ICTChris
1 - Heat. The granddaddy of them all, Heat features several brilliant robbery scenes but the main bank robbery and shoot out sets the standard for the genre. Filmed entirely on location and with training by ex-SAS soldiers the scene is so realistic it has allegedly been used as the basis for a number of real life bank robberies, including the infamous North Hollywood shoot out. 2 - The Last Panthers. A series based on the infamous Serb jewel thief gang starts with a high end robbery at a French jeweller, the crew not speaking and posing as painter and decorators to gain entry. The actual Pink Panthers used similar ruses in their real life crimes, including wearing outlandish disguises and painting benches near targets to deter witnesses. 3 - Dog Day Afternoon. Both the above have portrayed extremely professional and clinic robbery gangs, this example portrays the opposite. Just a brilliant film with an amazing cast and story. The robbery is the basis of the film but the opening scene sums it up brilliantly. 4 - Inside Man. A Spike Lee film detailing an absurdly complicated plot to steal a diamond with a whole lot more going on besides, this film seems underrated to me. The robbery develops in a very unexpected way leading up to the climax. 5 - The Place Beyond the Pines. Unpike most of the films above TPBtP focuses on the impact through the generations of crime and how an act of violence affects those not even born when it occurs. The robbery scenes are pretty raw, reflecting the down at heel nature of the criminals. My favourite scene is when Ryan Gosling and Ben Mendelssohn celebrate a successful robbery by dancing in a dilapidated trailer with their chihuahua to Dancing in the Dark.

tongue_tied_danny
Do burglaries count for this thread? If so, then Le Cercle Rouge has the coolest scene of breaking and entering ever filmed IMO.
