Annan Athletic v Berwick Rangers, Saturday 13th September

Recommended Posts

Good highlights, but it's a little hard to tell what's going on a points - who was the Berwick defender who gets suckered into contesting a high ball with two Annan players? And where was the right-back? (Outstanding finish by Stuart McColm right enough.)

And who was the left-back who allowed Kenny Mackay to head in unchallenged?

If anyone can help me identify the players mentioned, I would be grateful.

Fairburn having to deal with 2 players in air for first goal. Maybe he was supposed to be right back but got pulled over.

Jacobs came on for the injured Hoskins at left back, but at the corner it's seems to be Fairburn again that has left Mackay completely unmarked.

It's Fairbairn not Fairburn. It's tough for a defender to come off the bench as it is but we seemed to go to a weird 3-5-2 formation with Fairbairn at RB, he's a centre half. How Mackay has had that much space is unexplainable - why was the whole defence past the penalty spot?!

We looked powederpuff on Saturday. You can play al the pretty football in the world and boss possession as much as you like, but if you don't use it to hurt the opposition then its worth the square root of sweet f**k all. Annan looked bereft of confidence in the first half, particularly at the back and the centre of the park, and there was a feeling that if we opened the scoring against them then it could sink them, but to be honest, a few potshots apart, and a brilliant save from Willis's cross early in the second period, Mitchell had very little to do. Despite being trussed up like an extra from Return of the Mummy, McKay showed us how it's done with a barnstorming second half performance, and he got excellent support from McColm on his debut. We jsut did'nt have that kind of cutting edge, and the experiment of playing Dalziel as the lone striker failed. He was simply lumbering in comparison to McKay.

The manager's decision to drop Bald baffled everyone. OK, so the defence made some errors at Clyde (though there was a clear foul on Fairbairn for their opener), but to drop 3 of the back 4 including one of the best keepers in the league, seems extreme. Andrews just does'nt inspire the same confidence, If you apply the same rules to Saturday's defeat, will the manager drop himself after nearly gifting Carcary the opener at Galabank? Both Curries were much missed, though it was encouraging to see PC warming up on Saturday even if he did'nt get on. Ross Gray said he hopes to be back in 2-3 weeks, so the managers' options are getting better all the time. Kerr Young was quietly impressive on his debut, adding some physical presence to the central defence, and he looks comfortable on the ball too. A good signing in prospect.

Saturday highlighted another concern though - the way that Maxwell, Willis and Gold seem to run out of steam after an hour. Is it a fitness thing? They may have the chance to improve that - Lee Currie said we're playing a French team at shielfield tomorrow night, which might be worth a look if there's public access.

It's only 5 games into the campaign, so no league will be won or lost yet. Rovers look the team to beat though, despite the absence of John Gemmell (here's hoping he's still out on saturday coming), and without the Curries, looks set to be our toughest test yet.

Think it was a team of U-20s coached by CC playing against our U-20s. Behind closed doors at the request of the Eurpopean Commission. No idea what the score was. First sign of a new entente cordiale, post-yes vote.

Berwick won 3-2 apparently, youth football Scotland were there for some reason.
