According to a very reliable source of information which we now call the internet, St.Mirren was the first team in the world to adopt black and white stripes as a kit design.
Self evidently, we are not including teams who may have cut about a bit in the 1870s/1880s but are now forgotten.

I don't think there were many, if any any clubs in the 1870s or 80s who wore vertical stripes at all regardless of colour. Most football shirts back then were horizontal or plain.

first vertical striped shirts

Stoke 1883

Wolves 1883

Burnley 1884

St Mirren 1884

If you want longevity in a strip design

Queenspark - small horizontal black white hoops - 1873

Blackburn Rovers - half vertical panels (slight differing shades of blue though) -1878

Good bit of info with regards to vertical stripes.

Just looking there, Nottingham Forest appear to be winners in that group. They've gone with plain red shirts and white shorts/trousers since 1868.

Did Cefyn Druids the oldest club in Wales not play in black and white stripes when they formed in 1872, five years before St Mirren were founded?

Cefn Druids, in the current format, were formed in 1992 after a merger between Cefn AFC and Druids United. Druids United were the result of at least one merger before that (maybe more) but can trace their lineage all the way back to Druids FC. Druids, I think, usually wore plain white tops and black shorts but no idea if they started with stripes or not.

Fair point. Interesting history and very much like Triggers Broom it would seem.
