I think it was more to do with things like the Lost, Coronation Street, Movie, Book etc. threads so that people could post spoilers and those that wanted to read them, could, and those that didn't, didn't have to. It just saved *SPOILER ALERT* posts and people having to scroll down with their eyes shut and risk seeing anything they didn't want to.
