The difficulties arranging time with pals etc definitely gets harder as you pass 30, that's true for most I'd suggest. I certainly experienced that when the guys all got married and had kids etc.

You'll find most people have similar feelings towards how it used to be etc but still tend to enjoy meeting up albeit less frequently. Life just gets in the way.

Maybe try a squash league or join something like a cycling or whisky club locally. Not too high pressure and can naturally have some interaction with decent folk.

Firstly thanks to everyone who replied. Sorry for not responding sooner.

Things I like most - snooker, pool, table tennis, running, poker. Varied I know RE to get involved. I’ll see what I can find. Thanks for the suggestions.

There are always clubs, interest groups and such. Yes, many cater to an older crowd, but not all. Heck, even if you end up in a sea of pensioners at one, I’ll bet you can get a nice chat out of it. The other spot is a live music venue, where there will be lot of people, and some will be far enough away to converse with. A final option is adult education classes, many universities offer outreach courses (not for credit) in subjects of interest like languages and skills.

Given the current situation, maybe I can improve my Ukrainian. Thanks for the tip.

The gym is a good shout, although it can be a certain type of person and they often live for working out. Friend of mine joined a running / military fitness club, met a load of new people, ends up doing social nights with them. If pool something you are into more than just a general thing to do, there's loads of pool / snooker clubs in Scotland, always found them to be actually fairly friendly places.

Friendship is weird when you get older, I see the lads I go to football with more than any of my other mates. I don't really have any mates that live that close to me, but we're on WhatsApp practically every day just talking shite. I drink in my local semi regularly, always end up meeting old boys that have a story to tell and play pool with them, I like it as it doesn't need to go any further than a drink and pool, you'll see them again in the pub and i'm fine with that.

I have Marfan syndrome, so going to the gym will have zero affect on me physically. Although the mental affect will be good, certainly. Thanks again.

I used to live just going to the boozer on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon and listening  to all the old boys stories. They were abysmally out of touch with their sayings etc but some of the times it was just great to listen to how they grew up.

If you enjoy pool, just hang around a pool hall playing and people will start to talk to you, take you on. There is obviously outliers but 99% of pool halls I've been to are decent.

Failing that, come to Dundee or we will get a few boys from here out for a pint somewhere.

Only been to Dundee a couple of times but enjoyed it. I’ll give you a message when I’m next in and have time for a beer. :)

  2. Anyone got any ideas of how to meet new people? It’s a strange thing to ask but really, how do you make new contacts without the cascade of the internet?

I turned 30 a few weeks ago. I tried to arrange pool with my closest mates but it never happened. I spent my 30th sitting at the bar, drinking and snorting my pan in. I literally had nothing else to do/no one wanted to be with me. Loneliness is fucking brutal.

  3. I’ve noticed that’s far too long so TL;DR version: Watching normally telly (stone deed by about 2066).

I was watching an old episode of The Sweeney there, and it got me googling a couple of the cast to see what else they were in (and if there still alive or not, totally unrelated to next years Dead Pool list, honest) and one search led me to a Facebook group about remembering 70’s actors, which got me thinking. Now I was only born in the early 90’s but growing up in a house obsessed with 70’s British telly shows I remember my dad telling me how important watching normal TV was with the family.

I can’t remember the last time I watching something on the TV that wasn’t on demand/streamed on a dater date. So, based on nothing at all, I will predict “normal telly” will be a thing of the past by the time I’m in my 70’s.  What “normal thing” will be no longer when you’re looking back on it all?

  4. As someone who works with primary school children, when I saw the caterpillar, my head was in my hands.

I actually thought the treasure chest idea was quite good, but it was terribly designed and less said about the app the better.

    Bump

I don't normally listen to their show but I was recommended the 2 Johnnies Podcast recent 'GAA Catfish' episodes. Sure enough it is an absolutely bonkers and really quite sinister story.

Have any P+B members ever been Cat-fished or been a catfish themselves?

Just listened to that Catfish story.

    Fucking hell

I quite enjoyed mastering all the Covid rules in different countries to find ways of sneaking around them to go on holiday between hardcore lockdowns. And not having to bother looking presentable going out to the shops thanks to face masks. And getting out of some family visits.

Me and three mates got a weekend in Berlin less than a week before they went full lockdown. We needed negative tests but from private companies and not NHS. We chanced it and upon arrival, German border force just glared at it like “WTF is this?” and just threw it back and waved us through. About 5 hours later I was sat at a bar drinking a pint and smoking a snout whilst back home that would have got you various degrees of charges. It was very surreal.

infact I’m sure you were a great help for that trip, so thanks for that!

I assumed you must be mistaken - but evidently not. She hasn't yet been to the new ground:

"We're excited about getting into Lesser Hampden. I haven't actually been there since I've been at the club and that's just over 2 years now. We will be playing at Lesser this year."

In the context of both debacles, this was also a rather interesting retort:

"Do you feel as a club Queen's Park are prepared if they did infact win promotion to the top flight?".

"I think like everything else we just focus on now - if you had asked me the question this time last year, are you ready and prepared to go into the Championship, then I don't think we were expecting to be in the Championship this time last year. I think we just need to do our business. If we get to the Premier League then we will deal with that, but it's a very big if. We just take it as it comes. If we get there we will deal with it".

Basically laughing through the part of being chucked out the cup. I’m genuinely gobsmacked at that. What a boot in the balls for the fans*

    *Haha

  8. Got a week off in February and got cheap flights to Kaunas. Never been to Lithuania before, so has anyone got any ideas of where to visit? Thinking a couple of days there and then head over to Vilnius for a couple of days before heading back to Kaunas to fly home.

Really good documentary earlier on BBC2, guy called OIly Lambert spent a few weeks filming with some of the volunteer army on the front lines.

Well worth a watch, it will be on iPlayer - Ukraine: The Peoples Fight

Whenever I see people on Twitter say “aw why aren’t you on the front line” to Ukrainian men in the uk currently for whatever reason (mostly when Scotland played Ukraine twice) - it’s as if people (let’s be honest, your brexit wankers) think it’s just a case of dropping everything and overnight becoming an effective solider. And as if fat Barry from Wigan would drop everything and take arms if England was invaded.

I love Scotland and I’m a patriot of Scotland but putting me on a battlefield is fucking pointless. I’d be a hindrance to any experienced solider and couldn’t shoot in a straight line.

  11. On a personal level, great. I got promoted at work, something I’ve worked for since 2015. Otherwise, I’ve seen two friends have been killed and I’ve seen many friends suffer more than anyone deserves to through war. It breaks my heart that this is happening. 2023 will bring Ukraine’s victory, it’s my only wish.

I hope everyone has a good year and their wishes come true. ❤️
