Glory glory Ally-lujah! A one-two punch from Ally Roy sees Airdrie secure victory in a pleasantly eventful pre-season Monklands Derby.
Wee thing i'm trying; a match report from Tuesday.
Anyway; most, if not all, of the squad are getting run outs, getting minutes on the pitch, building their fitness and maybe even starting to develop relationships, but as many have pointed out, preseason always has been and always will be an unreliable measure for predicting the season ahead. It will be interesting to see, as mentioned by G_H and ++Ammo - Airdrie++, how quickly we settle on an 11. The cup games are likely to also be matches in which we try things, i would think.
The quicker we can settle on a side, the better. That being said, there are teams in the top flight that have still not settled on their best team. Players, especially new signings, take time to bed in, time that can vary player to player.
We cannae be panicking if we don't get off to a flier, even in a shortened season. We especially cannae panic if we don't have a settled and consistent starting 11 by matchday 6. Very few teams will. Remember that we only played 28 games last season, due to the curtailment.

Enjoyed the read also ! Keep up the good work [emoji815]️
2. In my opinion Roy could easily finish the season with 15 plus goals. The main difference this year is that he will undoubtedly get better service into the box. Remember we started lest season with him out on the wing which didn't help. I'm sure people will agree also that he is a 'confidence' player and sometimes his head goes down to easily if things are not going well. He will also realise that this year is a make or break season for him in many ways. I'm confident that we'll see the best of him however.

Actually think he might do better in the behind closed doors games . I was always quick to get on his back as I’m aware many fans did at times last season. Hopefully a run in the team and a few goals will do him good for the season.
3. Having now had a chance to work out who was who, I had concerns over last night’s performance. If we play like that in the league there is no chance of being anywhere near promotion. Failure to dominate a team are as low as Albion Rovers in midfield does not bode well. I thought Robert was poor and certainly not the wonder kid we were told we had signed. On the positive side having now seen the three goals up close they were cracking goals.

I know it is early season but I am not confident.

As far as the goals we conceded I think if we had Crighton and Fordyce at the back we would’ve been able to prevent them .

Trying not to be pessimistic but As I said last week If someone offered me 4th place right now I’d take it and run. I think the defence will take care of itself. As much as the core of the team is the same we had five new players in the starting 11. Just need to give everyone time to gel , get match sharp and let Murray find out about what the best system and 11 is. Especially the Sabatini and Robert who haven’t played in Scotland before.

We’ve got 2 preseason games left followed by 2 betfred cup games which in my opinion should be treated as friendlies. So we have over 3 weeks training before the real stuff starts.

4. I quite liked Thomson at the start of last season (he was excellent in the 3-1 win against Clyde) but by the end it would have been difficult to consider him part of our best 11. His return in terms of goals and assists wasn't great at all and it seemed that whenever he found himself in a position to shoot his shot was either very weak or straight at the goalie. Perhaps I'm being too critical as he did show good glimpses and his season was broken up by a lengthy injury but I think it's a big season for him and Roy to try to prove that they earned their second seasons at the club. Hope both of them prove me wrong.

I quite liked the look of Thomson as well had just started his first few games after injury before lockdown after previously getting a few sub appearances. Remember his injury clearly and it looked a bad one so suspect we are yet to really see the best of him. But with o’reilly Robert carrick and Thomson we have plenty of options in the wide areas.

On a side note just saw thistle have signed kouider - Aissa on loan from livi exactly what we need in the squad - guaranteed goals imo.
5. We're more than halfway through the month now with a friendly in a few days, is it safe to assume that this wEsT HaM loan deal is dead?

If the West Ham thing doesn’t pull through will be interesting to see if we pull in any Scottish loans . Had a player from hibs with Murray’s connections there the last two seasons.

Not sure if we are or not allowed to make 5 subs this season ? If so the strength off the bench is even more important this year
6. Spot on, If we are to compete for league we need a couple of goal scorers, plenty cover for keeper's so hopefully same with strikers,

Agree with the striker situation wonder how much we couldn’t afford chucky by. Would’ve been a lot more confident with him in the squad. Having said that have trust in Murray’s and miller’s decision making and maybe the idea is to spread the goals throughout the teams with various attacking mids at our disposal
7. QP can easily self sustain when they get to the Championship even after Haughey disappears. They'll have facilities and a catchment area that most part time and some full time clubs in this country can only dream of. They're one of the better supported tier 3/4 clubs anyway, if anything the amateur status held them back far too long IMO. When was the last time they were even in the second tier, even going back to the days of three leagues as opposed to four? The Southside of Glasgow isn't Dumbarton, Brechin or Cowdenbeath, it's a huge place with a lot of transient people there from outwith the area who the club will appeal to as their success increases.  Dare I say as a Thistle fan they have a chance of overtaking us in the next five years.

9 teams in league 1 and 3 teams in league 2 had higher average attendances than QP last year . Also glasgow has plenty of teams for people to chose to watch apart from the obvious OF. Pollok to name another. Going by the crowds Hamilton st Johnstone get I don’t think it’s a massive deal as they have shown they can sustain a team in the premier league on pretty low crowds.

Anyway have watched the uprising of Queen’s Park from a far it is good to see a lower league team with a bit of hope and optimism around . Having been at a couple of your games when you shared at airdrie I wish you All the best [emoji106]
8. I rated big Nat at Airdrie could shrug off players, play a good pass and was good in the air . The downsides were his lack of any pace at all and often gave fouls away but I think as he’s bigger it may be easier for smaller players to buy fouls off him. Think there’s a lot worse than having big Nat in your team.

9. Given we have a white home and a black away, we would only really need it if we had an away draw to Elgin, Queen's Park, Dunfermline or St Mirren in one of the cups, so yes I would expect it to be worn only a couple of times and probably in games where our home or away would have been fine. Probably better to think of the kit as a piece of merchandise, along with hats, scarves, keychains and mugs and if selling it makes the club extra cash then that's a good thing.

Agreed if it brings in more money to the club then I’m all for it they can have as many kits as they like.

Think Clyde is problematic if we will continue with the black away strips as they have white red and black. Also I’m sure East fife bizarrely also played us at home wearing an all white strip with red on it [emoji23]
10. If the grant rumours have a bit of substance then I can only assume he's for the midfield. We're pretty well covered at the back with macdonald, McCann, Fordyce (IMO) able to cover left back before him in an emergency.
Grants exactly the type of player I've been wanting to sign for a few years, not positionally, but someone who's performed well for a "lower ranked team" (no offence intended) in our own league.
There's got to be a mix of a bit of flair and attack with guys who know the league and have performed well for their respective clubs.

Would really like to see grant coming in would be a statement of intent because I’d imagine he won’t be short of offers . If not I’d imagine McKay and Sabatini will be starting CMs if stokes is more of an attacking mid then another Forward who can add goals should be a priority
11. An option for the back up keeper could be Rohan Ferguson as he was released from Motherwell this summer. Not seen any of him lately but he was highly rated at Airdrie as a youngster and he's relatively local as he hails from Bathgate. Still only 22 as well so would fit the mould of signings we've been making.
Edited to add: Scrap that completely, just watched a few highlights from Linfield games last season and he's not the answer.

Not highly rated by all . Came in at a young age and played every game but ultimately cost us stupid goals and points. You could probably get a better back up
12. With the news that lower league training cannot begin until 24th August at the earliest,  things look to be turning a little sinister,

If training begins and stricter protocols are adhered to,  how will the 'hybrid,' work,  we have 4 part time players out of a squad of 22.  2 x keepers Currie and Hutts,  and 2 x strikers seagal and Carrick also Prunty as coach ?,   How will part time players and coaches be allowed to integrate with the full time bubble so to speak.  Reading the latest guidelines it seems pretty impossible....

Not read the latest guidelines but to be fair our return to training seemed a little premature in comparison to our counterparts any way. I’d imagine we will play little friendlies and with the betfred cup not to start until October a later return to training might not make much difference.

Hope that there’s not more to it
13. Are you genuinely saying a perma skint part time club offered him more money than we were offering on a full time contract?

Not that airdrie have the same finances as Falkirk but Stirling apparently offered Andy Ryan more money part time than we could offer him, so not surprised. No idea where these sides are getting their money from
