It looks likely that it will be Smith. It's a pity that someone like Graham is not interested but we seem to be littered with folk who justified or not, do not want anything to do with the national team.

As for Smith, here are the reasons that I'm not too unhappy.

1. He will be a lot cheaper than Berti.

2. The players will have more respect for him.

3. He will be a safe pair of hands ie like Craig Brown's teams - hard to beat.

4. If we don't get to the next Euros he out of here.

5. I am no fan of Smith. Murray won the league for Rangers for years and this showed when Smith went down south. Therefore, a manager with potential at this level (Strachan) does not get his reputation seriously damaged. We will improve with Smith, slightly. We still do not have the players yet and will not improve until the kids coming through the 1st division and reserves and youth teams of the larger clubs develop. Better to steady the ship for a year or two until then.

Roll on an 18 team top division.

In all the justifications for Smith being manager, I'm suprised that no-one has mentioned the part he played at Dundee United with Jim McLean - winning leagues, cups and amazing success in Europe - all on a shoetring...............
