Now is The Season of Our Discontent

Recommended Posts

Early days in the Premiership, but there are a fair few disgruntled sets of fans about the Premiership forum just now.  The traditional, often misplaced, early-season optimism has never been less apparent. A thread dedicated to the most dissatisfied.

Post your weekly table of contenders for the title and reasons for nomination.

Right now:

1. Kilmarnock - after finishing 3rd and having high ambitions for the future, lost a manager and a couple of key players, replaced by an extra from 'allo 'allo (the Italian remake) and nobody.

2. St Johnstone - Traditional European giants who are forging ahead with the policy of running with a small tight knit squad of quality, rather than quantity...  If quality means losing 4 first team players, and replacing them with a reserve right back and 2 reserve goalkeepers. And a ginormous Estonian who'd never previously played football before his visit to Scotland, but is enjoying his stay nonetheless.

3. Hibs - surprise entry to the league, especially after Heckingbottom led Hibs on a run to 5th last season. But dissatisfaction at the summer's transfer activity, mostly involving signing English lower league jobbers ("ooooh lower league jobbers" say killie and Saints fans jealously), a weak midfield, and a pumping by rangers are turning the Hibs fans slowly against Heckingbottom.

4. Aberdeen - Defeat from st Mirren and a bit of a meek exit in Europe are making it a tough week for Dons fans.  Another couple of poor results in the next few weeks might turn up the angst among their support. A few murmurs about how Derek has taken them as far as he can and it might be near the end of his time. Most of us on the outside are left thinking 'careful what you wish for'.

5. Hearts - the spoilt brat of the league, who should just be grateful they have a club to follow. Going massively into debt again, being saved by St Johnstone fans, then ignoring all the folk they owed money to and instead spending £14m they don't have on a new stand, regularly signing decent players every close season, topping the league at times and reaching cup semi finals. They'll probably be top 5 again, and yet still they moan and shout for the manager to be replaced as if they should be entitled to more.  The football club personification of the entitled generation.

6. Celtic - That bit on the old corkscrew roller coaster at alton towers where it slowly and ominously goes up and up at a steep angle for ages until it reaches a bit where its sort of poised and hangs there, and you're not sure it's got the momentum to clear the crest of the incline and go surging forward onto great things, or will go hurtling backwards, crashing to the ground in a pile of twisted metal, legs and heads rolling around all over the place.  That's where Celtic are at right now. A bad result or two domestically, Lennon to implode and lose the plot with his players, the media, other managers and referees. The Celtic fan's banners to get less political and more annoyed at the club itself. With Rangers looking like they might put up a bit of a challenge, the Celtic fans have had it their own way for so long that many of the teenage brigade, unlike the political heroes they pretend to idolise, might not be able to cope with the struggle (being second).

7. Motherwell - Early season optimism was high. Chic Young tipped them for "top 3" !!  Who knew that signing loads of unknown players from other leagues might be a gamble?  You always feel Robinson will be able to get them battling to safety, and Motherwell players don't turn up for work until January anyway, but the optimism derived from swording diddies in the league cup group stage appears to have evaporated following the three matches against other Premiership sides.

The Inbetweeners

Hamilton Accies - as always will vary greatly with great results interspersed with howling performances. Will battle to safety and, like destitute families of refugees from war torn Syria who end up in Dundee, will reflect on their life in big league bottom six limbo with "is this as good as it gets? We were promised so much more"

The Happy Clappers

Ross County - mid table security beckons

Livingston - probably don't care that someone shat in their jacket pocket, they're just happy to be at a party they don't really belong at.

St Mirren - things looking up with the right man in charge

Rangers - sign enough players and eventually you should be able to cobble together a decent starting eleven

Tough euro games and challenging domestically requires a capable squad, it's why we toiled for spells last season.

I liked the bit you wrote about Hibs

Maybe not MJC. It’s comforting to see fans of Motherwell, Kilmarnock, Hibs, Hearts moaning. Maybe we’re not so bad. Probably, as one St Mirren fan said, there’ll be less between teams from 3rd-12th this season.

I need a lie down. A moaning faced fcukers thread, and we’re not early season title contenders? What’s wrong with the world?

A mere three weeks ago some of our support had us facing financial Armageddon,we had no decent players and we were as good as relegated.

To be fair, the League Cup group stage results and performances, allied to a squad needing an influx of at least five or six players, an under-performing captain, and rumours of a Carrier Bag bid for Hladky didn’t exactly paint a rosy picture for the season ahead. Hopefully, Goodwin’s mantra of ‘more signings, less loanees’, means that he brings that much needed stability to the club, and next close season, we aren’t a total basket case club.... again.

To be fair... f**k all. It was the usual suspects exhibiting impatient knickerwetting in the extreme, when there was still more than a month left of the transfer window and we had still to make the majority of our signings.

To be fair I was one who was banging on about a poor budget. Goodwin has done remarkably well with players brought In. Still sure a lot of the revolving door has used up all of the money brought in by transfers. If we have a good season that will take a back seat when the accounts are published.  But not by Lord P.
