  1. I'd be inclined to go 4231:

    Rogers

    Kidd/Muirhead - Grant/McCracken - Gasparotto/Watson - Leahy/Gallagher

    Kerr/Rankin - Taiwo/Sibbald

    Craigen/Baird/Shepherd - Sibbs/Craigen/Hippo - Hippo/Sibbs

    Miller/McHugh/Baird/Austin/Sheps/O'Hara

Keeps our more effective players in more or less their best positions, although highlights the lack of a decent right mid (with pace). Used to feel that was Shepherds for the taking but he's flying in a central role for the dev squad.

  2. How can this be considered secret if Peter Houston knows about it?

We're unlikely to have made an approach given we already have 4 first team strikers. A quality right mid/winger is what we need.

For all Dobbie may love Queens, and their fans will be justifiably delighted with his signing, he won't be on peanuts. They ought to be solid top 4 this season, especially if Harris and Carmichael go back there. And all the best to them, that sort of ambition ought to be rewarded.

Whether we're top 4 with them remains to be seen, the likes of Miller and Rankin to name but 2 will be on a reasonable wedge.

Without knowing the details I would suspect Housties intention was to pressure the board to release more funds to compete. Bit late for that now though it must be said

  3. It's strange Swansea have gone from buying our young players after a couple of seasons of first team football and around 100 appearances, to buying development squad players based on their current technical ability/projected potential.

It's kind of annoying for those of us that were looking forward to seeing them develop some way with us in the first team

Apart from the transfer fee it means we're really not getting any benefit from them

I accept that it helps us attract young talent to the academy, but you have to wonder what the point of being a nursery club in this manner is

  4. Great finisher but not really a right sided midfielder. Far better through the middle but we've got a pile of options there unfortunately for him.

Yes its fair to say his loss of form coincided with him being shifted wide right. Shame as hes potentially our biggest goal threat from midfield

Wasnt he top scorer a few seasons back?

I'd hate to see him go, but if he does I hope he gets a good move

  5. Blair Alston of 2-3 seasons ago was by far my favourite player

PLayed centrally in the classical number 8 position he was great, full of neat touches and clever runs

At a time when we scored very little from midfield he was a godsend

He lost form a fair bit over the last couple of seasons so its good to see him rediscovering his form and his scoring boots

    Scored a few beauties too

  6. Only disappointed in the sense we don't have cover for either full back at the moment. Suppose Vaulks could fill in at right back but you wouldn't want to move him from midfield.

    Finlayson and Gallagher isn't it?

Could do with a specialist first choice right back right enough, I'd rather see Muirhead playing centrally.

Not that McCrackens done much wrong, but Watson can be distressingly error prone

  7. If ever there was a time to consider taking a calculated risk, it would be now.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say 3rd place is in the bank.

2nd place buys one less round of play off games and first automatic promotion.

Winning the title isn't as outrageous a suggestion now as it was in July.

As the grass is greener above suggests, rangers sense of desperate sweaty entitlement suggests they'll pull their usual shabby tricks.

Expect laughable bids for Cummings and Vaulks in the next couple of weeks.

Assuming we keep our squad together I'd suggest all we need is a new right back. Move muirhead alongside grant, as that would be a fearsome pairing in the centre.

On further reflection perhaps another option up front wouldnt go amiss, not sure the score with McHugh, but we've only got Miller and Baird with O'Hara as backup.

Love those guys but any injuries there and we're looking short. That lad the Morton lot made a sticky mess of themselves over probably not the answer, but a Higginbotham type player wouldn't go amiss.

  8. Taylor was a better player as well as having a better scoring record than Farid, no error.

Farid had a far better rapport with the fans however and so is regarded with greater fondness.

Not sure what the queens fan earlier fails to understand about this.

One thing Farid and Lyle do have in common is the ordinariness of their careers since leaving us.

Though I'd happily take a couple of grand a week to sit on a bench every Saturday afternoon tbf

  9. You clearly don't know their mindset.

We had debt in the top league.

    No I can't say I do.

And if that's the case then this is the first time in years we've been debt free.

If we're still not competing with a division on an even keel, then I'll sign up for the pant shittery myself.

I do expect us to do well this season though. Really can't see sinmurn offering anything tbh.

  10. Pantshitter eh?

Unlike you I think I have been pretty consistent on my line about how the club is run.

At no time have I said we go mad but it looks like fans like you have been conditioned to the mediocrity that the current owners of the club have served up in the last six years. No ambition and the seem to have conditioned supporters to their "plucky losers" mantra.

I loved the build up to the cup final but from about 4.50pm at Hampden it turned into the worst experience watching Falkirk ever.

How we got to the cup final is pretty simple. An extremely fortunate draw and a huge slice of luck in the semi.

As I understand it we never cleared our post relegation debt until the sale of Kingsley last summer.

McGrandles sale adding an element of financial security.

Even the pars, county, thistle and Dundee championship seasons we were struggling financially, albeit we found gems in Farid Lyle and Loy.

With the 3 big city teams last season (and 2 this) its quite blinkered to suggest that this is accepting mediocrity, rather than accepting financial reality.

The board are being cautious for sure, but surely this is a long term necessity?

I want us back up top and qualifying for European competition too, but I'm content to see us do that from a position of strength at the right time.

  11. Baird will get about 12. McHugh or Biabi need to step up. Sibbs needs to get 8-10. Set pieces.

I don't disagree though. The defence looks far stronger than the attack.

Not sure what Houston's MO was at united but it looks like he's building a solid if unspectacular squad that will be harder to beat than previous seasons.

A cautious but necessary approach perhaps.

As someone mentioned earlier, good strikers available at the wages we can currently offer are a little thin on the ground.

Noted too that in his herald spot Houston mentions the 'pathway from academy to first team' line, in order to attract ambitious young players.

Time for Biabi Shepherd and O'Hara to step up then in other words.

  12. We could've had McHugh on loan last season, we should've had someone in after Loy was injured but no, we let the 31st March deadline pass.

I don't think we have used the loan market that well tho, shug was decent, Millar obviously but nothing much to note since the big English loans of stokes, krull and Schmichael.

We won't also break the bank this season with rangers and kiddy on Celtic in the league unless in January we are sitting nicely

    My thoughts also.

Both last season and this there are at least 2 clubs in the div that can out resource us by a long way

Going balls out financially to achieve promotion would be detrimental in the event of failing to do so

The board are rightly being prudent in these circumstances

Thats not to say we shouldnt be extremely competitive this season, 3rd place ought to be the expectation
