This thread started off well but is now full of facts and reasonable debate. Very sad.

You okay? You've gone a bit Donald Trump. Sad.

A bit of love for Rasputin here? Perhaps his influence helped accelerate the Romanov's fall? If not then he's at least an inspiration to many P&Bers with an aversion to washing being no barrier to sexual success.

That's a shame as it sounds like the world of academia has lost a potential intellectual powerhouse.

Rasputin was a wizard. Of that I have no doubt. Unfortunately he's sorta lost in the muddle of legends roaming the streets of Petrograd in the 1910s.

Just saying.....

Off on a tangent, but I was at a humanist service recently and it seemed quite a good idea, humanism. Is there more to it than just generally “be a gid c**t, not an arsehole”? I appreciate your point too many people are arseholes for it to really be the way of the world but from what the snapshot I heard it seemed the right idea.

Right, but that's a self selective group of hippie weirdos. It takes eternal damnation with your religion to scare most of the assholes and keep them in line.

They reserved scrambling for the swarthy peasants. Well, starved or murdered because they didn't realise that Marx had predicted they wouldn't exist as they should have evolved into the proletariat.

Marx advocated that they be exterminated like the former ruling classes but for the reason that they would "too backward" to educated.

Scottish Highlanders were amongst this group in his list "come the Revolution"

Hippy weirdos, how? I don’t know much about humanism but it just seemed like folk being nice? This religion and eternal damnation caper doesn’t seem to be working. Not sure if you’re up to date on current events, but things are fairly shite.

Right. Because people stopped being scared of what would happen to their eternal soul after they die.

Or people are committing atrocities “in the name of their religion”. I’ve put that in quotes because I’m not convinced it’s actually true.
Or to take agree with your point, if folk are no longer afraid of jeebus or that, if they were humanist then they’d just live a life of being sound? I’m now staunchly (big team found) defending/advocating humanism knowing pretty much f**k all about it?! This place, man.

I was more aping off the point about socialism not working because humans are shits. I doubt a purely positive religion can keep the crap humans in line the same way a negative religion can.

But the negative ones aren’t, or in fact are encouraging idiots to idiot? I doubt it as well, but I don’t think that makes humanists “hippy weirdos” for thinking it’s a better idea.

I tend to think the ideal religion for a society tells you to behave, but also teaches negative consequences. Christianity, for example. Maybe we'd have less mass shootings if a higher % of our population was scared of hell as a consequence for murdering innocent people. Maybe I'm way off base. Just a thought.

But hell’s no real (imo) and I haven’t committed any atrocities? I don’t not kill folk because I’m scared of hell or the devil or any that, I don’t do it because I know it’s wrong. I think teaching right and wrong are more important than instilling fear.
That’s also open to manipulation as I think the world is showing - “I’m going to kill them because they believe in a different religion”.

Sounds a bit like Islam to be fair.
