Why does nobody in football just follow this simple approach then?

They do! The Europeans draw fouls in the middle of the park, take an age with throw-ins etc,  and forego the adoption of the tried, tested and failed approach of a San Marino style of play to see out a match.

Parking the bus is rarely successful for Scotland, just ask Craig Levein.

If we are 1-0 up on Hungary with 10 minutes to go I’m 100% bringing Ryan Jack on to park the bus.

As yes,  'parking the bus' by sitting as far back as possible and drawing severe pressure for the last ten minutes until everything turns to shit the Scottish way.

The best way to run down the clock is to do it as far as possible from your own goal and penalty area.

You keep reading it about Jack from bitter Aberdeen fans and blinkered Celtic fans.

We got the best years from Jack and then he moved onto the phoenix club, where he suddenly started getting picked for Scotland.

The fact is his best days are behind him and he's en route to Rugby Park to be with Delboy

I don't think taking an injury ravaged Jack to Germany strengthens the squad.

If I thought it did then I just wouldn't say anything about the rat.

Cooper and Dykes out euro 2024 because they injury and Stewart and Armstrong will replace both

Which Armstrong are you talking about? Stuart Armstrong was already in the provisional squad but Ross Stewart wasn't so I'm confused...or are you talking about Daniel Armstrong?

I read people saying that Dykes will be one of the two players from the provisional squad that won't travel but Dykes will need to be replaced with another striker so that would still mean we're looking at Kelly and Union Jack not making it..

I'll be down on Friday night but not expecting much from the game...the way things are going, a successful night will be negotiating it without further injuries to our depleted squad.

I'm likely in a minority of one but I would play my wildcard and take Simon Murray.

In the early days of Europe lots of teams got to the final with mostly all domestic players, when there was a non domestic player you'll find that it was 1 or 2 players who were not from that nation until around the mid 70's and then the trend changes.

Although Steau Bucharest won it in 86 with a team full of Romanians and when they lost the final in 1990 it was still 11 Romanians.

I'm not contesting what you're saying, I agree with it overall but I would add that the Steaua team pulled together most of the best players in the country, like a national team, because of the privileges available to the Romanian Army.

To that ends it was similar to Dynamo Kiev in the Ukrainian S.S.R where it's position in a Communist society could allow it to cherry pick the best player in the country.

Also Steaua lost the 1989 European Cup Final rather than the 1990.

I think this kind of thing is more an issue for the fans and media than for the players.  I'm sure they'd see it as a good achievement, but the historical dimension doesn't really seem to be something players care about as much.  Beating France in Paris was a big deal because the French had an excellent team and the players managed to overcome them, not because we hadn't done it for decades prior.  I really don't think players think about hoodoos and curses and historical records.

I don't think you can underestimate the psychological side of sport.

I agree that the players won't be leafing through the archives to see what has happened in the past; however, the media can plant seeds of past failures and glories to come if they can overcome the hoodoo.

I don't feel anything different about our preparations or squad for this tournament from previous ones that makes me think we're away to see a different outcome than we've seen before.

We'll get one brave performance (defeat against Germany), one stirring performance resulting in a victory or draw and one collapse.

In the above examples, Bulgaria had a world class player in Stoichkov that gave them belief, whilst South Korea had the will of the home crowd, and more importantly, the will of the officials.

We just have what we always have, a few good players, some good pros but ultimately all with the collective Scottish inferiority complex that will hinder our progress.

  7. 1 hour ago, BFTD said:

Oh, absolutely, and you can't fault them for their performance in 1992. It's likely the national team's biggest achievement, especially as the CIS would've qualified by beating us.

However, you look at all the tournaments that Scotland have been to and think, "really, we've never got out of the group stage once, even by accident?"  It starts to look like a mental block, similar to England and penalties. There are probably other countries who have similar limits, like apparently the Mexicans have a thing about never getting past the World Cup quarter-finals (cry me a fucking river).

The Bulgarians hadn't won a match at a World Cup Finals until they beat Greece in their second game at USA 94 World Cup (they had been pumped 3-0 by the Nigerians in their opening game).

They then went all the way to the semi-finals.

You're correct, we just need to reach the second round this time and get that monkey off our back.

I'm going to bore everyone again by pointing out that it isn't the final placing that's the issue, but the fact that we've never progressed once the tournament proper has begun.

Getting to the final 8/16/24 over a series of games spread over 1-2 years was something we were quite good at, and deserved credit for, but we've never managed to do it over a week with the big spotlight on us. It seems indicative of stagefright...or perhaps we've just never been as good as we thought we were.

True, however, would you agree that Germany, Netherlands and the CIS in 92 or Netherlands, English and Swiss with only two qualifying from four provided a far more substantial hurdle than a possible three qualifying from four from 2021's group Czech Republic, England and Croatia (with two matches at Hampden) or this forthcoming group in Gemrany 2024.

I think we're giving this group of players more historical baggage by suggesting that this insurmountable hurdle is similar as it has been in the past*.

As an Aberdeen supporter, I listened in horror as Barry Robson would continually tell the press that the players were tired afrer European games, which I think had a psychological affect on the squad domestically.

I would just like us to go out to Germany with confidence that we're good enough to qualify comfortably from this group and instill some belief in the squad.

*Apart from 1990, as we should've really progressed from that group although I sometimes wonder whether we would've beaten Sweden had we taken care of the Costa Ricans in the first game.

**I would also add that we only ever qualified once for a European Championships containing only eight teams so it was a significant achievement for the Scotland team and one that I don't belief we've bettered before or since. Some might suggest West Germany 1974 but I believe we didn't realise our potential in that tournament and it was within our ability to reach the Top 4.

No we're discussing the squad AND the short list from the initial SFA availability list who didn't actually get picked. Which is what the post you quoted says.

So correct McCrorie and it's Max Johnston who were both in the "long list" but didn't make selection for the 28.

I had no idea there was a list on top of the preliminary list which will be whittled down to a final list.

I'm sure it used to be far simpler back in the days when we qualified for World Cups. A 24 man squad and five or so back ups.

It would be interesting to know who was on the back up list for 1974 to 1990 World Cups, and 1998...

  10. 17 minutes ago, Skyline Drifter said:

😆take the point but in fairness only one of those five (Dykes) was actually a contracted QoS player in our first team for a period. One is a QoS youth product (Hanley) who left us before he played for the first team (went to Crewe, then on to Blackburn). The other three (McCrorie, Clark and Johnston) were all loan players only, though Clark was here for more than a year and a half and Johnston for a full season so we can certainly take some development credit for both). Robby McCrorie was more short term (6 months).

Are we discussing those named in the 28 man squad? If so, then you have the wrong McCrorie and who is Johnston?

We have THREE ex QoS players in the squad. And another two were in the short list that didnt quite make it. Quite remarkable really.

Quite remarkable or a stark example of the resources available to us.

Although, being an Aberdeen supporter, I still wake up with sweat on my brow, screaming and hallucinating of Jackie McNamara smirking at the mere thought of anything related to QoTS.

  12. I see Steve Clarke has said that to reach Round 2 would be the first aim as it's something we've never done previously, which is a sllght massaging of the facts because whilst it's true that we've never qaulified beyond the first round proper in the World Cup or the Euros, we did reach the final 8 in Europe in 1992.

Round 2 would see us match our Euro 1996 performance of last 16.

Personally, I don't think the last 8 is realistic this time around, the last 16 feasible I suppose but we haven't resolved the issues we have at the heart of our defence, and the strike force in the squad must be one of the weakest in the tournament at this level.

Add to the equation that we face the Germans in the first match which might also affect morale if they land a sore one on us.

Consequently, alas, I fear another Round 1 exit.

Aberdeen hold a comfortable 9-4 lead on bottom 6 finishes since the split was introduced, so I'm not sure about that.

Although let's not forget that we were cost-cutting in the early noughties whilst Hearts were going through their financial doping spell so this 9-4 score is a bit skewed isn't it!

Additionally, Hearts weren't even in the league for the same amount of time as Aberdeen since the split began because of two relegations.

I’ve found the squad here: https://aberdeen-fc.com/aberdeen-fc-tennents-sixes/tennents-sixes.html#gsc.tab=0.

Based on which I think the guy in question might be Brian Mitchell? I’m not fully convinced on this, but I’m going by a process of elimination.

    Simmie, Angus, Stark, Leighton, Grant.

    McMaster, Porteous, Miller (J), Mitchell.

I was at this edition of the Tennents Sixes. My memory of the occasion isn’t vivid alas, although I do remember dropping something (possibly a hat) behind the temporary stand never to be seen again.

EDIT - I think the photo might be the 1986 team? McLeish lifted the cup in 1987, I don’t see him in the photo. Strip also looks like the 1986 strip. Stevie Gray was also in the 1986 team, the mystery guy is either Mitchell or Gray (possibly neither!).

The guy bottom right is Stevie Gray.

Brian Mitchell has the girl sitting on his knee.

Stevie Gray died in 2009. I'm not sure of the cause; however, he would occasionally appear in my local back in the 1990s and he got involved in drugs.

I think it was acknowledged that he lost his way when Fergie left.

Take the night off, mate. You’re having a swing at a perfectly reasonable post.

    Take it easy.

The post on isolation is reasonable to an extent; however, this is about your 500th post on how Hearts are so much better than Aberdeen.

Did an Aberdeen girl break your heart or something?

You need to let it go and move on.

The frustrating thing with Gartenmann is how frequently he makes the schoolboy error of letting the ball bounce, it's completely unforgivable at this level. At least once every other game I've seen him let a routine hoof forward bounce before trying to deal with it, and then he inevitably gets bullied by the opposition striker.

Sokler let one bounce in our box on Saturday.

It came to nothing as he pumped it out the park but my heart skipped a beat.

Ally McCoist in a cracking Scotland away strip in Belgium in 1987 on a night we were skelped 4-1 against a Belgian side inspired by Nico Claesen who scored a hat trick.

Paul McStay scored a belter on an otherwise night to forget from a Scottish perspective, neither side made it to the European Championships in West Germany the following year, we actually finished above Belgium, coming third in the group, this was the campaign a late Gary Mackay winning goal in Bulgaria prevented them from qualifying and allowing Ireland to make it to their first major tournament.

Ironically a post that would sit well in amongst that cesspit

Indeed, I was 'tired and emotional' when typing that post, it had been a long day although I did find Duk and Morris work rate infuriating at the game...they both seemed to be successfully avoiding any interaction with the ball.

Although calling Duk a 'shitebag' was dramatic nonsense.

For me, they along with Roos were the only players that disappointed me on Saturday.

Roos for that incident with the cramp and giving his own inexperienced team mate a excruciatingly long wait to take his penalty, when he could've shuffled off to the side and then received treatment and delayed their next taker.

He definitely doesn’t like the physicality of the week to week stuff.

He was great yesterday but my worry is that he’s excellent at the last ditch stuff. He makes good tackles, blocks, puts his body on the line. The stuff that stands out in these games. Problem is I see him making last ditch challenges etc too often against the likes of st Johnstone or hibs at home and you wonder if he’s actually put himself in that position in the first place.

His positioning can be pretty kamikaze at times too.

Russell Anderson eventually carved out a career of being an excellent last ditch blocker and tackler after being caught out positionally.

Gartenmann played a fine game yesterday epitomised by that beautiful take down and cross field pass he made to Hoilett for the third goal.

I think his biggest problems this season have came when partnering with Jensen.

  20. I made the mistake of visiting 'The Hat' and it's a piley on Shayden Morris.

I won't deny that he did nothing apart from one cross but that one effort was more than that shitebag Duk  did on the whole 70 minutes he was on the park

    Well there you go....

I was wrong, I didn't think Thelin was a remote possibility and I'm still slightly curious why he decided to make the move.

I do hope he is now given a proper opportunity to build a squad over two or three seasons before we start judging him.

However, I suppose most fans will back him even without immediate winning runs if we can see that he knows what he's doing, unlike the previous Cormack men.

I think he is destined to play at a higher level, and it doesn't surprise me that Serie A clubs like him, but it is a bit disappointing that we have never really seen Barron in a genuinely good Aberdeen team with proper coaching. Aberdeen, and Scottish clubs in general, don't produce many players like him.

They could both be in Serie B by the time he arrives.

It surprises me because I don't think he's good enough but I would view this interest as more the produce of the Lewis Ferguson effect with more Italian clubs thinking they can unearth a Scottish gem.

I thought similar when Calvin Ramsey went to Liverpool for that ridculously over-inflated price for a lad that hadn't even proved himself at Aberdeen, and seemed to struggle to complete a full game. I put that down to the Andy Robertson effect (see also Nathan Patterson's move to Everton).

It would be a hard gig for Barron in the lower reaches of Serie A.
