Team for Saturday. Not a 6-2 bench split. I think Toony reckons we have the pace in the backs to win late on. Having Steyn and Kinghorn back is a boost and I can see Jamie Ritchie is back in favour...

Was it ever confirmed if Matt Fagerson was injured? Would be very surprised for him to have been dropped but that seems to be the rumours online.

I’m disappointed England dropped Freddie Steward, Russell would really have got some joy with kicks in behind him. Now to spend all afternoon praying Z Fagerson can last 80….

A bit pointless appealing this as it was a red.

"Rangers have launched a bid to free Jose Cifuentes for Sunday’s Viaplay Cup Final by appealing the midfielder’s red card against Dundee"

Given there’s no way that’s an obvious error so has no chance of being overturned (even if you debate yellow/red), there will be an extra game added to his ban for a frivolous appeal?

However the truth is we as a club aren't equipped to take on European exertions and then follow that up with domestic fixtures. It's clearly taken its toll on some of the players.

I don’t think this is necessarily true - we have a large (and imo very good) squad, we just have barely utilised it.

You’re right in the toll playing Thursday/Sunday every week is having on some players - I just don’t think it would be if the squad was being utilised more effectively.

I thought the three centre-backs were all very good, with Gartenmann the stand-out. Just a shame he blotted his copybook a bit at the penalty incident, because otherwise it was close to a perfect defensive performance from him.

Was going to post the same. Gartenmann just never looks like he’ll get beaten 1v1, he’s a proper defender. If we can somehow get him signed up for next season then that would be great business and should be one of the current priorities.

Jenssen was excellent and that’s one of the best games I’ve seen Rubezic have for us.

On searching/pat downs, I think it’s pretty pointless if you don’t search everyone going through the gate.

I usually go to games with my old man, and I can’t remember the exact ground (might’ve been Firhill) but my dad walked past the steward with no more than a wee nod. Steward steps in front of me and says “quick search pal” and pats me down.

Seemed a bit odd when we’re clearly together

At the league cup semi a few weeks ago, at the first entrance we walked by the young team were getting thorough airport style pat downs from the stewards there. We went through the next gate along (the adjacent block) and they weren’t searching anybody at all.

Seemed a bit bizarre when you can literally stroll to the next section inside with no checks.

The brutal truth is we as a club aren't equipped to do so. We haven't got the squad nor the finances.

Questions need to asked of Robson as to why we have barely seen (or in some instances not at all) Dadia, Williams, Vinnie, MacDonald, Sokler, Gueye, Marshall and Milne. Especially given he's frequently found excusing his players due to tiredness. Hopefully he finally addresses his tactics/choice of formation after yesterday and changes it going forward. When we play the ball on the deck as shown against Motherwell away we are a decent side.

I largely agree but think your second point somewhat contradicts the first. We don’t have the squad to compete on teo fronts if we only play the same 14 players game after game while Robson complains that all our players are tired because they all played three days before. If we actually utilised more of the players we have available then our Sunday post-Europe performances might have been less lethargic.

I’m pretty worried Miovski will fizzle out post-Christmas (if he’s still here) due to the way he’s basically had to carry the team every game so far (not to mention playing internationally as well).

A few of my mates went over. Had a great time. Lovely city, no hassle.

As mentioned above, there was bussing in early to the stadium, but most of my mates avoided that quite easily and just got themselves to the ground at a leisurely pace.

    Glad to hear.

Annoyingly I’m already away during the Frankfurt trip so debating between Greece and Helsinki in late-November. How many away tickets did Hearts get?

Agreed, I'd just like to see our manager use players in their appropriate positions. There's not a doubt in my mind that we would have beaten Hacken had we played Devlin at RWB, and an actual centre back at centre back...be that MacDonald, Milne, or Williams. All three of their goals came from stretching the right side of our defence.

Having Sadiq on the RW won them the tie, it meant Devlin was fully preoccupied by him with Morris’s lack of defensive awareness/tracking back creating space and opportunities for their other players. Even then, we still had the chances to win the game.

Just read Robson’s comments that Gartenmann can play and has played RB and RCB.

Month or two ago posting about what we'd like to see for the transfer window, I posted I'd like essentially two teams, i.e. two players for every position, and then if possible to flesh out a 30ish man squad with senior backups and laddies. While I'm not going to call people out (mainly because I can't be arsed looking), I certainly had some comments of the "Stop playing FM" ilk. Currently I make it:

    GK:

    Roos, Doohan, Ritchie

    CB:

MacDonald, Jensen, Rubezic, Gartenmann, MacKenzie, Williams, Milne.

    RWB:

Devlin, Morris (f**k knows why he keeps getting played), Dadia (does he exist)

    LWB:

McGarry, Hayes, Duncan (no idea why he keeps getting played here)

    CM/AM:

Shinnie, Clarkson, McGrath, Polvara, Barron, Besuijen, Marshall

    CF:

    Miovski, Duk, Sokler, Gueye, Bavidge

...Which is 28 players, and at least one senior backup for every position. Given we all feel that we're a bit light in midfield, having a Ramadani replacement, and another backup would feel more comfortable.

CM aside, that’s about as strong/stacked as we could have hoped for a few weeks ago. Given Devlin can cover CB and MacKenzie LWB (at a push), we certainly have plenty of defensive options come the inevitable injuries and Rubezic suspensions (I can’t recall if Dadia can also cover CB?).

Hopefully now we can see a bit of consistency in terms of players being selected in their actual positions (Devlin).

Miovski makes it 2-2 with that sitter & I think they crumble & we go through.

    All “if” and irrelevant now

Agreed, Miovski and Duk had enough chances between them to score three or four, we could easily have won that against a very good team so I’m not too concerned with the end result

I’m not against the back three like quite a few on here seem to be, more concerned that we seem to have no tactical flexibility in how we approach games or options to change things up during games.

Was it ever confirmed why McDonald was dropped to the bench?

Robinson seems like the sensible appointment, but there's a part of me that thinks he'd struggle at a team with relatively high expectations. It was the reason I didn't want him at Hearts when the job was going. I think he takes a wee while to get teams working how he wants and not sure fans of Hibs will stick with it.

Montgomery looks a good manager but it's so hard to judge coming from that level.

Think this is true, there’s also the factor that I don’t think his style of football would be as effective for bigger clubs who will dominate games more against opponents who will sit in more against Hibs than the likes of St Mirren.

He’s the standout domestic option and he’d 100% take it, but hopefully they go for Lennon again.

    Aye?

    What “decisions” are they?

There’s the debate on whether Miovski double kicked it or just kicked it in to the ground.
I’ve seen a super slo-mo umpteen times & can’t make up my mind.

    Not “clear & obvious”

    Decisions?

    What others?…………….

There’s the clear and obvious penalty Beaton or VAR should have awarded Aberdeen following Miovski’s goal in the 100th+ minute. The other ‘clear’ VAR decisions missed appear to be awarding offside against a player who was clearly offside, and not sending Miovski off because weegies can’t be trusted to behave themselves.

The 1970’s Brazil team were lucky to even get a point given the clear additional penalty missed by the officials.

Ground score high due to high possession adjusted def duel win % + high possession adjusted interceptions + low amount of fouls conceded.

    Is £750k an overpay? Probably.

Are you finding a 24yo LCB who you know is good enough for the level, who fits your system perfectly, who slots into the team perfectly, and who can only improve, for less than that? Probably not.

Left footed ball playing CBs are incredibly in demand. The idea theres experienced ones in their 20s floating about for less than half a million is a bit fantastical. If you want to progress as a club you'll have to get comfortable paying large fees when its necessary instead of accepting lesser players.

It’s a lot of money but would tend to agree that we’re not going to find a proven young player who we know fits and can slot into our system well without spending a similar fee anyway. Given we already have one CB who is new to the league and possibly a new LWB too, it might be more prudent to bite the bullet given how late in the day it is now getting.

I have an inking the club may sell Duk this window. If a decent offer comes in then he'll be away. Duk has been relatively poor of late and I think he's holding back due to a potential move.

Don’t think this is true and/or fair tbh. I think Duk is lacking a bit of full match sharpness due to his late return following international duty and is still lacking the half yard he had from October onwards last season. I know some might point to Miovski coming back at a similar time, but he’s not just off the back of his first season in professional football (rather than playing for a B team).

Mowbray there now isn’t he? Makes sense. Don’t think he’s ready for the EPL but definitely a player who could do well in the championship

Football snobbery perhaps but would much prefer to sell him to a good league abroad when we eventually do. Think he’s got the perfect blend of athleticism and technique to do well somewhere like the bundesliga.

Just on VAR generally, in Scotland I believe they can only use tech to definitively determine onside/offside.

But everything else is still down to a human being to use their knowledge, experience and judgment to decide whether the on field officials could benefit from a view that they didn't have.

I don't think anyone is saying the ball WASN'T provably NOT over the line, nor that it WAS provably over the line.

So, like a slight shirt tug which sends a 12 stone man to the ground leading to the ref having a look at an angle he didn't have and making a decision, should the VAR official not have just asked the ref to have a look and make his own decision?

A shirt tug is a subjective decision, the ball being over the line is a factual yes/no.

Was the ball 100% without doubt over the line as proven by the footage? If not (as here), then stick with the onfield decision. It’s pretty straightforward and the same would have applied had the ref awarded the goal.
