Don Diego De la Vega
looking for a easter break and have quite fancied Mallorca for a while, inspired mostly by an episode of Rick stein and a squid "paella" dish and a pretty awful weekday crime series on bbc. the old part of Palma looks beautiful and reminds me of the gothic quarter of Barcelona any recommendations? Palma or other destinations? we would have our 5 year old son with us too
Barney Rubble
Soller (NW Mallorca) is the place to go if you want authentic as opposed to touristy. Palma itself is lovely, especially the old town. Edited November 29, 2021 by Barney Rubble

Palma is a cracking city.

Would much rather have authentic rather touristy, not really in need of a beach holiday just a chill out time, good food and relaxation

Hawk89
Would third Soller and Peurto Soller (note they are two place sitting one above the other). Iirc they are connected by a tram? We visited back in 2013 and absolutely loved the island, you can basically have any type of holiday you want and it is incredibly well setup for tourists. Would absolutely recommend renting a car for atleast a day or two as there are so many places to go and see, you are quite right about Palma being a really beautiful city. The only thing to watch out for on the side roads is mass gangs of cyclists, can really be a pain especially up in the hills as the roads are pretty twisty. We stayed in Santa Ponsa, away from the centre at what was a Thomas Cook hotel (Sentido Punta Del Mar). Santa Ponsa is one of the tourist traps on the island, however the views out over the Med from the headland were beautiful. We have only really explored the SW of the island and have plans to based ourselves over in the east next time we go.
welshbairn
The train from Palma to Soller is worth the ride. I went on a hill walk from there in May, beautiful weather, shorts and t-shirt, and flip flops I think. Weather turned and I ended up snowed in in a mountain refuge hut with a bunch of Germans equipped for an Arctic expedition. Very embarrassing. After an hour or so I suggested we sent one of the women down for supplies. They tutted. Then the weather cleared and all was well. The train journey from Soller to Palma takes about an hour and goes through some cracking countryside. Palma is well worth a visit.
