Salary Cap for Scottish Football?

Recommended Posts

There's salary caps in Rugby Union in the UK.

There's no such cap in France which is why you see players going over there for the mega buck$$

Also the Kontinental hockey league, mostly Russian teams there with a few from the EU. They have a cap at around £20 mil.

There are ways around the salary cap in MLS, so probably not the best model. Is there one in Europe that might provide a model?

I like the idea of a cap. I suppose the impoverished state of affairs here - compared to European neighbours - is a de facto cap.

MLS ways around salary cap are brilliant, IMO, as they don't compromise competitiveness. I'd definitely prefer a cap like MLS rather than some strict cap.

MLS lets each team choose, lower salary cap BUT you can sign 1 to 3 "big name" players to as high a salary as you want. OR you can have higher salary cap but no such names. So MLS has some teams with no big names but roster is more balanced, and they have teams with a few "names" but less balanced rosters.

In the end the rich teams have a chance to spend their money on big name players, but all teams have a chance to compete.

MLS also lets you keep some of the youngsters you develop. What happens if you have a strict cap and you develop a really good youngster and you have no room to pay him? There definitely needs to be a way for teams to keep their young talent, like MLS.

We should definitely lower the bar for the other teams to make it easier for them to challenge. If that doesn't work we could play with 9 players, if that doesn't work we could start with a 2 goal deficit.

The last thing your typical OF fan wants is a fair fight.

This is just the latest little scrap of evidence.

Its really only the english that have a salary cap.....the celtic sides in the pro 12 simply live within their means albeit in the case of scottish sides the budgets are centralised from the sru. English clubs moan about it despite the fact that it has stopped clubs spending beyond their means.....they complain about not being able to spend enough when they lose to celtic sides with far smaller budgets. As for french of course players with a short career should chase best career options but it has squeezed the number of french players getting top level game time and has started to impact their national team. How sustainable it will be for french in long term is yet to be seen but thats their problem. Its excellent for any scottish players to get out there to broaden their horizons and get big game experience in a different environment. Cant see why we havent got some sort of financial fair play rules here ie you cant spend more than your income other than to simply indulge the of fans. In fact for newco it would have been in their interests to not be allowed to spend beyond their revenue streams. A straight salary cap is easy to circumvent but restrictions on overall spending should apply but never will whilst the sfa / SPFL panders to the of

Yep, it could be good for the Rangers, but overall it's probably tough to implement it in lower divisions, because some teams from small towns probably don't have enough fans to survive without an owner giving them some money every year. So then you would have to have some exceptions, it gets tricky.

Premiership teams already have to follow it if they want to get to Europe.

Anyway, FFP and cap are very different, since the point of cap is to make teams more equal and more competitive. FFP is basically administration prevention measure, not about equality.
