  1. Notwithstanding everything Antlion said why would you pick Aethelstan as year zero?
Kenneth MacAlpin was King of Scots almost 100 years before England was a kingdom.
I'm annoyed at you now as I occasionally have to put aside my rabid republicanism to protest that "she's our queen too !!"
Pedantry is more important than principle.

Just go with whatever you feel comfortable with Sire, but I think you get the general drift. The whole picture is interesting whether visiting Scone, Westminster, Melrose or Windsor and learning more about the monarchical line of passage and events right across these lands.
  2. I tend to feel that the monarchy pretty much stopped chronicling the zeitgeist on Edward VII’s death. He was the last one to give a name to an era: when you hear “Edwardian”, you think posh folk, big hats, and grand country houses with shooting parties and servants. The current monarchy seems pretty much caught in that long-gone age, albeit an antiquated holdout. The Edwardian period was the last one where the monarch set the tone of British society - or at least the top of it. Since then, we’ve become far more diverse, less beholden to the upper classes as our celebrities de jour, and basically completely cut off from the aristocracy (which pretty much fell into abeyance as societal leaders when their “big houses” started breaking up).
Today, we tend to think of eras as linked to political figures who direct our lives - the Thatcher era; the Blair era. No one genuinely thinks of any of us as Elizabethans (and we think of the 20s and 30s as the Jazz Age and the pre-war years rather than Georgian). My only guess as to why, is that, again, the current Elizabeth, George V, and George VI (I had to look them up to see who the kings even were after Edward VII) just don’t and didn’t dominate or direct society.
The Tony Robinson doc is on YouTube btw:

    That’s great, Cheers[emoji106]
  3. It’s not really a line - more a massively tangled collection of lines. The British monarchical line of descent has become so convoluted thanks to dynastic dead ends and political and religious shifts (and resultant bars on direct heirs) that the Saxe-Coburg-Gothas are far from a direct line from the medieval warlords. Only, as far as I can tell from hasty googling, the Japanese have maintained a direct line, and for even longer. Suggesting that Liz Windsor is a direct descendant of, say, Elizabeth I, is just wrong - more like an extremely distant great-great x1000 twentieth cousin sixty times removed. As far as magic-blood, direct-line monarchies go, Britain has pretty much made it up as it went along, so that we can’t really boast much.
Didn’t Tony Robinson do a documentary about who really should be king or queen if it the rules of succession hadn’t been trampled on so often?

As I said, it’s an interesting timeline that chronicles the modern history of this country that we live in (the notion of a direct blood line, not so much). The Tony Robinson documentary looks a worthwhile search though!
  4. https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/sports/liverpool-chairman-demands-apology-french-ministers-comments-2022-05-31/
Liverpool Chairman Tom Werner has demanded an apology from the French sports minister after she said fans with fake tickets and the club's handling of their supporters were responsible for the trouble that marred Saturday's Champions League final.
Well, what a surprise. Apology demanded. Magnificent stuff Amelie. Great work. [emoji23]

Some of the footage taken outside the ground, genuine, well behaved fans ‘held up and penned in’ prodded with batons and pepper sprayed in the face is just awful though. An apology is the least they should expect.
It appears the Police on duty panicked after so many ticketless ‘fans’ breached the security fences at both ends of the ground. It’s hardly an excuse though to then steam into the fans, patiently queuing outside in good time before kick off just as they were told to do.
Imagine spending hundreds of pounds on a ticket, travel and accommodation (feeling so excited that you were lucky enough to be going to the final to see your team), then to be treated like that and miss the game completely, which happened to hundreds of fans.
I think I’d still be spitting feathers now!
  5. That‘s a US-Pint. A proper [emoji636] Imperial pint is 568ml.

If you ask for una caña in Spain, you’ll be served a small beer, less than half a pint, that’s still nice and cold when you finish it, perfect!
If you do want a pint however, has anyone EVER struggled to get a ‘large beer’ whether in Spain, France or Germany because of our differing measures?! I doubt it. [emoji102]
  6. Was out for walk and spotted this bird grazing on an empty sports field. Was taken at max magnification on phone from around 75 minutes. My brother reckons an Oyster Catcher. I am inclined to agree. Any other ideas? Was very white wings and undercarriage when it flew away.
    Thank you.

Can’t see it’s striking red/yellow eye and bill (also with a short yellow tip) in that shot, but it’s definitely an Oystercatcher.[emoji106]
  7. Disappointing performance at Windsor last night from the National side losing 0-1 against Greece. A few players out but increasingly concerned that Ian Baraclough isn’t taking this side anywhere. 5 wins in 23 games, including 8 defeats and two draws from his 10 matches in Nations League competition. Young talent coming through in Conor Bradley, Shea Charles and Paddy Lane, perhaps the only positives. Home and away games with Cyprus and an away trip to Kosovo over the next week or so don’t look very promising at the moment.

  8. Never been a Royalist\Monarchist by any stretch, it’s always felt a little strange that a group of people could be held in such ‘high esteem’ by so many, with an exalted status achieved by nothing more than accident of birth. The fascination with the Royals, through the media and the general public is baffling sometimes, it’s easy to see how visitors to this country also find the whole melodrama just bizarre if not oddly intriguing.
That said, I do have an historical interest in a 1100 year old line of succession, and it’s impact on the modern history of these islands. Their influence on the political, social and economic development of this tiny country on the World Map has been immense over that timeline.
Their longevity is unique but becoming increasingly outdated for many these days however. So much has changed across the Commonwealth over the last 70 years. The Royal Family’s link to our colonial past doesn’t sit comfortably or have any relevance today.
Once the Queen passes on, perhaps it is time for a rethink with regards to the role of the Monarchy and certainly without the funds and support of the public purse. Surely they’ve got enough stashed away now, to pay for the next few generations.
With regards to events this weekend, hope all those that wish to celebrate genuinely have a good time. Whether its the Olympics, The Queen’s Jubilee or even the Eurovision Song Contest[emoji846], anything that brings groups of people together (families, friends, neighbours & complete strangers) can only be a good thing. There’s enough shite going on in the world at the moment, if it means a weekend of the pubs being full, people organising street parties or enjoying a picnic in the park together, I’m all for it.

  9. I did say "there may be others"...

She also owns an unrivalled collection of Swans, Dolphins, Whales and Sturgeons.
She doesn’t own Black Swans though, not indigenous to the U.K., they come from Down Under introduced to the U.K. in the late 18th Century. Although still part of the Commonwealth for the time being, she probably doesn’t want to do anything more to piss the Australians off at moment by claiming them as her own. Probably best not given them another reason to remove her as Head of State. It really would be the last straw.
  10. 51 minutes ago, Brummie Clyde said:

Nearly all clubs have loan players they want to keep when they come up. We ended up buying Mings and El Ghazi on permanent deals and would have signed Tammy Abraham, but he wanted to go elsewhere.

Does feel like you spend a load just to keep still. Bleeding fortune to improve your side.

Aye, the main five Forest loan signings have made 185 appearnces (Ave 37) between them this season. They've certainly had their value for money out of them, but the bill is already in the post now if they want to keep them all or find suitable replacements.

  11. Think they will do better than Norwich as they'll spend some money.
Norwich come up and immediately sell all their best players.

They’ll certainly get hustled for inflated fees to keep the loan players who have helped them win promotion. With all that filthy lucre at their disposal, the selling clubs/agents will be all over them like a cheap suit. Welcome to the Barclays Premier League.
  12. Is it f**k.
You've been caught out by the Nationalist propaganda, I'm guessing you read this in the National?
It's never been a Rangers song, it's a Northern Ireland fan favourite and England fans like to sing it, our squad full of English players sung it once on video during title celebrations and someone edited the audio to include sectarian lines.
I can see why The National calling it a Rangers song whilst talking about The Queens jubilee would rile up some people but it's extremely transparent.

Recall first hearing ‘Sweet Caroline’ being sang at a Northern Ireland game Vs Poland, in a WCQ at Windsor Park 2004.
  13. And that's before you even look at the Burnley takeover which has taken them from having cash in the bank to being saddled with loads of debt.

And a number of long standing shareholders (against the deal) worriedly taking their money out of the club as soon as it was signed off. The genuine Burnley supporters must be absolutely aghast at what has happened to their club since the ALK Capital takeover less than 18 months ago.
