  3. The issue is that sweatshops and factories are good enough that they can bootleg most practical clothes (i.e. anything other than the outlandish dresses you get at fashion shows and big Hollywood soirees) to a reasonable degree that nobody who isn't an expert would notice. Whereas two hundred years ago, rich people could distinguish themselves by the craftsmanship quality of their bespoke clothing, that's less practical for the post-industrial mass-manufactured age. So if you are a big-name brand, you have to distinguish yourself by actually slapping your brand logo on the clothing so people know it's yours and not someone elses (because it's easier for the law to clobber forged trademarks than it is to go through the fuzzy process of deciding what is and isn't copyright infringement in clothing). A designer label on a cheap T-shirt is as good for product-distinction purposes as a designer label on a fancier piece of clothing. Expensive words on a cheap T-shirt is what you need to impress status-obsessed idiots. There is some sort of logic to it. Of course, we should have a society without said status-obsessed idiots, but that's pretty hard to engineer.
  4. A little offtopic, but that is reminiscent of Dunfermline's very own Party Cannon, who are a fairly standard death metal troupe with a fairly nonstandard death metal monicker. Here's how well they fit-in on their posters:
  5. At least 10 people did the same, presumably influenced by him deciding he wasn't so dying after all and discharging himself from his hospice.

  8. I did query that, and they replied in the affirmative, followed by a couple of results posted this week.
  9. Daniel Dennett, philosopher and the least-well-known and least-OFTWish of the big four 'new atheists', has had his consciousness expired.
  10. I think this is the latest post where the rules were explained, but I could be wrong. Not sure if it's fully up to date, but the basic gist is that every few months, people sign up to play two (or occasionally just one) 'daily games' on chess.com per week in a double round robin league with two divisions (using the football scoring systems of 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw and promotion/relegation, and people play each other once as white, once as black). Daily games are where you play a minimum of one move per day. All PnBers are welcome. @ancientnoise deals with the cup these days, which is a parallel FA-Cup style knockout tournament. We're about halfway through the season right now, but if this is the sort of thing you're interested in, I can pencil you in for next season right now. At the end of this season, I'll do a callup for next season, and again, you'd be more than welcome to join in.
  11. I picked Higgs on my first go here, before I realised that ill people die faster than old people. And nobody told me Peter Higgs was ill.

  14. On the bright side, it does mean we aren't forced to cheer on Rangers against Dundee.
  15. This sounds like an exploitable loophole. When you need to hook another one of your own players, send your assistant manager out with a lead piping to cosh a member of the opposition. Costs your non-playing staff a red card for violent conduct, but you gain an extra sub, and take out their best player.
