That was very good of him and not surprising at all; I always thought he was extremely hard working and a great team player last season, he seemed to be one of the ones who truly cared. I'm pleased that the club didn't let him pay it - I know we're cheap, but surely not that cheap that we'd let a new signing pay his own transfer fee! I also think that (in relation to the previous discussion on compensation for Rae, Connelly etc) this proves that compensation due at this level is extremely minimal. If a 20 year old playing semi professionally for Stranraer can afford to pay his own compensation, it can't be much of a stumbling block.

I listened to the first minute, realised I'd been pronouncing his name wrong for a year (I didn't know it was pronounced Patton not Paiton) and decided it was all too much for me.

I was under the impression that compensation for out of contract u24 players is based on the money spent on their training, and has no relation to their perceived ability. I would imagine that the fees due at this level are very minimal, especially given that they've only spent 1 or 2 years at the club and haven't come through the academy. So I highly doubt that it is an issue, and I can't remember any cases where transfers have been blocked because of the rulings.

I would assume so. Given the lack of communication on the matter as well, I feel the club just see it as him continuing like before. Surely they would have given a proper retirement 'farewell' if he wasn't staying as a player. Edit: And he'll have decided already and have wanted to say something as well, given he's the one building the squad.

He's done just that though so it clearly wasn't just me that thought it would be funny. He'll obviously be working on signings as well, maybe already has some sorted, but I feel like most people should be able to see the humour in the joke, bearing in mind he'll be constantly asked about who he's looking to bring in.

I think it would be pretty funny if that was the case. It keeps fans engaged and will probably give him a laugh at the same time

What classes as a 'busy morning' for Wullie Gibson though? Going to the gym, watering the astroturf, delegating some more jobs to Dan Armstrong? It wouldn't surprise me if he was having us on, and there weren't actually any signings!

It feels strange that we're going into this season as one of the more known quantities in terms of the managerial team, with Wullie and Grant having had a quarter of a season already. As for Airdrie and Rhys McCabe, we'll have to start practising to defend long throws...

I think there isn't much of a difference between the bottom 4 of the SC last season, and the top teams in L1. However, the other half of the table will all be easier fixtures. This bodes well for next season; in our 12 games against the rest of the bottom 4, we won 6 drew 3 and lost 3 (scoring 19 goals and conceding 13), putting us top of the bottom 4 mini league. Not bad for a blunt attack and a shaky defence. Those were 75% of our total wins in one third of the season. It was our fragility against the other 6 teams that ended up being detrimental for us. Our cup games against L1 teams don't make for great reading. We won 2 drew 1 and lost 2, scoring 7 goals and conceding 7. The losses were an opening game of the season encounter with Queen's Park (1-0) and the hammering to Cove Rangers. We played CR twice more both winning and drawing. Obviously CR and QP have both been promoted so our only game against a team in next season's L1 was a 4-1 thrashing of Airdrie. We also beat Annan 3-1 who judging by the L2 table are probably better than Edinburgh City. We have got rid of Allan Johnston so hopefully we are no longer burdened by managerial incompetencies, and I am also excited by the signing of Gavin Reilly, who is almost certainly better than last season's forwards. Our squad is shaping up nicely and as long as it ends up being a competent team, we should at least get to the playoffs and the management and players should be aiming even higher.

Just realised we're set for a centreback partnership of McKay and McKay. Could be confusing! Edit: Also just realised I've been beaten to this...

3 youth players signed up for next season: Lewis Gibson (forward), Jay Burns (fullback) and Ben Johnstone (midfield). Gibson and Burns both played well for Scotland in the Centenary Shield. There are now 6 youth products at the club with Cowie, Muir and McMahon signed for this year as well. Hopefully they'll get their chances and take them.

Him and McKay would be great for League 1. I think had McKay stayed fit we'd have had a good chance of staying up. Hopefully O'Connor is overlooked by championship clubs and we can get him. O'Connor and Reilly are my top two, but don't see us getting either.

I understand the relief given his absence on the first list, I'm probably relieved as well. Abuse was a bit strong but you can hardly say he's been treated graciously by the support.

By that logic we should just keep shit players if they're cheap? He wasn't good enough even for the fringe. I wasn't suggesting that we keep him, or even that he deserved more of a chance, only that his release doesn't warrant the celebration it's got (and he doesn't deserve the abuse he's got) when there are players who have also been rubbish but with gametime as well.

He probably featured more often than you recall but given he was a complete ghost in the middle it's understandable to have forgotten. A truly awful excuse for a footballer. He played 728 minutes in the Championship over his 2 seasons, effectively 8 full games. I know you hate him but he was just a fringe player, and whilst he wasn't good enough to start I'm sure paying him less than £300 a week didn't dent the wage bill too much.
