There is no doubt that Levein has got results. We've got 20 points from 14 games since MacLean was sacked, season form that's 33 points which puts you up there with Killie and St Mirren. He's only lost to the Old Firm and away at Hearts and Killie in the league. Folk will point out also how close we are to the top six.

But it's hard to get your head around because we are still so rubbish. This is the worst Saints team, IMO, in two decades. They make attacking looking so difficult and struggle to build any sort of possession. The width issue was better yesterday but still there for was no one with an ability to worry an opposition full back.

I appreciate we've been blessed with the teams put together from Coyle up to the double winners, but having to accept this being what have we to look forward to is s struggle, i can't lie. Can only hope that Levein intends to put far more of a mark on things.

I think tbh you have to look at the quality of the whole league. It’s so very poor and imo has dropped considerably in last 2/3 years. The teams around and above us are just as bad, the standard of the OF has dropped considerably etc.

Appreciate everything you say but quite honestly the entire league stinks

Smith might get bullied by White so maybe a wee shuffle needed in defence but that's the side I'd go with.

    Which Smith 🤣🤣

We all dream of a team of Smiths

I think we're likely to see a shape similar to that on Saturday.

With Clark out and it being away from home it'll likely be a lone central striker with the likes of Max or Sprangler coming in for him. Extra body in midfield with Carey off Kane.

Yeah I think we’ll see a 3-5-1-1/5-3-1-1 on Sarurday with Carey off Kane, and Smith, Sven and Phillips all starting in midfield. We’ll look to keep it tight and get a hold on the midfield early. Probably same against Celtic too. It might not be pretty but I can see a lot of sense in it against the likes of Hearts and the OF.

kane will allow us to get up the field when we can with Smith advancing when we’re on the front foot?

it will be asking a lot of Robinson and Costelloe, assuming they get the nod at wing back but they have both been coming on well and look like they have the legs for it now.

If we can keep shankland quiet we might be ok. Maybe an argument for Sven to man mark him through the game?

Just saw McLean’s interview after the match, was it really that bad? Sounded like he was probably saying what needed to be said.

From the outside looking in your keeper is decent, Phillips looks good the rest look poor. Harsh to say but you lot appear fortunate to have more than 1 point.

Sven is also very decent. If we have a couple of things to thank macca for from his time as manager its bringing in mitov and sven imo.

I have a similar dislike about Lennon. Sometimes it seems the Lennon show starring Neil Lennon is what's most important and I'm not sure I can cope with all that nonsense. Macca also tried the no nonsense approach with the dressing room and looking in from outside it didn't exactly work either so would Lennon also be overly abrasive as well?

Neilson like you say has done well in Scotland. I'll not pretend I know loads and loads about him but I'm probably less concerned about his style of football.

Although it will depend what you're looking for in terms of style. All I ask is whoever gets the job he offers a happy medium off "it's not exactly sexy but it's okay and playing to the strengths of the players we have" - that's how I'd sum up TW's approach.

I'm fed up of watching Saints play short from the goal keeper then asking the likes of Liam Gordon try to play out. That's not a dig at Liam, it's just not his strength and giving possession away constantly does nothing for his confidence or obviously the results.

In an ideal world it would be attractive football from the back but we currently don't have players capable of it. I'm also not convinced we're capable of attracting the kind of player who can do it either at the moment.

There's a line though and the likes of Craig Levein is too far for me. Stay well clear of him please.

Although, as long as it's not a scumbag I'll absolutely get behind them like I did Macca...

I think I recall a number of players who have played under lennon before saying he was a great manager to play under? Maybe the outward bravado/p***k-ish behaviour is for public consumption only?

yeah I dont particularly mind if neilson just plays solid football (I think hearts fans didnt like the lack of sexy football from him) as that’s what we need to get back to.

Dodds would be a mistake imo. I dont want another ex player (including the likes of morris)

  6. With Stan, rightly imo, saying we will go for experience, and assuming we can’t pay compo so fishing in the free agent market, the obvious ones look like lennon and neilson?

I honestly can’t stand lennon, he’s an annoying wee p***k, but if he was our annoying wee p***k I think he would be capable of creating a dressing room seige mentality which I think we need in the short term at least, and is probably capable of lifting the players.

Neilson hard done by at hearts imo and capable of getting results in this league. Not sure about his style of football though?

I can’t see us going massively leftfield and we’ll be looking for a fairly safe bet but lets see.

  7. We’ll start the game solidly but with 1 up front. Pass the ball about well then concede a soft goal after 20 mins.

The game will be fairly even then at about minute 70 we’ll replace our 1 striker with another lone striker but push up a bit higher.

Somewhere between 80 and 90 mins we’ll concede a second soft as we’re pushed up so high and lack the pace to filter back.

Macca to boot martindale in the puss in injury time.

0-2 at full time and heads gone all over the east stand :(

Carey was playing in the centre for us, which is why Lundstram had so much space every time he picked up the ball. Numerous times Carey would rather mark a CB and leave him unmarked and then turn to furiously moan at the 2 CMs, who were about 20 yards deeper, for not leaving their men to push up on his.

Quite why MacLean thinks, after seeing Carey play regularly for us for over a year now, he was the best option in there i dunno. Do think we're now trapped in a position where he looks the only creative one so keeps getting played, rather than try without him and see if someone steps up. I think Turner-Cooke will give us as much while also working harder and being more mobile, things MacLean said he wanted to build his midfield/attack around, but we'll probably have yet more months of watching Carey flounce about until it clicks.

I was really surprised JTC didn’t start yeaterday. One of the better ones agains Dundee and looks to have a bit about him.

Suspect Max for Wright might happen, with Smith also in for Ballantyne.

Max has been poor and probably doesnt deserve to start, but if youre committing to youth and to giving them a chance, i guess you have to show patience and offer them opportunities to show theyre learning/improving.

Max just isnt suited to playing on the right of a 4 unfortunately. I think its difficult to judge him as a player out there. If he gets a chance to play more central he’ll need to grab it though.

You'd have to think that bringing down average squad age will improve the injury situation over time. Always going to be exceptions of course but in general we should see the benefit.

Tempting as it is to noise up Random by suggesting 5-2-3 (although not sure that's a good option with what we have now) the idea of 4-3-3 seems fairly sensible. Same back 4 as Hearts; Smith, McGowan and Phillips in the middle; Carey, May and Jephcott up front. No pace but if Smith's not a ball-carrier (is he?) but likes a tackle and can see a pass it gives us some bite/disruption and hopefully the capability to move the ball up the park a bit quicker than we've been doing for the last few years. If we're intent on playing a high press as McLean says it's pretty important we get the ball out of midfield faster. That our CB's are prone to shelling it over the middle is maybe understandable when we've lacked the ability to move it on the ground with a bit of urgency.

That would be my starting 11 for Saturday based on who is likely to be available

How many are injury prone players though?

MacPhersons always been a crock. Clarks injury is one he had a few years before he joined. Kanes been unavailable for the best part of 2 years because he keeps hitting set backs, same with Booth. Sinclairs now had at least 2 surgeries in the last 2 years and seems to have had constant bother with his wrists before that.

So thats 5 players you shouldnt be that surprised are out.

Wright was run into the ground last season and played while carrying a knock this season so its hardly a shock hes injured too, and you wouldnt say its bad luck.

I dunno. It shouldn't be that surprising we have so many injuries and id be surprised if it doesnt haunt us all season with the squad as is.

Very fair points - the majority of the injured ones are quite injury prone but I was thinking back over the last couple of years and seem to remember a whole bunch of muscle injuries and niggles? Most of them probably to the injury prone players right enough 😂

Wright probably shouldnt have started Saturday but we’re short on the wings so needs must. Steven is more of a forward but might be able to do a job there this weekend? Unless we change shape and maybe go 433
