Try the Canadian Subhumans if you like aggressive old skool hardcore punk. I’m seeing Poison Idea next week!

The evidence is far wider. Chronixx, Kabaka Pyramid, Protoje, Jah9, Alborosie and Koffee are all dedicated rastas who have emerged in the last 5 years (apart from Puppa Albo, although he has increased in popularity), become international stars transcending the genre and gaining airplay on major radio stations, and they all produce that uplifting, informative, spiritual roots reggae which was largely missing in the 90s and 00s*. *Although if you knew where to look, you could find it - e.g. Lutan Fyah, Pressure Busspipe ...it just wasn't as popular.
Priti priti priti Patel
I actually came into the music forum this evening to create a thread for reggae, and funnily enough this one had been bumped to the top. It seems to be more about punk and ska to be honest and a lot of the music posted here doesn't fit the kind of vibe I am into. I think it's great that skinheads and rastas found common ground in Britain in the 70s and 80s, opposing Thatcherism and British imperialism, and that the two genres crossed over. But what I love about roots reggae is the bare dirt authenticity of it, down to the point that locks are what naturally occur when Afro hair is left untreated, and the whole ska and punk fashion of hats, suits, mopeds or whatever it is runs contrary to that. I want to share the vibes I love with anyone who will listen, so I'll post a few here and see how they're received, but I might start an alternative thread called something like "roots reggae" or "modern roots reggae" or something to respectfully distinguish it from this one.

It's a Reggae festival and that's about all I know, will Google it if I remember when I get in. Just a few folk from the pub I drink in that try out different festivals were on about it, I said I'd be up for it as long as Saints are out of Europe by then. There reply was aye it'll be fine as its in July. c***s. Did you go to SummerJam in the end Tam? If not, or for anyone else interested, it is Europe's largest reggae festival and takes place on an island in the middle of a lake on the outskirts of Cologne. I went in 2013 and it was an almost spiritual experience, and I went back again in 2019 with my nephew to see it through more adult eyes. Camping is free with your ticket, and you camp amongst the trees on the shore of the lake, and then cross a bridge (or row a dingy) onto the island for each day's festivities. You can swim in the lake as well. The whole park feels as though it is set low down into the earth, with hefty electricity pylons sweeping low across the camping area, a floodlit motorway flyover emerging from the trees at the far end of the park, and industrial chimneys with red warning lights for military jets circling the site. The first year I went, aided possibly by the abundant marijuana, and sitting in my tent while nyabinghi drums played from campers across the water, it really felt like a communion of dissidents who had made a pilgrimage to live on the earth for a few nights, contrasted against that surrounding presence of the western (babylonian) system. Yeah, reading that back, it was definitely aided by the abundant marijuana! Always a good mix of big names from the UK and Jamaica plus a few acts (e.g. Gentleman, Patrice) who are big in Europe but less well known elsewhere. Ticket prices much cheaper than large UK festivals once camping is included. Highly recommended to all!
BillyAnchor
If anyone has modern reggae to share I would listen. I am pretty ignorant regarding anything since about the 80s, ragga/dancehall was never my thing and I only play modern stuff (although I have liked contemporary West African reggae)
Priti priti priti Patel
1 hour ago, BillyAnchor said: If anyone has modern reggae to share I would listen. I am pretty ignorant regarding anything since about the 80s, ragga/dancehall was never my thing and I only play modern stuff (although I have liked contemporary West African reggae) From the artists I have listed in my first post above (all Jamaica-based and producing conscious roots), the following offers a good introduction: Chronixx - burst onto the scene and immediately crossed over to mainstream radio play with the following track in 2013. My friend and former colleague's step son is his overseas tour manager and I saw him at a sold out Ally Pally in November 2018. A soft-spoken and spiritually devout rasta, when he's in the UK tends to hang out with relatives in south London and he opened a pop-up shop in Brixton on his last tour unannounced. Kabaka Pyramid - also gained widespread popularity in 2013 although hasn't crossed into mainstream. One of my favourites and one of his earliest hits was this: What you see above is that Chronixx came to the scene with a more tense, confrontational sound while Kabaka's was more relaxed and melodious. In their most recent albums, that has swapped around. Chronixx has adopted a more acoustic, melodious sound (see, e.g. his song Legend) while Kabaka has become more militant (see, e.g. Kontraband ft. Damian Marley). Protoje - at 38 he is significantly older than the above artists, but took time to find popularity. Initially a hip hop artist, he signed with a reggae label (Don Corleon) in 2011 and has been banging since then. I don't personally listen to Protoje as much as others listed here partly because his patois is much thicker and harder to understand for me as a non-native. For that reason, I have fewer songs I want to recommend, but an early banger which you may recognise from Grand Theft Auto is this: Jah9 - an earthy rasta woman who sings reggae and teaches yoga. What's not to love? Well for me it's the sheer jazziness of her music. That's not to my taste personally and I have twice had tickets to see Jah9 and decided to do other things, but there's no denying she's at the forefront of the scene. Her songs are always packed with meaningful lyrics as typified by her break out hit New Name, but my favourite is Heaven which I've provided below. I recently had to translate the lyrics from Patois to English for my gf, so to assist, lyrics here. Alborosie - a white Italian from Sicily who moved to Jamaica in 2001 and a practising rasta who has been accepted by the various mansions of Rastafari. Has been active since the mid-2000s. Drew acclaim in 2018 and 2019 for some aurally huge productions drawing on his background as an accomplished dub producer. Headlined at Summerjam (see above) in 2019 and I fondly remember the crowd singing along to this early hit: Koffee - gained mainstream radio play aged 17 with the following track which I find just sweeps me away each time I listen: So those are a few sample tracks from some of the artists at the forefront of the modern roots reggae revival. At the moment my favourite sub-genre of modern reggae is in fact "Cali Reggae", although it is a slightly guilty pleasure, as it feels like a watered down version of roots... performed almost universally by white Americans and heavily influenced by easy listening indie rock. Happy to share some of that when the time comes as well. Edited January 6, 2020 by Margaret Thatcher

My best mate got himself banned from that pub(for being a stupid c**t) so we haven't seen them as much as we did, but I've seen some videos of the antics they got up to and it looked like a great laugh.

Loads of old Skinhead/Reggae stuff, some Soul and a few Mod stuff. Dunno what it is about that place but the markets seem to have loads of great buys. For example i looked at a Who album, double quodrophenia album with booklet inside in Edinburgh when at the fringe, It was £40. At Brick Lane the same album was £15. Only difference was a small note inside saying to my darling Steve, happy birthday in 1974. I'm not called Steve but I was still having that I sold that 1973 double Quadrophenia with booklet on ebay nearly 10 years ago for £30. It was NM- quality.
