It can all come down to wages and what sort of playing time either is willing to accept but I can't help but think that I'd rather have Bevis as first backup CB/RB than SOD.

Bevis at RB? Nah, the experiment of trying that against Hibs in the Scottish Cup back-fired inside the first minute.

Rebuilding take: Main thing with Bevis for me was he was making the same mistakes in his final season as he was in his first. I think given he was put on a decent contract under Alexander it was the best time for him to leave now. He can absolutely do a job, wouldn't at all be surprised to see him stay in the SPFL, either bottom six Premiership or top end of the Championship.

Birthday caird pish take: I like Bevis, all the best to him, seems like a genuinely brilliant guy and when he was good he was pretty good. He was absolutely magic at Ibrox in the win there this season, an absolute colossus that day. Hope he gets a decent move, because he's one of fitba's good guys.

  2. I don't think anyone has said just sign Jack? Literally everyone responding has said IF he's fit...

Just had a quick look, over the last eight seasons he's averaged 31 games a season, lowest number of appearances was 21 in 17/18. He played 22 times last season FWIW. I'm not saying we should sign him, but I don't think it's fair to say he's been done for like 8 years.

On the subject of defenders, I noticed that there seemed to be a lot of hand wringing and pearl clutching going on over on Steelemen the other day (presumably after SODs contract extension was announced).

Someone asked the question along the lines of "how much meaningful change to the defence can there be now!" (I'm paraphrasing there). Anyway, it occurred to me that between Balmer (last seen at TopGolf Glasgow yesterday), the excellently named Johnny Koutroumbis and Archie Davies so far all the concrete links we've heard in the press have been for...defenders.

I mean, while we've clearly retained a few bodies from last season's squad (none of whom should have been a surprise to anyone) there are still plenty of gaps to fill.

Folk really can't seem to grasp "squad rebuild" eh? I think keeping some experienced heads around is a good move.

  4. The Inverness Caley Thistle debacle is a timely reminder of why fan ownership should be at the centre of any investment we're looking at as a club. And why giving it up should not even have been a "hypothetical" question.

They are in an absolute state and now looks like they're being flogged off to the highest (although probably not that high) bidder.

While I'd say we're a bigger club than ICT, with a larger fanbase, that really doesn't matter if you've folk running the place who don't actually care about the club.

I'm also bored with the EB/investment chat, if he's not actually offering anything that's worth us doing and is that bothered at being left out he can join the Well Society and fire as much money as he wants in that way. He's doing it because he's fallen in love with the club right?

On that though, and as a WS member, I hope this has all been a bit of a wake up call. The new folk on the board seem to have some great ideas and are impressing, so not aimed at them, but I think fan ownership has been taken for granted by some at the club in recent years, engagement isn't good, voting stats/turnouts show that. There is a fair bit to do to get folk, including some I've spoken to who are still members, back fully on board with it.

Easton is one of those where I reckon he'd be good to have as an option. I'm not sure I'd be that bothered if we didn't sign him. Good player for sure, but not a guaranteed starter.

I sometimes get the vibe the "oddball reply guys" (enjoyed that btw @capt_oats) just get buzzing or overly excited about the most vague rumours, or any chat of links. Automatic stance is that if someone said they are signing for us, then it must be true and they must be an amazing player. Bizarre.

The "oddball reply guys" will be devastated.

I never really bought into there being much in the whole Easton chat. As I said above, he's a decent player at the level he's playing at, but surely we're looking elsewhere for our creative options? Not proven at this level, no resale value, would have been a strange one.

  6. One of the few things Hammell actually got right was us moving away from keeping folk on the wage bill who don't contribute, Scott Fox was an example of that. Hammell moved him on quickly and was vocal about us not keeping that trend or being a rehab facility.

Kettlewell has said the same and, as we all know, is a bit of a master of mutualling folk.

Slattery has been offered a deal because he's a good player, who has contributed in each of the three years he's been with the club. I don't think it's a sympathy or a "we need to keep him around for his rehabilitation" move, I think the club want to hang on to a good player, when he's on his game there is no denying he's a very good option at this level.

  7. Delighted with Nicholson signing.

Mallan? Meh. Always thought of him as a bit like Spittal but without the endeavour, can score the odd screamer though in fairness. I'm really not sure he'd be someone I'd spend a lot of budget trying to get, as good on the ball as he might be. He'd probably enrage some within our support though, so that'd be a laugh if it did happen.

Suppose he could be moulded into our new Goss, who was fucking class for us.

No doubt though it was suggested in January that Killie was his destination so we probably didn't get very far down the line.

Stevie Mallen is probably the next target we'll be linked with before he signs for St Mirren.

Aye you get the vibe that Anderson's deal was done around the time of Spittal's to Hearts, which will surely be fully confirmed in the coming days.
