The EU has already laughed that suggestion off.

Theresa May could end up the Johnny no mates of politics.  She will be an irrelevance in the EU and any relationship to Trump will be a subservient one.  She will be remembered as the idiot that tried to sort out Cameron's mess.  She was desperate for the job but will be the equivalent of Moyes at Man U.

No much of a fan of Big Tree, but reckon she's genuinely trying her whole best to make some sense of this shit storm, perhaps she could be the conduit between fractured EU/USA relations under Donald Trump?

What can she offer him apart from tea with the Queen? Maybe stop the windmill project offshore of Balmedie? The UK is fun because of that lunatic groveller Farage, and his golf course investments that are going tits up, but other than that the UK will be at the bottom of his must do list. If he has something serious to discuss with Europe it will be directly with Merkel. The amount of toadying Boris had to do to get the meeting will not give Trump the impression he has to do anything for May.

Aye, she's got f*ck all to offer as the leader of one of the top five economies on the planet, you guys are so insular and blind sometimes as to what the UK has to give. Let's start with the World's 2nd largest Aid budget (after the US)! There's plenty of things wrong with this country, but we certainly have a part to play in trying to improve our lot along with friends and neighbours.

Would be nice if the glorious U.K. would improve things for people not inside the M25

Aye, it's all bad, Yorkshire's economy alone is bigger than both Ireland and Denmark. Do you see what I mean by insular? Sorry got to go 10mins walk to the ground.

How the hell do measure the Yorkshire economy? GERY ?

It doesn't seem to be GDP,Denmark's is double that of Yorkshire.

ETA from Study in Yorkshire website.

Yorkshire’s economy mirrors its size and diversity: with finance, legal, manufacturing, medical, digital, retail, food, agriculture and nuclear all strong sectors contributing to a healthy economy. On top of this tourism in Yorkshire is worth over £7 billion which is more than the total tourism expenditure of many other countries such as Ireland or Denmark.

So more tourists than Ireland or Denmark.

As has been mentioned the Donald doesn't give a fuck about aid unless it's in the form of tax deductions for US property developers. The average tariff for our exports to the US is only about 2% as it is, what could we offer him to to get him to drop it lower, with our market of 64 million versus the rEU of 680 million? Sell off the NHS to US investors maybe? After we needed to get the Yanks to bail us out of Basra and Helmund and made a total cock up of Libya I doubt he's too bothered about military cooperation.

Recall I'd heard it at a UK Forward Investment conference a couple of years back, clearly mistaken, hands up!

UK is no longer in the top 5 economies since the brexit vote.

It's on a downward trajectory.

Since overtaken by France

The World Bank still has the UK listed at 5 (2017) with the BoE adjusting growth outlook up to 2% for 2017, only just last Friday.

The FT however reported that the French economy grew by just 0.2% in the final quarter of 2016.

Hard to know who to believe eh?

The Fraser of Allender Institute are pretty good.

Investopedia predicts UK will be 9th by 2021.

I appreciate there is an amount of " crystal ball " gazing involved.

If you revel in negativity your life will be negative and all your interactions will be negative. It will become a self fulfilling prophesy.

I prefer to..

The switch in places was driven by the collapse in Sterling against the Euro following Brexit

The 4th quarter of 2016 saw a recovery by Sterling which while small compared to the earlier drop may have been enough to move the UK numbers ahead again, at least by some measures

This would explain the confusion. Sterling has dropped a bit since new year so it may be France that's currently ahead.

However to focus on this is probably futile partly because being slightly bigger or slightly smaller than France doesn't make a practical difference they're effectively the same size

But mainly because in the context of trade the EU has a common trade policy so should probably be considered as a single entry on the list
