Watching on mute, but I was very confused about why the ref was asked to go and check that Dutch penalty. Dumfries definitely went down easily but it looked a pretty blatant foul, didn't see much scope for overturning it.

I thought that the penalty award might have been offside, and he was advised to check the earlier incident, for which he then awarded a penalty.

Yeah the Penguin Classics version. I've got one of those ornate looking hardback versions of Crime and Punishment... a wee goal of mine is to only start buying those sort of hardbacks/bound books. It's been a while since I've been to the Glasgow Waterstones off of Buchanan street, but they basically had a whole floor of those hard-bound classics.

Many years ago I was doing a post-graduate qualification and went to the college office to discuss payment of the fees in installments. Office was staffed by two middle-aged ladies. I opened the conversation by telling them that I found myself in a Raskolnikov situation, by which I meant that I was a penniless student rather than that I was a delusional axe-murderer. Fortunately, neither had read the book and so were baffled rather than terrified.

Which part of the above do you think applied there, though?

    • passing the ball to a team-mate;
    • gaining possession of the ball; or
    • clearing the ball (e.g. by kicking or heading it)

If the pass, attempt to gain possession or clearance by the player in control of the ball is inaccurate or unsuccessful, this does not negate the fact that the player ‘deliberately played’ the ball.

  4. Arron Ferster, a 38-year-old TV producer from Manchester, said: “My grandfather survived Auschwitz and in his testimony described babies being thrown and caught on bayonets by the SS, and that always struck me as unfathomable. But to know that a similar level of barbarism has taken place, and in of all places Israel – which was seen as a safe haven if, God forbid, we ever needed to get out of here – that brought home how strong Jew hate is in some places.”

Do people find this stuff credible? If true, it must represent some nadir of evil; if fabricated, it is beyond contemptible.

Barnes is probably the best ref going.  And that definitely wasn’t always the case. Fair play to him for that.

Do video referees in rugby have a higher status than VAR in football? Compare the faffing about with the disallowed Scotland goal to Barnes being told "I'm going to show you the deliberate knock-on." Surely the referees judgement is final?

Aye there clearly is a "good IRA" who fought the British in 1916-1923. That's the one alluded to in "we're all off to Dublin" and "boys of the aul' brigade".  In fact, as far as I can discern, all of Celtic's song book seems to reference that conflict rather than, say, the blowing up of shopping centres.

Oh, there is the "SAM" song which is more about "the troubles", but aye, as nauseating as Celtic fans can be in their romantic exceptionalism, they're not wrong here.

Guardian article explaining why Rangers and Celtic fans would share common ground in disliking a song.

    That's an incredible shift.

Egalitarian, social justice advocate and dedicated trade unionist joins Tories. She's in for a bit of a culture shock.

I am a member of the Scottish National Party, and was a trade union representative with Unite for 14 years. I have a long-held interest in social justice, inequality and issues of discrimination.

The problem with that is that the path was already set before the end of the 2nd world war. Balfour was a bit presumptuous just after the first war.

The Balfour Declaration was 1917, while WWI was in progress. Ironically, I think the Balfour Declaration was primarily antisemitic in its main objective, i.e. if the Jews have a homeland then they won't be here.

It was from the general secretary of the Labour party, which I am never leaving, informing me of changes to my membership card. I now have to carry something with a union flag on it that says “putting country first” on the flip side.

Bit derivative, I think. I suppose most here are familiar with the quote from arch-Tory GK Chesterton: " 'My country, right or wrong', is a thing no patriot would think of saying. It is like saying 'My mother, drunk or sober.' "

The £36 billion hasn't been borrowed yet and never will be. A mix of half-hearted promises, outright lies and distortions. They'll do f**k all new but every pothole, every repair and every patch-up job will be loudly proclaimed as a beneficiary of HS2 being cancelled.

I read the news today, oh boy

Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire

And though the holes were rather small

They had to count them all

Supposedly the reference in the song was lifted from an article in the Daily Mail. All good things come to those who wait.

Yanks must be praying Spieth chips in from everywhere tomorrow. Not tremendous reading for Bob, especially with the putter.

    Rahm - jesus christ

A few years back, our next-door neighbour partnered Rahm in a pro-am. He was totally awe struck by how the guy played and made it sound as though he had played a round of golf with God. Looks as if you have got his status about right.

    It's a tree, who gives a f**k?

    "Tree of the year"

It was the lead story on the regional BBC news.  Vox pops included: devastating, bereft, angry and upset and can't comprehend. I can actually understand those kinds of reactions. However, the leader of the County Council was interviewed and suggested that it would be like the Kennedy assassination, in that everyone would remember where they were when they heard the news. I've forgotten already.

Anyone else finding Wordle a bit easier lately? I used to average maybe 4/5 guesses, but it's overwhelmingly 3 these days.

I'm not sure if the brain gets better organised about solving these, or they're just using words that are more common. Getting a lot of "that was a lucky guess!" from the WordleBot, which usually claims it would've tried something nonsensical that uses an already ruled-out letter. GIRUY, robot.

I think there can often be a strong element of luck in arriving at the solution. It took me three guesses to get the last four letters in the correct sequence; after that I could have had a choice of eleven different starting letters. Fortunately, my first guess was . . . er, correct.
