Well with the good news of both Stones and Efe signing until the end of the season we can at least field some kind of reasonable defence although I do fear Bartley might play MacIntyre at left back. If he does surely, he won’t then play Walker in front of him like he did at Hamilton as Morrison will have a field day.

MacIntyre was probably our MOTM against Falkirk in the Palmerston match but was comprehensively ragdolled by Morrison at the Falkirk Stadium.  Gibson's defensive abilities are questionable though, so I'd be tempted to start both provided we play with a back four which also allows Gibson to concentrate on the creative side of his game further up the pitch.  Gibson would give MacIntyre far more protection than Walker too, who doesn't really do defending - at all.

Now that we're all relieved that Efe has extended his contract and will be in the team it's a stick-on that he will have a mare tomorrow and lay a goal or two on a plate for Falkirk.

Keeper Harry Stone's loan extended til end of season which is good but it would be good to get Efe on board again, or at least get an update on the injury situation regarding other players.

Would be good if we see some other players being offered contract extensions too so that we don't end up with yet another summer wondering "will he/won't he sign" situation and another huge rebuilding task.  I'm thinking about Gibson in particular, Mimnaugh and Connelly, and possibly Reilly who, despite my previous misgivings about him, I have to admit has really come back onto his game this season after several in the wilderness of meh.  It would be tragic to lose Gibson for nothing.

At the moment we have 6 players whose contracts run beyond the summer.  Brydon, Cochrane and Church are three players I'd want to be here anyway, not sure how wise it was to hand out 2 year deals to Doherty, McKechnie and Hutchinson though.

It gets asked every now and again. It's possible to do but probably unlikely to happen anytime soon.

You can use Google to search within sites, put

Into the url bar and it will search the site for Dobbie

Many thanks.  Will give that a go in the future.

According to QoS website Ambrose contract expires January 2024, not sure that necessarily means the 1st of the month though.

Going by the news item on the club website* when his signing was announced in July his contract has now expired:

    Welcome - Efe Ambrose

We have today signed Efe Ambrose on a short-term deal. The 34-year-old who was a free agent after leaving Morton joins the squad until the end of the year.

I suppose there's still a chance he may sign another short-term contract before Saturday, indeed he may have already done so or has extended his current one to the end of the season but the club admin / SFA quillpushers are stretching their holidays out for as long as possible meaning the paperwork hasn't been signed off yet.

    * Question for Homer T - is there any prospect of the O/S club news ever being made searchable?  It's actually much easier to find specific news items on the old pre-Beta site!  Think it's been asked on here before but I can't remember the response.

I think they just whip chairs out from underneath one another at lunchtime, then trip each other at the top of the stairs as they leave.

The first couple of days training I believe only involves being locked in a room and forced to watch a constant loop video of their mistakes from the previous game.  After all that sitting, their thigh muscles should be nice and tense, so it's off to the gym to maximise the possibility of pulling a hamstring before being made to have several ice-baths against their will.  Finally, a morning tactics session focused solely on where to stand at throw-ins.

Didn’t think for a minute you’d have the nads to answer ! You’re very quick to names names when suits. When Skyline drifter was getting pelters from all corners no one gave a name. SD quickly disappeared ( doesn’t ADD up ??? )

GOOD LUCK FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON.

Henry's past misdeeds have been well reported and are in the public domain, it's not like I've unearthed some scandal that had been kept under wraps until now.

For what it's worth, I personally know people who are/were connected to your club and I'm sure that they would see my post for what it was - a joke, a wind-up.

What on earth has any of this got to do with SD by the way?

Wouldn't surprise me, any player given the opportunity would look to get away from this manager and the probability of being thrown under the bus!

Me neither.  I think Efe will be aware that he wasn't really on Bartley's radar until Brydon's injury / McClelland's first suspension left him with one centre back, and was pretty much a stopgap panic-signing.

I'm all for managers being critical of players in interviews if they think it is the kick up the arse that they need, but in the car-crash post-Kelty interview Bartley was brutally OTT in his castigation of Ambrose in comparison to other team members.  I seem to recall him being much more lenient with McClelland who was equally culpable in his role in the concession of one of the other goals that day.  If Efe has decided to leave, that is probably the minute his mind was made up that he would see out his contract before seeking pastures new.

Expecting another tough game against queens but I'd take any sort of win. Is Reilly still injured?

    Reilly has't missed a game since mid-October.

Brydon, Church, Cochrane, Mimnaugh and Houston are all out long-term and will definitely miss this one and in all likelihood the following couple of games at least (Brydon likely to return first).

McKay & Connelly missed yesterday's game but but should be okay for Falkirk.  McClelland should come back in after missing yesterday's win through suspension.

The most biased set of highlights you're ever likely to see  Was half expecting them not to show our goals.

Wasn't at the game, so going by the highlights I'm amazed we managed to win the game considering we only seem to have got out of our own half on 3 occasions. 😄

McGuffie's goal - wtf were the Annan defenders trying to do?

Still trying to work out how Aidan Smith managed to pick up such a painful shin injury after being pushed in the chest at around 1.14 in the package - watch it at 0.25 speed and it's even more obvious that there was no foot to leg contact!  I can only assume that a Queens fan sneaked a gun into the stand and fired a round into to the poor wee soul's leg.  So much for the reputation of Sandsiders being hard bast@rds! 🤣

Should say Todd did well at CB. Did some decent tracking back and tackling.

I'm not Ambrose's biggest fan but I think we have to offer him an extension given the state we're in the now.

Marvin needs couple quality additions/ loans in January for us to be getting that top 4 secured.

Haven't seen us since the Dundee United game (including today) due to a combination of illness, bereavement and just not wanting to go through the pain of watching this mob , but if we're now at the stage that Josh Todd is playing centre-back every criticism of Bartley's recruitment and training methods seems justified.  How on earth can that situation arise with a squad of close on 30 players?

With Brydon's injury record, McClelland's lack of discipline and ability to make a hash of the basics of defending, keeping Ambrose has become a no-brainer despite the number of errors he's been racking up recently.

We desperately need another CB in January, but what's worrying is the chances are, going by Bartley's recruitment record, if he signs someone it'll be a 17 year old from Hibs.

  11. Anyone heard any news on how long Cochrane and Brydon are likely to remain out for?  With McClelland racking up the disciplinary points and Efe's contract up after this game it would be great news if Brydon is close to returning.

The daylight robbery game at Galabank was the only time we've kept a clean sheet since the league cup group stage.  Hopefully nobody buys Goss a compass for Christmas and his shooting and heading is as wildly off-target as it was in that game.

Second of the season. Scored in 3-2 home loss to Montrose.

He scored three goals last season too.

I do have to wonder if we would have been closer to/in a play-off position had Bartley not been so reluctant to play him regularly when fit.  If you're good enough you're old enough, as they say (whoever "they" are) and we are certainly carry much more of a threat and get forward quicker when he plays*.

    * as long as he isn't given many defensive responsibilities.

What is the plan? We as fans don't know. It ay be to keep possession even if that means going backwards or square as if opposition don't have the ball then they won't score. Lets say it is and you have to play that way for 98mins, if one player makes a mistake then a goal happens. How many times are they executing the the plan. Players at our level are not good enough to play at 100% all the time (effort yes) but not skilful/technically enough.

One mistake is highlighted when a goal is scored, how many other mistakes are made that don't result in goals? Many and frequently

Thing is, we're not scoring goals at the other end either.  Which can mean one of two things:  either we are playing a system which restricts the number of chances we can create, which in turn adds pressure on the forwards to turn a ridiculously high percentage of chances into goals - something that even Paton couldn't do last season given the number of chances he spurned;  or the nine other clubs have defenders who just don't make mistakes, in which case you have to ask why are their defenders not playing at a higher level?

  14. We've had plenty of time to assess Bartley's summer transfer business now.  I'd rate the signings as follows:

    Good:     Mimnaugh  /  Stone

Meh:      Houston  /  Church*  /  Walker*

    Bad:      Ambrose **  /  Doherty  /  Hutchinson  /  McGuffie  /  Ferguson  /  MacIntyre

Awful:      Logan  /  Raggett***  /  McClelland

    * have shown up well in flashes, but could easily be dropped into the "bad" category given how few and far between these flashes have been

** started off well (well, better than McKay) but has become more and more of a liability as the season progresses

*** never seen him play, but if he's only rated good enough to have appeared on the bench once or twice and never on the pitch he must be honking

14 signings and 9 I'd rate as being bad or worse.  Dare we go into the next window with Bartley still in charge?

  15. Assuming that Bartley is soon to be gone, I would hope that whoever his replacement may be would either have a lot of connections in the game and would insist on the club employing a dedicated scout.

I had expected Bartley's recruitment to be much more varied and better considering his knowledge of the Scottish game and connections I had assumed he had made during his time in the game.  Instead he focussed almost solely on recruiting Hibs fringe/development players (Brydon / Dabrowski / MacIntyre/ Johnson / McClelland) or players that I suspect have been recommended by his brother (Hutchinson / Walker / Raggett).  And that's about it.

I wonder how many of the above were actually watched in person over a number of competitive matches at this level before he signed them?

Reading your posts is confusing. Although you don't, for whatever reason attend all games this season, like the rest of us you are unhappy with how this season is unfolding so far under Bartley. Yet when we last had a title winning side you were bored!

I for one would be happy enough if someone like the locally born guy who now goes by the name of Calvin Harris started showing interest in the club.

Bill Drummond is allegedly a QOS fan.  It's a shame he burnt that £1m in the 90s.  We could have put it to good use - or more likely wasted it.

Your central point about rookies is obviously valid.

Had Skelton not managed Workington though?

think Skelton was "only" assistant manager at Workington, but I may be wrong on that.  I know he had a role as "player/coach" but I'm not sure if that signifies that he was player-manager or a member of the coaching set-up who was also a registered player.

Oh, thanks for thinking of us, jolly decent of you.

The Ramblers game we have in our reserves section, played on Saturday the 14th April, not Thursday 12th (unless there's another match?)

    http://www.thethistlearchive.net/1876-77-reserves

Re the Smithfield, are you sure that's Partick Thistle? The team known as 'Thistle' was from Bridgeton and we often get mixed up with them in the modern day. The contemporary press were usually very good at stating 'Thistle' or 'Partick Thistle' with very few problems. Do you have the source snippet per chance?

Glad to be of assistance 😁

You are right about the date of the Ramblers match - my handwritten notes leave a lot to be desired in terms of legibility.

Smithfield game is taken from the North British Daily Mail of 15/5/77:
