Wiggins hit the nail on the head in his post race interview. He rode an absolutely perfectly paced race, but when Tony Martin is on form like that no one on earth can get near him.

It will be interesting to see how Froome rides this, because he'll have to shell Purito, Valverde, Cancellara etc. who will hammer him in a sprint. Should be an interesting race, would be quite something to see GB control a whole race again.

Because Gilbert can`t win a sprint eh...

Still have Gilbert as favourite, Cancellara has a chance as well. Peter Sagan is a bit of a wildcard, only really been racing in Canada since the Tour de France, not sure he`ll have the form of those that have come from the Vuelta.

That's why I left it as an etc. I couldn't be arsed typing out every single contender.

Today's Sunday Times reports that Sky rider Jonathan Tiernan-Locke is under investigation for doping, following suspect blood values in his biological passport. The values date back to September 2012.

Seems to date back to his last season with Endura Racing where he won everything he entered. Which might be the reason why since signing for Sky he's stopped it and is riding like a donkey.

Rui Costa (Portugal) wins the World Road Race Championship today in Florence in a race lasting over seven hours.

The entire British team pulled out of the race:

Interesting to note Wiggo, & his sidekick Standard, bailed out about the same time as Cav. Speaks volumes about the atmosphere in the Sky team.

Wiggins was involved in a crash that took out a good few other big names.

To be honest, I don't really think Froome would have had a chance at that today. If it was just one big climb, then probably. Not lots of small ones.

the uk team never had a chance. the course was always going to make it a war of attrition and the top ten was all big hitters. purito, valverde, nibali, sagan, gilbert and cancellera are stars, iglinskiy won LBL and grivko is going to be awesome. top marks to whoever designed the route.

1 Rui Alberto Faria Da Costa (Portugal) 7:25:44 2 Joaquim Rodriguez Oliver (Spain) 3 Alejandro Valverde Belmonte (Spain) 0:00:17 4 Vincenzo Nibali (Italy) 5 Andriy Grivko (Ukraine) 0:00:31 6 Peter Sagan (Slovakia) 0:00:34 7 Simon Clarke (Australia) 8 Maxim Iglinskiy (Kazakhstan) 9 Philippe Gilbert (Belgium) 10

Fabian Cancellara (Switzerland)

before the race i actually fancied the movistar riders - visconti, valverde and costa - and i'm not surprised costa won after his showing at the tour. he's apparently signing for lampre so it'll be interesting to see how he holds up next year.

the JTL thing is pretty funny. sky don't have any choice but to defend him because they had all the data when they signed him but if his passport tripped the wire it must be properly fucked up considering the values horner is happily publishing.

2014 Tour route unveiled:

http://inrng.com/2013/10/2014-tour-de-france/

Like the starting stages in Yorkshire, cobbled stages, Vosges mountains, and Pla d'Adet stage, the rest is pretty standard fair, woeful use of the Alps.

Latest odds:
