Wonder if a perception that Vlad backed the Reichsburger coup nutters in some way resulted in a U-turn on this because the Germans have definitely not been keen on the optics of having their panzers on the Dniepr or Donetsk rivers again.
The Other Foot
That’s a fecking appalling deal for yon Nicholas Cage character. US citizen leaves hellhole country to return to USA. Russian citizen leaves hellhole in USA to return to hellhole country.

An underplayed aspect of the Russian character is the impact on their collective “memory” of any number of invading armies trucking back and forth through the Motherland. It doesn’t justify their actions, but it makes it a little easier to understand the blind spots they have. A pretty significant number of the German POW’s that were “detained” for up to 10 years after WW2 were actually held in a manner that resulted in their being reported as dead before magically reappearing upon repatriation from years of labour for the Soviets rebuilding Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, the Baltics, etc. That was something the Germans certainly remember, and after this latest reminder of a Russian character with the use of NordStream to try to blackmail them, will likely be top of mind when opportunities like this… 7 hours ago, LongTimeLurker said: …come up. I hope they are transferring 2A5 or 2A6 versions, as the older 2A4 has proven vulnerable to turret hits in Turkish service in Syria. Regardless, these will fit in well with Ukraine’s mobile tactics in the North of occupied Ukraine.

LongTimeLurker
Ukrainians gain some ground again: this place was said to be quite strategic and the key to further advances east. We'll see if the end of the mud season in that part of the world is significant.

Note all the waterways and small bodies of water east of this location…they are now all freezing solid, and will soon be passable 24/7. The question is did the Russians prepare their defensive lines with that in mind…or will the Ukrainians burst out into the Russian rear echelons again? Given this area is now mostly held by militia units, it could be ugly if the line breaks.

Federal penalties don’t allow good time credit, but do account for time in jail awaiting trial, etc. Not a terrible deal as a 1-for-1, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the ex-Marine Paul Whelan gets something out of this (sentence reduction or such), but separated by time to allow the Russians deniability. Russia demanded the release of an FSB assassin doing life in Germany for killing a Georgian in Berlin. Locals saw him throwing a wig, bicycle and gun into a river just after the murder and told nearby police who arrested him.

Not sure the Russians have the chips, after this gas fiasco, to free someone in a German prison. Guess they need to move to someone else.

ICTChris
Some of the videos of that Melitopol strike are gruesome. Seems like there were a lot of Russian soldiers in very close proximity.
