Hurray, a full house of nats not reading the content 🙂

Labour are not removing private schools charity status, but they will slap VAT on fees which does the same thing but with less red tape

Em, it doesn’t do “the same thing”.

The biggest benefit of charitable status is National Non-Domestic Rates Relief, and of course no Corporation Tax on any “surplus”.

    When will IndyRef2 happen?

The decision has already been made I'm afraid.  There's no point on keeping on asking the same question over and over again.

    We said No!

That is a fantastic first post.

I will follow your career here with interest.

One terrible result of the Clearances was many of those cleared off their land were shipped out to the American and Caribbean Colonies to be harshly employed as indentured workers on plantations and land holdings.

To this day one of the poorest sections of Trinidadian society is the descendants of Scottish indentured plantation workers.

The indentured period pre dated the influx of African Slavery.

I”m aware of the “red legs” in Barbados, but wasn’t aware of anything similar in Trinidad.

Whether she paid up or not is irrelevant. She’s on film saying what she said.
And whether he wants to press charges or not should also be irrelevant.

In Scotland it is irrelevant - “pressing charges” is one of these English things that people think applies everywhere.

This video is ancient and pre-dates any Starmer announcement.  There is a good chance that in another couple of years this policy will have been promised and reversed at least half a dozen times.

It must be tough being a Labour supporter, and believing in some of these policies, to then see them torn away from you.

    You have my absolute sympathy.

I don’t have a problem with kids on flights, bar one thing. If one is sat immediately behind me and starts kicking the seat. Even then, that’s a rare occurence. Most times the kids act a bit mental for a brief period before falling asleep. Adults on the other hand? Should ban a lot of the fcukers who can’t go five minutes without a drink, shouting, swearing, acting the Joe Kunt and, in extreme cases, start physically fighting, abusing cabin staff, or trying to force open the feckin’ door of the plane while at 30,000 feet…. Have yet to see any kid display those levels of kuntery.

For reasons of possible mild kuntery, or a noisy wean, I never, ever, travel without my fully charged iPhone which contains 15,760 songs at present, and, importantly… Bose noise cancelling over-ear headphones. Never. Leave. Home. Without.

I’ve never experienced any of the adult behaviour you have described.  Where are you flying to, and with whom?

You did read the article? How else would you expect Nicola to have communicated such direction to her MSPs?

You did read the article?  It says nothing about MSP’s pay, other than to confirm it is increasing.

It is Scottish Ministers pay that they have capped.  This isn’t complicated.

Grady is not a random member of the public as you are trying to portray. His position , employment and salary for that matter as an MP is contingent on being voted in by his constituents on the back of his pledges, manifesto and political party ethos. Anyway we are clearly on opposite ends of the argument which is absolutely fine - though to throw in a "politics of envy" statement in support of your argument is very Tory of you ha

Who mentioned “random member of the public”?  And if he was elected on a manifesto, can you point me to where it said that they wouldn’t accept any pay rise voted through?

There is no argument. Writing to someone insisting they take part of their salary and donate it to charity is p***kish behaviour.

My understanding of the "trough" is not the salaries Parliamentarians vote for themselves but the very substantial pool of funds which is available and can be be claimed for expenses, office rents, staffing  and equipment costs, jollies to outside meetings, conferences etc., hire of private jets, yachts, limos. I am sure there are other costs which can be reimbursed.

Which would completely negate the point made by @KingRocketman II.  Writing to someone insisting they should give part of their salary to charity is just the politics of envy.

I also don’t get the problem with the payment of legitimate expenses.  Abuse of expenses is not on, and should be a disciplinary issue.  Office rent, equipment costs etc are prerequisites of being able to represent your constituents.

if you had lobbied publicly to get your job on the basis that current incumbents had their snouts n the trough, were out of touch with those outside their bubble, and that if you got the job you would be a breath of fresh air, then you would be a hypocrite in accepting any newly offered pay rise on gaining the job.

If you were not appointed by the public to your current position, then your comparison is completely redundant.

Utter nonsense. Taking the pay that is awarded to you is not “having your snout in the trough”.
