TV/Radio Rights-Rangers and the BBC

Recommended Posts

There was mention on Sportsound tonight about Rangers continuing to ban the BBC from Ibrox. Can someone explain what happens to Rangers allocation of BBC tv Rights etc? Is this withheld and allocated amongst the remaining 39 member Clubs? if not-why not?

Then Sportsound is talking shite.  There is no ban of the BBC in general or any BBC member of staff from Ibrox. Maybe you'd better address your question to our national broadcaster.

Is there anyone left at Ibrox who was there when this all kicked off?

This was originally about the so called lies in that documentary about Craig Whyte, no?

It seems pointless this is still going on what ever this is, no one seems to remember who's boycotting who?

We know very well that it's The BBC who are doing the boycotting and we know it's because we won't issue one of their reporters with a press pass/free ticker/half time cup of tea.  Note, too, we're not banning anyone from Ibrox.

Is it really a boycott? Has the BBC ever confirmed this in any form?

edit Got it - Chris McLaughlin was banned from Ibrox for his so called bias view of Rangers, for example focusing on the arrest of Rangers fans during and after a 6-2 win vs Hibs. This was viewed as a continuing campaign of bias against the club by the BBC. The BBC boycotted in retaliation of this unjustifiable action taken by the club.

But not the former. So not allowing them to do part of their job then?

I don't know so didn't answer.  I'd make the assumption he's welcome at Ibrox (ie not banned) but not welcome in areas usually reserved for the press.

It is, of course, all rather petty but isn't what was reported in the OP.

Vicky and the alky obviously have the P&B equivalent of a Google alert set up for 'BBC banned from Ibrox' as every single time it's mentioned at least one of them quickly appears stamping their feet and blubbing 'They're not, they're not, they're not' in true blue bigot 'deny everything' mode.

So it's only one bbc man that is banned from reporting from Ibrox and the bbc is backing their man and sending no one in his place?

Exactly. The BBC are quite right to not let Sevco dictate who they can and can't send to games.

I felt exactly the same when Dundee refused to issue a press pass to Jim Spence (although thankfully that was swiftly resolved).

He is not banned.

If sky or bt sports wished to boycott a club then that's up to them but as a publicly funded body the BBC has a responsibility to cover games.

If the BBC were to apply for an Ibrox press pass for Chris McLaughlin, would he be issued with one? Yes or no.
