A reminder of how we were playing for decades until Clarke came in; never go for it and claim we were unfortunate when we inevitably fail to qualify. The performance has gotten worse as the game as gone on yet waited far too long to make the changes required.

Clarke's tactics have so far worked in a format that rewards draws after McLeish qualified for the playoffs.

Wait until tomorrow night when he needs to win in 90 minutes to proclaim that he has turned it around tactically. He couldn't beat Israel at Hampden. For all the abuse McLeish got beating Albania 4 nil away was a tremendous result.

Clarke is about to f**k our Nations League group.

We were defensively effective in October and September. Our best performances in years have been these last two games. Let’s not overstate the case the other way either.

The Czechs were fucked with Covid in both games and Slovakia didn't try a leg at Hampden.

Clarke is definitely the man for a playoff but a group is a different proposition.

I've watched most u21 games this campaign and have been impressed with maybe half an hour of football.

It's not new. I've watched our home U21 ties in Edinburgh for several years but whether Sbragia or Gemmell we've generally been poor.

Beaten by Macedonia, huffed-n-puffed by Andorra, comfortably dispatched by England, held 0-0 by Lithuania, beaten by 10-man Greece are those I recall.

Given our results against the Croats and Czechs it's criminal that we didn't finish top 2. Greece at home we got beat by ten men and Lithuania at home was absolutely hopeless.

It definitely felt like a strong pool of players but the guys who might have provided a bit of spark such as Turnbull, Gilmour,  Mikey Johnston and Scott didn't play much due to injuries and Gemmell's unbelievably negative tactics. Patrick Reading at left wing was a low point and Alan Campbell supporting the striker in every game summed us up. A midfield of McCrorie holding, Turnbull as a 10 and either Campbell or Ferguson as 8 has great balance and we never saw it.

You look at the bench today and we have two goalies, five defenders and two midfielders. How the f**k is that even possible? Surely there is another striker available? Oli Shaw has scored a few goals recently to start with.

It’s the same story every campaign. Our u21s are poorly managed and under perform against similar nations.

How we create any senior players is beyond me given the level we compete at u21.

Which is all the stranger given at u17 and u19 we consistently over achieve.

Yes, Clarke has shown no evidence of being able to perform in a league-based setting.

1.77 points per match with Killie.

Exactly the same as Gemmell in this group. Not enough to qualify top 2 in any Euro 2020 group.

1.79 points per game, but that's obviously splitting hairs. He didn't get to play against San Marino with Killie. He also took over at a club which had earned 1.01 points per game in the four and a bit years since Kenny Shiels had left.

In his entire time in charge, he lost exactly one match to a bottom six club, and he has continued that into the international arena - Sunday's game against Slovakia was the first game Clarke has lost against a nation of a similar stature. He also regularly gave bloody noses to teams much better than us, which seems like the ideal trait for a Scotland manager. He has us top of a group which were 3rd seeds in.

There are plenty of diddies in the Premiership.

He has us there but with a fair bit of luck with the Czech Covid cases. Tomorrow will show us if he can win a vital match in 90 minutes.
