  1. Hogg, Graham, Harris, Redpath VD Merwe, Hastings, Price; Schoeman, Turner, Fagerson, Gray (RITCHIE?!?!?!?!?!), Gilchrist, Ritchie, Watson, Fagerson.

FH and second row aside can't complain too much, bench looking pretty good as well. Not sure on tuipulotu over Bennett at 23 but nitpicking a bit there

  2. Kinghorn debate is pretty moot for yesterday with only the Scotland based players available, but regardless of where he's playing for Edinburgh for me he should be in every squad primarily as a back three player and emergency 10.

What has Dalziel been doing for the past 3 years? Lineout has been pretty pathetic for almost all that time. As much as I enjoy criticizing Townsend for giving up on "the fastest rugby in the world (TM)" and turning us into an arm wrestling team just as the rest of tier one moved on from that, hard to get an attack going when what should be your best platform just doesn't work.

  3. Strong pack, slightly iffy backline. Was hoping Cummings would get an opportunity to find some form at Scotland level again but still pretty strong. Very funny that Young has been brought straight in over one of the bag carriers.

Re @Detournement's point on needing a long term Hogg replacement, how are Forbes and McKay (appreciate there's a few years to go for him to be eligible) going at Glasgow? I've not been able to watch more than a couple of pro club games in full this year

The only non-annoying Scottish rugby internet guys, even if their opinions on the podcast are much more bland than they come across on twitter.

It's hard to see him stepping down as it would be admitting he fucked up and he's too arrogant for that. There's no other obvious candidates for the job so it would be easy enough for the SRU to keep him on.

On the plus side the pack looks strong and Hastings at 10 isn't the end of the world.

aye, he's going nowhere till the WC, and it feels like everyone knows we are marking time until then. Tbh, I wouldn't want him chucked at this point anyway as doubt anyone could come in and do better with this little notice.

I am glad Hastings is back, though expect Kinghorn to start. And other than guys who look like they're just to fill the squad for the Australia game the pack does look very good.

  6. The International window stuff makes it more complicated but as usual some wild choices. Hutchinson finally gets a call up on the back of a superb season, gets two games out of position and is out the squad next chance Toony gets for Sione and Stafford. Bradbury going very well down at Bristol, let's get Nick Haining in there! I see that Russell has to "find form" to be included, which makes perfect sense when 0 starts Thompson is included as a 10 instead.

I've already pretty much written off anything other than humiliation for next year but it's insane to me that there are still people happy with Townsend. By the time of the World Cup he'll have spent 6 years, with a superb group of players, chasing his own tail for the output of a couple of away wins in empty stadiums and (almost certainly) consecutive group stage exits.

I'll get pelters for this from the type of folk who used to talk about "HOW MANY SCOTLAND PLAYERS WOULD GET IN A LIONS SQUAD?!?!?!" before it turned out the answer was absolutely loads, but I genuinely think if we had a better head coach we'd have won a 6 Nations in 20 or 21 and be aiming for a semi at the WC

I am not currently posting on non-football subjects but should this change I will do so if appropriate, thank you. See ya on the turnbuckle ya candy-ass!

Surely the biggest minter here is - hibs won the game, Goodwin made an arse of himself, Goodwin gets an 8 game ban, porteous stars for Scotland.

Hibs fans then claim ‘wee guy energy’ whilst also going ‘…but but miovski!’

Nah to get very upset about someone "diving" one game and the next having to pretend to be blind is an awful minter I'm afraid. While I'm not saying all Dons have performed that volte face, I'm afraid the entire region gets the collective minter. For me, well-timed hypocrisy is always very funny for being so small time, as someone who thinks pantomime shit is part of the game I don't really care about the individual instances. You're also putting far too much thought into a meme I made in about 30 seconds

I think you are putting your own definition on "cancel culture".  The accepted definition for cancel culture does not require that people suffer significant or disproportionate consequences.  The entire cancel culture is dependant on mob mentality which is what you were promoting and is already a well observed behaviour on P & B, although usually relating to a poster rather than their posts.

Do you usually confuse "accepted definition" for "thing I made up on the spot to justify my incredibly lame joke I couldn't resist making due to being an awful bore"?

  9. We're likely going to see some mental stuff in the next couple of weeks - random punters being monstered in the national press for off colour jokes on social media, losing their jobs etc. Hopefully will put in perspective next time an art gallery stops stocking an artist's postcards or a comedian has a gig cancelled for flashing an audience member but I'm not holding me breath!

  10. Just like the other big fantasy show at the moment I think it's fine. The CGI looks great, as someone who likes a bit of Tolkein world building it's cool to see the dwarf and elf kingdoms depicted, it looks really really lovely and there's some cool attention to detail. It's very clunky though, and while House of the Dragon has learned from how annoying the apparent teleportation travelling of GoT was, the same problem is here (most notably in the scene shared above). The plot directions all seem pretty interesting thus far and while I don't think the characters are particularly interesting yet it's very early days, so I'm hopeful.

I think culture warriors and massive Tolkein heads were pretty primed to hate it, and others have had their expectations raised a lot by the budget, but ultimately this is big budget tv these days. Chucking a bunch of money to make a new Star Wars, LotR or other IP show just gets us this very pretty middle of the road stuff. Even GoT only really reached prestige TV levels of quality for a couple of seasons, the fumbling of the ending had people way overestimating some of the quality of the early show.

  11. Think it's fine, enjoy chucking it on on a Monday evening. Considine is great, interiors are nice, some decent dialogue and most of the characters have a bit to be interested in. They're already botching set pieces though and the dragons seem to have taken up so much of the VFX budget that any wide CGI shot looks like it was rendered on a PS3.

Hopeful it'll continue to be an entertaining Monday night show but don't think anyone will be talking about it once it finishes. Regardless, acting like a Marvel fanboy about a three episode-old dragon show is very funny

  12. One of the most hairbrained takes I've ever seen was someone saying Wilfred Zaha should be embarrassed by his career, should have done much better etc. Yeah he should have been playing in European competitions but he's a hero at the club he grew up at, is a top player in a great league, and has made a fortune while playing international football.

Pretty much everyone can eat less but decent quality meat.

Tinned sardines are an excellent, cheap and healthy source of protein for pasta meals. Tinned mackerel (especially in tomato sauce) makes a cheap and easy protein for a fish curry.

Cheap vegetable sources of protein are chickpeas and most tinned/dried beans and peas. Swap out half of the meat content of a meal with a can of those instead (chickpeas for curry, tagine etc.; kidney beans for chilli; white beans for pasta). Dried lentils are also a good option for soup/daal.

A good mix of different frozen veg (peas are 60p a kilo - mix and match from there) is also well worth having.

Aye we try to just buy 2 or 3 pieces of meat a week: something for Sunday dinner, something for breakfast at the weekend and maybe something for a Saturday night if we're in/having pals round for dinner. Usually get to our local butcher which isn't much dearer than even Lidl or Aldi in our experience and there's a better chance it's decently sourced. About £15 at the butcher last weekend and that got us two nights of spaghetti bolognese, roast chicken on Sunday and leftovers for a salad on Monday, and some bacon for Sunday morning. Need to get more onto tinned fish, have been tempted to get in on that Fishbox subscription as at least it's a controlled cost and again you know it's better sourced.

Weeknight dinners are generally chickpea curries, white or butter bean stews, roast veggies with feta etc. Been meaning to try some saitan or tempeh as well but I think that's a bit too dear for what it is when beans are already there and are class. Getting in some peas, edemame, broad beans etc, even as a side, is a good and very easy to make tasty way of getting in veggie protein as well.
