Because dead people were racist. It happened. Lots of horrible things have happened in history. Knowing this, reading about it and learning about it doesn't mean it's accepted. I'm sure publishers do have the right to edit works they own. The characters are not real people. completely fake. James Bond did not exist, never had those opinions and hasn't been censored no one is changing history. you can still buy the original work, when it goes out of copyright the original will be free for everyone to read and access. It was acceptable to produce the original copies at the time and make a profit off it. It isn't acceptable to print NEW copies with racist shit in it and make money off it. Publishers absolutely have the right to change anything they want because they own it. The author sold it to them.
