket and rugby playing country went along with it, with odd exceptions (rebel tours).

You would need something like most of Europe boycotting a World Cup to destroy its credibility. That's been threatened as a nuclear option to stop FIFA pushing through the idea to hold it every two years.

Yep, the various football associations should have called it out when all the reports of corruption came to light.

Probably couldn't because they were up their necks in it as well. England offered 8 days before the vote (2018 and 2022 were voted on at the same time) to play Thailand in a friendly, then withdrew the offer three weeks after the vote as a) they had lost and b) Thailand didn't vote for them. The FA chairman later said it was a form of bribery.

What do the stats firm reckon now?

    ~15% (after the Faroes)

By getting to the playoffs we would effectively be in a cup semi-final, but we would be underdogs against most of the teams that are likely to be in the draw. That drags what would be a 25% chance if all of the teams were the same standard down to 15%. Getting seeded would help a bit - home advantage in the semi, and would mean avoiding any big hitters that might drop into 2nd (e.g. Spain) in that round.

  7. To put it another way - we will very likely need to avoid defeat v Denmark to be seeded. The Moldova game only counts for securing second place, because they'll almost certainly finish bottom (3 points and 7 goals behind the Faroes with two games to go).

Yeah he’s verging into Shankland territory at the moment. Deserved his initial call-up but legitimate questions over whether he was a flash in the plan. Three goals in 13 games this season, against Andorran farmers, Championship Killie and a league goal against Livi.

I don’t think there’s any striker banging at the door to replace him, in fairness. The pool of McBurnie/Burke/Paterson/Shankland/Griffiths etc is uninspiring at best.

I looked up Shankland's stats in Belgium to see if he might do a Jack Hendry, but it isn't looking too great so far. His team are rock bottom (one point from 9 games!) He's only played in four of them, two as a sub, and hasn't scored. He was hooked after nine minutes in their last game because they had a defender sent off already.

Regarding Nisbet, Ross said at the weekend that he hasn't been training recently and they've been trying to manage him through games because he doesn't have many other options with Doidge out long-term.

He happily called up Jon McLaughlin when he played for Sunderland in the exact same league.

or Craig Gordon last season while Hearts were in the Championship. Gordon missed their game vs Brora (LOL) because of the first batch of WCQ in March.

Teams can call off league games if they have multiple players away with national teams. That often happens in EFL League One, e.g. Sheff Wed v Sunderland was supposed to be on 4 September but was postponed because of call-ups.

  10. UEFA have achieved the impossible: getting Pat Bonner to watch a game that doesn't involve Celtic.

"When you use wing backs, you need to play out from the back and have a good share of possession,” said the technical panel member Packie Bonner, the former Ireland goalkeeper. “When England started to give away possession they started to lose control of the game."

I actually think if we beat Israel we could probably get away with drawing one of the two away games against the bottom teams - don't think Israel will win their last three.

The first round of the playoffs is seeded (6 best runner-ups get to play at home), so it is important to win those games and to get something against Denmark.

Not saying we have uniquely deranged fans but you just know there's some Hibs fans raging that Boyle isn't injured as it doesn't give them a chance to moan about not signing enough players

Better not tell them that Ron's spent all the backup striker money on two big TVs.

With Liverpool and Man City refusing players permission to go on international duty to red list countries as they'll need to quarantine upon return what's the situation for the u21s coming back from Turkey? It's still on the red list as far as I can see but I'm assuming there's some sort of exemption since St Johnstone got there and back no problem.

Sky said a couple of days ago that the Turkish embassy expects they will get moved down to amber this weekend.
