Genuinely, about 4 or 5 years ago I was contacted by a headhunter about a job in Nottingham. It was a no brainer for me - couldn't afford it. House prices trump taxes by a huge margin. I would be a lot worse off.

Absolutely - unless you are earning enormous amounts, no one is moving for a few grand a year. And if you are earning enormous amounts, it will be Monaco you leave for, not Carlisle.

And of course, this is what we see through the “lived experience” of differential tax rates.

Paisley wasn't an orangeman so I doubt that very much.

As far as I'm aware, Togo and Ghanain orangemen have participated in the Belfast 12th July parade.

Are you sure he wasn’t?  His Wikipedia page certainly says he was at one point.

It’s  the faster rise in Scotland since the ‘50s that drove the decision to try MUP in Scotland before the rest of the UK.

Unless @strichenerhas had a damascene conversion on this issue it seems a strange point for him to be making

To be honest, I don’t think he read past the headline

This is true if you are selective about the starting point.  If we began in (say) 1950 and matched the UK rises then we would be far better off than we currently are.

Given this is a thread about MUP, not sure why 1950 is in anyway relevant here?

Given the noise in the data caused by Covid any attempts to unequivocally declare the MUP experiment to be a success or  failure must be seen as either scientifically illiterate or disingenuous.

    Agreed.

    Benefits of minimum unit pricing

Modelling estimates that over the first five-year period of minimum unit pricing there will be:

    • 400 fewer alcohol-related deaths
    • 8,000 fewer alcohol-related hospital admissions

At full effect, after 20 years, there will be:

    • 120 fewer alcohol-related deaths per year
    • 2,000 fewer alcohol-related hospital admissions per year

So the legislation was intended to reduce alcohol-related deaths, therefore it isn't fixing the issues that it was designed to tackle.  But I am sure you already knew that as it has been pointed out numerous times already.

You are of course right. We would have been better matching the rise in the rest of the UK.

Increase MUP to £5, that'll sort it. 🙄

Reading the article - 5th para:

“Scotland had a slower rise than the UK as a whole but remains the worst-affected country for alcohol-specific deaths.”

I'd absolutely love one of the self righteous wankers on here who love giving their wee lectures about blaming the ref to come on here and explain this.

It’s as corrupt as you can get.

Can I also say how much of a w**k Scott Hastings is?

Someone ask Sam his opinion on the worst team getting punted.

To be fair to him, they did that before the game and he said Wales should be relegated.

It's a poor analogy given that one can be Jewish in terms of both religion and ethnicity.

The same cannot be said for Islam, or more specifically Islamism.  These are not ethnicities.

So, basically you are saying that you are a Bigot rather than a Racist?

The big Unionist parties will be in a position , with a very weak Speaker to completely sideline SNP more than ever.

I agree with almost all you’ve said, other than Flynn getting egg on his face. I can’t see that.

From a purely political standpoint, the SNP getting sidelined even more is probably great for the SNP in making soft No’s consider their position - “look, they just don’t care about Scotland”.
