Wonder why Astley isn't getting a chance, thought he did alright last season.

He's never gonna let you down.

Yes, definitely some poor refereeing at that level but I’ve got to say the two lines often don’t help in the slightest.

All joking aside have you considered becoming a ref?  Pick up a couple of games at the weekend and a couple of mid week games for a wee bit extra cash.

Yeah the respect from lines is imo getting worse (as is the overall standard but that’s maybe just my rose tinted specs talking)

I’ve thought about it and even looked at the course - £35 if anyone’s interested.

But I work pretty long hours Mon-Fri so like to keep my weekends for the kids.

Believe it’s £50 a game now - which if you get a kids game at 30 or 35 mins each way isn’t a bad little earner.

50 quid? Imagine the abuse you would get from a bunch of morons.

Not worth the bother. IMO.

Thank you.

I've always thought you need to be a wee bit odd to get into refereeing. It may have been influenced by the people that were similar age to me that did get into it were absolute f**king oddballs.

I remember one in particular who is now involved with the council did his work experience at school, in the school library and literally just changed his school tie and absolutely loved the power of shouting at S1s. He went on to become a referee and work for the council in later life.

So as I say, power hungry, weird oddballs.

Without referees there wouldn’t be any football.

£80 11s u18s and £40-£60 for 9s. This is in the Glasgow area. They try to get you up the ladder quick.

McCracken and Koumetio need dropped. I don't think that solves all the issues we have defensively, but at least it would be a start.

Koumetio is just making mistakes every game that we can't afford to keep giving away. He was excellent for 85 minutes or so on Saturday. The way he got pushed off the ball for their third at the weekend was reminiscent of the goal we conceded v Hibs that was his fault too. Just lightweight pish - he's a unit, he shouldn't be anywhere near as weak as that.

I'm really worried about the amount of goals we are conceding and to be honest it's something that has always been an issue with Docherty's team - this season and last. If we don't sort it out quickly, then we will be in a relegation battle. We have been on a bad run since the County game but still miraculously find ourselves around the mid-table, so I'm not hugely worried yet as there are a lot of games to go.

The teams around us will improve though.

We need to come out of the next two games unbeaten because the run after this isn't ideal at all.

My pals a ref here and it’s definitely only £50 a game in Dundee area, all the way up to men’s ammies. I imagine when you hit Juniors it would go up, but never asked.

He only does girls games on a Saturday - £50 - £100 in the hipper - virtually zero abuse, bit of exercise and into the boozer after it. Just a bit of beer money for him.

I watched a bit of a boys club friendly yesterday while walking the dog - ref looked a kid himself and some of the shouts from the side of the park were horrific - shirt pulling was renamed “shirt lifting” by one of the parents and he just kept shouting about it every time a challenge went in.

“Ho ref, you need to stop the shirt lifting” etc - don’t think the young ref understood the connotations of that tbh. Also heard one coach just continually shout for his boys to go in harder and harder and all round a really awful atmosphere so I departed.

Wouldn’t fancy it for me or my kids - but there’s a young lad earning £50 an hour at age 16/17 if I had to guess so fair play to him.

In Dundee, when my son played football, a full 11 a side game was not permitted until the age of 11 if I recall correctly.  Prior to that it was 7 a side football on a smaller pitch. The refereeing was done by a parent from one of the sides.  I assume that was done due to the lack of referees available and / or for the clubs to save money.

Muggins here got lumbered with refereeing each week.  Despite the fact I would consciously give any benefit of the doubt to the opposition team I was still fairly regularly shouted at.  A thankless task.  Nobody happier than me when the full 11 a side matches began with proper referees.

The above is part of the reason I don’t usually criticise referees too often. Having said all of that I still can’t understand what the referee was thinking when he sent off Sylla!

I’m a qualified referee and will be starting soon. The young kids who are starting football are getting educated on the abuse and they aim to cut it out. You can pick and choose which games to take. The younger kids and girls games are best for less abuse but will but if you want to progress then you need to do referee knowing you will get the abuse. The referee on Saturday wasn’t good enough but they are desperate and he’s probably the best available.

Is this nonsense acceptable for a professional football league?

Even with the help of VAR these clowns are f**king up games every single week, like the shite we saw on Saturday.

It's always in the back of my mind now, will we get a decent official, or a moron?

Thank you.

A lot of them just want the money and don’t care much about the outcome of their descions. It’s a part time job. Maybe around 30k and potentially much more for the year and they may have another job. John Beaton works at Scotrail as his other job but there is some that probably do It as their main job as they’ve got the European ties and international games.

It’s a very good 2nd income if you get to top level I believe.

However - I understand the SFA Ref Association have an “unofficial” referee retirement age for the top level around 40 maybe just under - they can’t have it in writing obviously but think people tend to get shuffled down the way after 38 - which for me is mental as all that experience just disappears. There are a couple exceptions to this - but for the most part you’ll see them drop away from top level games as the man in the middle and more likely to see them as 4th officials.

Absolutely they need to be fit - but I know people aged 40+ who are fitter than they have ever been - it’s not like they are playing the game and need to be proper “match fit” - just need to be able to cover 10km + at a steady pace.

I also heard you can specialise as a linesman and milk it for longer albeit at a reduced rate.

Shouldn't be much competition in Scotland to reach the higher levels. Decent secondary job i suppose, not for me but each to their own - wouldn't be listening to that Ludo clown. As always spouting pish.

Thank you.

Specialising as an assistant is a decision referee’s make relatively early in their careers.

All assistants in the Premiership are “specialist assistant referees”, meaning that’s all they do. They decide to take the assistant pathway when progressing from category 3.

Category 3 and below can referee games below the SPFL, but also be an assistant up to Championship level.

That's Angus Gunn dropping out of the Scotland squad.

Craig Gordon turns 42 before the end of the year and the other two goalkeeping options both played at Dens on Saturday.

Terrifying prospect.

A young man in goalkeeping terms, 24 years of age making his way in the game, head and shoulders to any competition he has at the club and all I hear is criticism?

Unless we sign a superior keeper which obviously won't happen, let's support him until he at least has better protection on a consistent basis in front of him.

We did not lose on Saturday due to one goalkeeping error for 2-1 and what should have been a late undeserved consolation goal, not an overall complete team meltdown!

Over to you Tony Doc as always.
