hollerman
Central League - Division 1 Saturday 9th May 2015 MARYHILL 2 RENFREW 1 Maryhill’s remarkable late surge in form continued with a narrow victory over Renfrew, and saw them regain second place in the league. Maryhill had the better of the opening exchanges, but failed to turn their outfield dominance into goals. Kieran Furay saw a low shot skid across the goalmouth and past the post, then Paul Coyle’s 30 yard drive was well saved by Renfrew keeper Mark Baird. A fine flowing move involving Andy Monaghan, Justin Begg, and Paul Callender ended with the latter shooting narrowly past, before the visitors started to come more into the game. Their first serious threat came after twenty minutes when a Ross Campbell header was cleared off the line by Kieran Furay, and they had better luck fifteen minutes later when Scott Arthur’s powerful header found the net to put Renfrew ahead. The lead only lasted for six minutes when, following a Luke Tolland corner, Justin Begg fired home from close range to equalise for Maryhill. Renfrew missed a good opportunity to regain the lead just before the break, when Ross Hocknull set up Jamie Benton, but he shot wide of the target from a good position. Half Time – Maryhill 1 Renfrew 1 The second half was a pretty scrappy affair overall, with misplaced passes the order of the day, but in view of the heavy schedule of games undertaken by both sides over the last couple of weeks, this was perhaps not too surprising. Scott Arthur had a chance to grab a second goal for the visitors when through on goal, but Grant Hay pulled off a good save to thwart his attempt. Luke Tolland’s overhead kick a few minutes later was the closest Hill came, before they finally got what was to prove the winning goal midway through the half. Kieran Furay appeared to be pulled back by Marc McDaid as he was about to shoot for goal inside the Renfrew penalty area. Referee Mark Ainslie allowed Hill the advantage at first, then halted play to award a penalty kick. After a few minutes of protests, bookings for McDaid and Ross Campbell, and general melee, Shaun Fraser confidently sent the ball low into the net to secure the three points for Maryhill.
