Bolshevik Revolution Centenary

Socialism would be great if humans were full of peace, love and kindness.
We're not. We're a bunch of greedy arseholes.
This is also the reason that humanism is utter dog shite.

Off on a tangent, but I was at a humanist service recently and it seemed quite a good idea, humanism. Is there more to it than just generally “be a gid c**t, not an arsehole”? I appreciate your point too many people are arseholes for it to really be the way of the world but from what the snapshot I heard it seemed the right idea.

Why do you think Lenin spent years ordering the deaths of thousands of kulaks and aristocrats? The royal family weren't killed out of any personal enmity on Lenin's behalf it was just necessary for the revolution.

Saying this is like saying WW1 led to Hitler: it was far more complex than that. I think it was clear that Lenin opposed Stalin and the direction in which he wanted to take the Party, nd I'd argue that history has validated Lenin's misgivings.

Boo complexity! How do you like this?

King George raises taxes on colonists ---> Yanks get stroppy.  American revolution.  ---> France bankrolls Americans, goes bust ---> French revolution. French monarchy tries to escape, captured and executed --> Austria not happy one of their royals (Marie Antoinette) got her head chopped off.  First of a series of wars between German world and France --->  France changes warfare forever with its huge new revolutionary army.  Napoleonic Wars ---> Post Napoleonic war carve up of  Europe between great powers ---> French/Germans just won't let it lie.   Franco-Prussian war --->  First world war.  Russian defeats in First world war leads to Russian revolution ---> Versaille treaty, French/Germans at it again ---> Second world war. Germany destroyed by Communists they helped to create ---> Russians step in as new baddies.  Cold war ---> Communism collapses End of History ---> Post End of History shite hole we are in now.

Basically everything in world  history happened because a mad German king put up VAT on Reeses Peanut Cups and Dodge pickup trucks.

Socialists are full of peace, love and kindness. We just need to murder all the capitalists first.

You can't make an omelette etc etc

Maybe the UK and other imperialist powers shouldn't have been sending troops and support to the White Russians and left the top lads to get on with the settled will of the Russian people.

Fascinating fact the war memorial in Kinnell church near Arbroath is marked 1914-1919 as there was a local man killed as part of a British regiment sent to fight for the counter revolutionaries.

That's WWI that lasted 1914-19 you're talking about? Their was an armistice in 1918 but the war didn't end until the Treaty of Versailles in June 1919 which is why many monuments say 1914-19

Well he still died in Russia and that's the main take away from this story.

There was me just thinking 'new broom'. New guy knocks off any of the old lot that could rally an opposition 'shocka' stuff. Dressed up in a noble cause of course, but still an angry killing spree to cement their new power.

Right but the context of it was the complete removal of the dynasty that had held power for 300 years meant the Whites lost one of their main rallying points. Helen Rappaport's Ekaterinburg is a good book on this. Takes lots of liberties with the story but I think it makes it a better read personally.

I'm sticking with killing the opposition and no moral highground, just cementing power because they feel they can. Its historically what has happened and I can't see this being any different, its not like there was a grudging respect for the Romanov's.  Academic now anyway.

That's a shame as it sounds like the world of academia has lost a potential intellectual powerhouse.

This thread started off well but is now full of facts and reasonable debate. Very sad.

Answer the questions I've posed in the original question starting with: Trotsky or Stalin? I feel Stalin is more generically handsome but there's something about young Trotsky that's underappreciated.

Omelettes are for pussies.

They reserved scrambling for the swarthy peasants. Well, starved or murdered because they didn't realise that Marx had predicted they wouldn't exist as they should have evolved into the proletariat.
