Goodwin was a good manager for us. He also put Aberdeen in their place a couple of times.

He certainly improved us but should have achieved top 6 and the semi final defeats were poor. Signings were good but I thought he was a little stubborn, like the awful run before the winter break when the fans could see the issues with the shape before he finally chucked 5-3-2 and went on the run of 4 wins and a draw that got him the Aberdeen job! I thought he was a bit fortunate to get the job and said he would need luck but was accused of sour grapes 😂

I don’t watch enough of Aberdeen, so not best placed to comment, but from what I see they seem to have decent enough players but just lack something overall to get it working as a team. I can see why they don’t think Robson is the right man however the results at the end of last year made it hard to ignore him. The County game is a big one for his future.

Anyway on the game, pleased to win today but missing the first penalty was frustrating as that would have made things easier. Feel for O’Hara he’s just not at last seasons level despite the goal. Perhaps the break will come at a good time for him. Just looking at it, I feel we got a couple of breaks today we just didn’t get in some of the last few games. 7 points from last 5 of County, Killie, Motherwell at home and Aberdeen and Hearts away isn’t the best but isn’t awful.

  2. Honking game. Second half we seemed surprised to understand the wind was strong... How many times did Hemming or others just boot it straight out for a goal kick. To be fair his saves were excellent. Disappointed not to score after missing the penalty, relieved to get a draw after the chances Motherwell had.

No idea what our defensive line was about 2nd half or the subs. Small for McMenamin, because that's worked well before... Kiltie who I thought was playing well for Greive which didn't seem to work. Not sure that game was one for Mandron either. O'Hara is definitely struggling for form in the last few games and had a poor one today even excluding the penalty miss. Baccus was good for us and got the ball down well though he fell out of it when the subs changed the shape.

Clearly a missed opportunity for Motherwell, no other team (well apart from us) would spurn so many chances at the end. Biereth is a good player even if he was isolated for long spells. I'm not sure how effective the high press was, they were much better sitting deep and countering. Slattery must have been playing on sheet ice to be rolling on the ground that often 🤣

    Mental!

Hay is derided roundly by us and with good reason. He probably had better resources to play with than any St. Mirren gaffer ever and turned in a horrific performance to point that it ended his career for nearly a decade before coming back and doing well at Livi.

Seeing his record there is crazy- no manager would last the season now with those stats

Don't think his numbers have ever been great at any point, and he has more appearances to his name on the treatment table than he has in the 'goals for' column.

He had 8 league goals in about 26 starts in the Covid season and was probably on for a couple more if it had run to conclusion, but only 5 for the next season. When he left a few fans were unsure but think that is because Main (and Brophy to an extent) struggled under Goodwin.

Biereth looks to be a cracking player - particularly cause it seems like he's playing injured right now.

  5. Wasn't the best game. Felt we shaded it in the end and unfortunate to have a goal ruled out to seal it earlier. Not a game anyone will look back on in the future.

Livi really didn't do much bar lump it up top and hope it stuck. Not sure what their line up was doing. Nouble as a wingback? Anderson was dominated by Gogic and Taylor who were great.

West Stand Lino clearly doesn't know it was whole ball over the line too....

  6. So I can see the sense in this for Glasgow. Horne is clearly becoming Glasgow's first choice and Dobie needs to develop too. Frees up cash for a 10 which apparently Glasgow are looking for.

I don't know how it helps Edinburgh - Vellacott is captain, they have Shiel and Steele coming back. Presumably something has to give there?

  7. The fact that viewers are way up will be why they keep sprint racing. Something needs to change about them though.

I think part of the dullness at the moment it Verstappen has no competition. If we were seeing a tight battle (like Verstappen v Hamilton) these races would be decent and I'd bother to get up and watch.

As an opposition fan, Youan is such an annoying player to play against. Every first touch comes off his shin or his ankle, as if he's never seen a football before and he's given possession away, but he somehow still always comes away with the ball. He just has that knack of every touch he takes, no matter how bad it looks, works for him.

Well apart from in 90+2 mins when he did give it away with a terrible touch that lead to the goal.

Hibs seemed to set up well, very fast high press and a spreading it wide to drag our 3 around with Jair / Youan fairly high on both sides to pin back Tanser and Strain. I felt Hibs didn't really create all that much for all their good play - the two goals are well taken but come from Gogic miscontrolling it and and Taylor rushing out and getting turned. Also thought it was very strange that when Hibs went ahead, they sort of shut up shop instead of keeping the pressure on, which helped us get a foothold back into the game.

I thought we were pretty poor until the changes late on, but the fact the side kept going and got a point out of it late on, makes it feel a good result. If you have a poor day and still get a point out of it...

For Glasgow I think the psychological boost of beating even a diminished Leinster team is a great way to start the season. Jordan was fine but I do worry about him sometimes, very decent depth most of the rest of the park. When is McKay due to be SQ?

Really don't see it in Tom Jordan at the pro level. He's a good player, but against Leinster I thought his kicking was poor which put Glasgow under a little bit more scoreboard pressure. You saw them kick to touch (with a rookie hooker) rather than take 3 points. Horne came on and went to kicking duties.

I also felt he didn't get much distance or was too safe in going for touch. When Weir came on he kicked one deep in 22 putting Leinster under more pressure, whereas we'd previously been getting limited distance from hand with Jordan.

Do video referees in rugby have a higher status than VAR in football? Compare the faffing about with the disallowed Scotland goal to Barnes being told "I'm going to show you the deliberate knock-on." Surely the referees judgement is final?

It is referees call is final. It has changed over the years- TMO is more involved and also with the advent of big screens referees now do reviewing themselves.

Barnes had already called the deliberate knock on, the TMO just wanted to show him cover situation for a yellow.

Someone needs to stop drinking, put the phone down and go to bed.

Ireland were reffed fairly tonight instead of given benefit of the doubt because they are favourites. They still got 1/4 of the game a man up and a penalty try. They can't complain.

Mind you Ireland fans are always on about #rugbyvalues and calling out others but tonight were booing and jeering kicks tonight.

How are taxi drivers, people that drive for a living, hands down the worst c***s on the road, added points for private hire cars.

It's a job that incentivises time saved to make more money. It's the same with couriers/ Uber Eats/Deliveroo etc.

Fair enough but they've been pumping us for 20+ years. Surely it hasn't always been down to they just have a better  system etc. However as the years have passed the gap is increasing. It's a shame because Scotland has potential to compete with these nations.

I mean in the late 80s to 00s Ireland was almost a gimme for Scotland. Then in 1995 the SRU (and Scottish Rugby generally) made a mess of professionalising the game, where as Ireland, England and others had a strategy and worked towards it.

As the money came into the game, we were arguing amongst each other - the 'gang of four' etc, people wanting the English style system behind clubs, worries about superclubs, people not wanting the districts in Europe. It was a shambles, set is us back years. The first Heineken Cup was without Scottish teams such was the discontent and in the second the 3 districts got bodied and everyone realised it was an issue.

The right call was made in terms of the districts (arguably there should still be 4 to get more Scots playing) but there needs to be far better player pathways, youth development and bringing in state schools as well as private teams.

The super 6 is a waste of cash IMO, put the money to another pro team and youth development.

Maybe I'm just trying too hard to find a reason why we are on the whole just not as good as our Celtic brothers Ireland and Wales and haven't been for 20+ years.

Ireland's system is miles ahead of ours in set up and facilities. The IRFU have so many rugby players they don't know what to do with them. Success breeds success and people want to play rugby over other sports now. The schools are churning out players from their programmes and the Irish U20s look great. Look at Scotland's U20s in comparison.
