That's a great move for Hendry. Tough tasks ahead in that Champions League group but can only benefit him longer term.

He could've been destroyed by that spell at Celtic but he looks to have done well for himself since. That speaks very positively to his mindset.

I still need to see more before I am won over by him as a Scotland international quality player but he's on an upward trajectory in his club career.

I thought you said he was pish? He's the same player that played in the Euros. So fickle

What a total clusterfuck. He had the opportunity to replace Armstrong and didn’t take it.

Both Taylor and Forrest were known about on Sunday, and it’s not a surprise that McGinn, and Patterson couldn’t travel, nor that SOD nor Nisbet might be unavailable.

I don’t buy the complications for a second. Anyone know of another country losing 9 players for their first game this week? Anyone?

It's 7 players. It's easy enough to say in hindsight and typical that in a situation where fans could show sympathy they instead prefer to sharpen the knives. It's always the same: a fan gets disappointed and then lashes out looking for someone to blame. Childish basically.

Do people honestly think Steve Clarke and the team at Scotland planned things to unfold this way? If we know that it wasn't by design, then at worst there were errors which in my book are forgivable.

Standard on this forum, don't worry about it nobody does apparently - just shoot your mouth off and get your frustrations off your chest whether it's fair and balanced or not.

Fair. Having 30 or so players travelling would have posed its own logistical issues. Still, like you say, it's frustrating not to take that burden on in the current environment. There may well have been numerous guys who didn't get on the pitch, but at least they'd have the experience, and Clarke et al would have had a better look at them.

I don't think he has time to look at anyone really. Half the players trained yesterday, most of the players today probably, I'd imagine they'll fly out tonight and train a little tomorrow before the game in the evening. There's no real time and many of the players that can't travel are available for Moldova and Austria. He's obviously trying to keep things pretty simple by going with what he knows and it's worked he doesn't have any tough calls to make really now. 😂

This is what McLeish got slaughtered for doing on the way over to Kazakhstan.

What happens now if Fraser picks up an injury?

Could your nose be up Steve Clarke’s arse any further than it already is?

I never slaughtered McLeish. if Fraser picks up an injury then Tierney or Robertson will play right wing back.

I'm not up Steve Clarkes arse which you would see if you learned to read my posts fully instead of half arsing it. I bet you're the useless c**t that just bitches and moans when shit hits the fan.

Jesus, my head's all over the place.

I'm at the stage now where I'm thinking Tierney at RWB is the best option, but IMO that would require Hendry overlapping from RCB or Gallagher channeling his 2018 displays. It would also mean our RWB would be left-footed and their LWB would be right-footed which doesn't really matter but still.

    Stop panicking. 👀

Fastforward to today and we now don't have enough outfield players to use all our permitted substitutes. I don't understand how this can be allowed to happen.

    I think we do, barely.

Which is a good thing for us.

I'd like to see a couple in with none heading the other way aside from loans.

It makes me question if they're really that good if aren't other teams aren't willing to pay the asking price to get them. Is it crazy money? I thought St Johnstone would only not sell if they got the money from the Conference League.

  8. Yeah I get that. To Joe Public it may seem like a no brainer but there was a tight timescale, possible additional logistical issues we aren't aware of - Steve Clarke isn't stupid and you have to hope he isn't hell bent on sabotaging his own chances of qualifying for the World Cup or we might as well just give up.

It's unfortunate and we just have to concentrate on what we've got in Denmark.

Would it really have been that hard to bring Shaun Rooney or Antony Ralston along for the ride just in case of this exact scenario? I like Ryan Fraser as a player in genera but he’s not an RWB. We were banking on O’Donnell - who hasn’t played for a month and had a nightmare in the last game he played - being able to play here and left ourself with absolutely no back up in case of an emergency.

Steve Clarke previously explained his logic - I'm not saying he's right, just putting it out there.

The result on Thursday will have a massive influence on what will (or will not) happen.

Wishful thinking perhaps but if we qualify for the Europa Conference, I'd like to think the players will want to be part of that despite the derisory offers from bottom half english championship jobbers.

Because they know we won't sell.

McCann was used as an example of that. Plenty of teams want him, but are trying, as teams do, to get them on the cheap. Rooney, McCart, and Kerr are all free to leave next Summer, while we're trying to get in the Groups of Europe, no club is going to pay what we want just now when they can just wait 6/12 months.

The idea players are shite if they aren't moving clubs is bizarre.

    Still haven't seen much movement.

  11. Could do with not losing any more players for the Denmark game or getting one or two replacements which won't happen now, although our first XI is not too badly affected if we need to change things up are we going to have enough options from the available substitutes? I make it that 20 will fly to Copenhagen.

Ryan Gauld has been in the MLS Team of the Week (there's 27 teams in the MLS) for the last 3 weeks running and he's only started the last game - the other two he came on at half time, as he gets match-fit.

Vancouver have won all 3 of those games (Gauld MoM in them all) having only won 3 of their 18 games before that.

He also scored 2 in that Canadian cup tie referred to above - no idea how seriously they treat that competition.

Clarke is taking the piss not giving him his chance!

How easily can he be called up when Vancouver Whitecaps don't have an international break? There is no way he isn't on Steve Clarkes radar - but it seems like it would be complicated. Would the SFA have to pay Vancouver to borrow Ryan Gauld?

This is why we have stuck largely with the core of players who were together in the summer. The main aim is to have a realistic aim of being able to qualify the World Cup after this round of games and that's important and there are many ways we could achieve that:

    Example 1:

    • Scotland lose to Denmark and Moldova, but beat Austria (3 points)
    • Austria beat Moldova, draw in Israel and lose to Scotland (4 points)
    • Israel beat the Faroes, draw with Austria, lose in Denmark (4 points)
    • Scotland, Israel and Austria finish the round on 8 points.

    Example 2:

    • Scotland draw in Denmark, beat Moldova and lose in Austria (4 points)
    • Austria beat Moldova, beat Israel and beat Scotland (9 points)
    • Israel beat the Faroes, lose to Austria and lose to Denmark. (3 points)
    • Austria (13 points), Scotland (9 points) and Israel (7 points)

So even if we earn more points it's not necessarily going to put us in a better position, the head to head matches between Scotland, Austria and Israel are the key games.

  14. Preferred Starting XI and system.

    image.png.4180490384d748e405146322d50abaf2.png

System: Russia played the 3-4-2-1/ 5-2-3 system and although they ultimately were beaten 4-1 it worked really well particularly in the first half until Mikkel Damsgaard scored from nothing and Roman Zobnin gifted Denmark their second goal with a loose back pass to set them on their way. Plenty of pace and bodies in midfield to help to steal the ball in midfield and counter attack Denmark.

Defensively Callum McGregor and Billy Gilmour are definitely a little lightweight, we have seen  particularly with Billy Gilmour being vulnerable for Norwich, but we don't really have a strong physical defensive midfielder other than Lewis Ferguson who I'm not 100% sure on yet. I wouldn't object to Callum McGregor being swapped out for Kenny McLean as they're pretty similar.

I think the defence will be a back five for lots of the game which is why I went for Stephen O'Donnell, but I was tempted to take Ryan Fraser because sometimes the best form of defence is attack and the Danish left wing back Joakim Maehle will leave a lot of space in behind which Ryan Fraser could exploit better than Stephen O'Donnell.

In attack I think we do need energy so that's why I've gone for Ryan Christie over David Turnbull and I could understand if Clarke chooses to use Lyndon Dykes as he would potentially leave space for other attackers by drawing defenders in, however I doubt we will get much joy from Aerial attacks.

It also wouldn't surprise me if Steve Clarke put Andy Robertson to RWB, Kieran Tierney to LWB and Liam Cooper to LCB, he can be a very creative coach in that way.

    Alternative Starting XI and system.
