  1. Don’t get me wrong, I think we all predicted Queen of the South to struggle and I’m not backing the managers recruitment / playing style.

The initial query was about asking if Queens are in a relegation battle which is legitimate given the relative infancy of the season.

The answer seems to be a resounding ‘yes’ which is fair enough. I think that Queens are in a battle but, I think that with the correct coaching and motivation (which may be the issue) they’ve got an 11 that is good enough to survive

There's not much room for varying the line-up really,  it's more about the tactics of the management,  attitude and ability of the players we have that has makes  many,  maybe the majority,  of Queens fans think we're doomed,  and were before a ball was kicked.  Add to that we've just escaped the drop for the past two seasons, and had to recruit a squad of players about two weeks before the Betfred cup started, a few untried at this level, and a shortage of defenders. We've also got a Manager who doesn't seem to be able to change things when things are not going right, and is generally reluctant make subs until late in the game. So NO,  we were far from optimistic going into this season.

Was the manager better in his 1st stint? If so, what do you think has changed? Agreed you have a lack of numbers at the back and could maybe use a ball winner in midfield as there are a few technically decent players in there?

^^^ Didn’t see the ICT game on tv type post imo.

I’ve seen a fair amount of Queen of the South, both on TV and live but think it’s early to be consigning yourself to a relegation battle.

Admittedly 7 points off top half but Clyde are the same number off the play offs in L1, Partick are 6 off top - these teams won’t be writing off hopes yet

Transfer window opens in a couple of weeks so some business could still be done

    Are QOS in relegation trouble?

Nah we’re so talented we’ve decided to give those chasing promotion a bit of a start to keep things interesting as the season goes on.

Less than a 3rd of the season gone, winnable game on Saturday which would put you 3 points behind Morton, are you already writing off hopes of doing anything other than battling?

    Well, that's just wrong.

We set up and played a 4-4-2 in each of those matches as well as last week's match against Dumbarton.

James Penrice played as a left winger in each of those matches with Bannigan and Docherty in the centre of midfield with Joe Cardle on the right wing.

Connor Murray supported Brian Graham in the striking roles, he might have drifted a bit deep at times but at no point did he play on the left hand side and at no point were we playing anything other than a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1.

Yeah on reflection that's fair enough. It looked a 4-4-2 attacking but interpreted it as a 4-5-1 off the ball. Murray did drift left a lot and Penrice came inside so at times it looked the latter, but essentially it's just numbers and bodies when the games at full tilt!

That's not to backtrack though, to be fair in attendance my focus has been on opposition both times, so touché sir.

We didn't have an "extra midfielder" against Dumbarton.

We played 4-4-2 - the same as Dumbarton and the exact same formation and starting XI that we played against East Fife and Montrose previously.

I was at your games against Montrose and East Fife. You were  4-5-1 (or 4-3-3 if you want to call it that) with Cardle right of Graham and Murray left. Hence extra man in centre of midfield.

Is this not a needle match, between the two chairman and a few Jags fans?

Anyway, we are fucking hopeless in defense, static in midfield and shot shy up front....

Again, can't see us scoring, will go for 1-0 to the Loons, og.

We discuss the Partick midfield in the latest episode. Needed to make that extra man in there count against Dumbarton, maybe more runs beyond from central areas needed. Could you crowbar Lyons into the middle to do that given that Penrice, Bannigan and Docherty are all relatively defensive-minded?

If we can play like we did against Airdrie last weekend, particularly the back 4, I will confidently be expecting 3 points here. Peterhead always a tricky away fixture for any team though.

How much of that result was you playing well compared to Airdrie being poor? We're split on predicting this one, but I reckon you have to win on the orad some time and this is a decent chance...

McGeever and Reilly the only two players out tomorrow.

Based on that, and with absolutely nothing to lose given we can't score these days, I've decided I want to see us lineup like this.

    Kevin Dabrowski

Sam Wardrop Stuart Carswell Morgyn Neill Rico Quitongo

PJ Crossan Nat Wedderburn Chris Hamilton Adam Frizzell

    Denny Johnstone Jaime Wilson

I was listening to a thing on the radio the other day about (I think) Brentford. And they'd evaluated the previous 10 promotion winners from the Championship and what the side had done, and they came to the conclusion that they had to aim to score two goals per game. Above all else. If they average two goals per game then, statistically, they'd probably be promoted.

That's what we need to do imo. It's all very well getting clean sheets, but if you don't find the net then you'll be relegated. Simple. I'd far rather lose tomorrow 4-3 but show a right good attacking threat, than camp in our own half and draw 0-0. As mental as I'm aware as that might sound.

Do I think Crossan and Frizzell are better centrally than out wide? I think I do, yes, especially with Crossan. But we don't use the wings enough and they'll give us two guys who are happy to take the ball from the defence and drive at players a bit. It'll also give us two natural wingers. Not a left-back on the wing and a wide midfielder. Two actual wingers.

Johnstone can do the #9 role, and Wilson can buzz about him. Will it work? I've no idea, but it's got to be worth a shot. We aren't changing the defence at all so it should be fine, and Wedderburn and Hamilton can both provide plenty of defensive cover - whilst also showing an eye for a pass forwards.

I would imagine the chances of the above team starting however are approximately 77/1.

Like the bit about Brentford. Pity you are struggling to score as you've managed to grind out a few good results regardless. I reckon this could be another scud-apiece, which I assume Sons would take?

Cove fans, is the honeymoon period over yet or are we speaking too soon?

It starts off as a 4-2-3-1. Adam and Byrne deep. Jakubiak on left, Anderson through middle and Gowser on the right. Mullen up top.

Gowser has played as a wide midfielder a fair few times under McPake. The idea is usually some weird diamond to force central midfielders on the pitch and we usually fall to shit with the whole defensive shape out of possession (think back to the game at Inverness last season).

Last week, that attacking 3 all roamed around quite a lot side to side with Jakubiak and Gowser getting inside and Anderson taking periods coming off the flank. Our full backs were also fairly high to support those three to let them move inside. We played some nice stuff in possession (Gowser was at his best and had a couple of brilliant through balls that should have been converted in addition to his goal) but there were a couple of moments in the first half where Arbroath nearly punished us on the flanks with the space we gave them.

Have a feeling tomorrow will go badly wrong for McPake, there's been a couple of improved performances but think Robertson will have a field day if we're setting up with the same defensive shape. Either 3-0 Dundee or 3-0 Inverness.

Funny you say that Harry as we were split like that on the scoreline too. Seeing some consistency at last in McPake's team selection, especially with the central midfield three, what's your best back four in your opinion that you would like to see consolidated?

I’d go with the 4-2-3-1 you’ve got there, but with Thomas on the right and F Murray on the left. Always feel Thomas is more effective on the right, where he has the option of cutting in onto his left foot. Likewise, Murray has looked best when played on the left - see his goal on Saturday.

We were wondering how Crawford was going to approach this one, fancy Murray to start after his impact against Raith, and with Thomas on the other side there's plenty threat of getting down the sides of Morton's back 3.
