I read Misha Glenny's harrowing work "The fall of Yugoslavia" so my understanding is slightly less limited but for a 15 word summary you weren't far off

Glenny was the BBC correspondent on the ground at the time and saw a lot of history first hand and interviewed a lot of people that were dead not long after.

I can recommend his book but it is a bit confusing especially because many of  the place names don't have quite enough vowels to look like real words 

And it's short on laughs
