  1. There is a real dilemma attached to buying a new type of bike (as opposed to upgrading the same type - ie: MTB to MTB, road to road etc.).

Do you buy something at the lower end in case you don't really get into it, but find that you are hooked and wish you went for something better (as has been the case with UtN). Or do you buy a more expensive bike and run the risk of either leaving it to go to seed in the shed, or having to punt it within months (and take the financial hit) because you realise you don't fancy this new style of riding? Either way, you're also likely to incur the wrath of s/he who must be obeyed.

I was fortunate in that I had an extended loan of a road bike so was able to assess whether I was into this form of riding. I then opted for a mid-range bike - that is, more expensive than I would have taken a chance on had I not been sure that I was going to enjoy road cycling, but not so costly that it would be way in excess of my requirements.

All I can advise is that those who are considering trying out a different type of riding try to borrow a bike from a mate or family member for a couple of months before deciding what to do. It might even be worth considering renting a bike if there are any schemes available.

I agree with you. I will no doubt get a loan before i buy but i am getting right into this cycling now and i do need to go for a road bike as it'll be better on roads and cycle track im not at all disappointed with my hybrid i'll keep this one for sure and use it on the wet days etc but i do feel the need for speed. And we do the ride to work scheme in my work which helps you aim for mid to top range bike as you make a saving and dont take the hit all in one. So basically i need to wait until next year beforing making any changes or am i just tight :)

Drooper have you looked at the pedal for scotland run yet

Edit to add anyone else use endomondo app

  2. I've got the same problem i upgraded from a MTB to a Hybrid just last month now i'm chomping at the bit to upgrade to a road bike but with mr Mrs due to give birth there is no chance of me twisting her arm to upgrade bikes just now :( oh well maybe by the start of next year

flyingscot i was looking at the pedal for scotland ride i might be intrested in doing the 50 miles also should be a breeze after this 100 mile stint in a couple of weeks which i am now worrying about the distance haha

  3. Started cycling again since moving to the Sandnes area of Norway. The cycle path's have been well designed so you can go all the way into Stavanger. It's not too far but I haven't been brave enough to try that feat yet as the steep climbs are totally doing me in. Just enjoyed a leisurely cycle round the town this morning as I was up at 7 today.

haha while you're taking in the lovely sights, think about me and flying scot going through the lovely area of Port which the cycle path goes through

I done just over 55 miles yesterday headed towards the Port but once i came to the end of the cycle pather i head back down it and towards Kilbirnie legs are knackered today need to give myself a rest day could even face cycling to work

  4. Yep, went from Paisley to Gourock on the bike. Was going to go to Kilmacolm and back but it was a nice day went to Gourock and got the train back as it was too late to cycle back to Paisley.

    40km (25 miles) in 2 hours 8 mins so about 12mph average.

Not a fan of the cycle track in Port Glasgow / Greenock area. It feels dodgy at parts and has more glass than a window factory on it too. I just got to the Port and met two guys on motorbikes on the cycle track then met a group of 6 guys with loads of booze going for a session with one of them standing at the edge of the cycle track having a slash laugh.gif. I lost the cycle track too around the Cappielow area so ended up cycling round the hills and the estates with boarded up houses and stuff lol! I think I was the first cyclist ever in Greenock the way they looked at me!

Did you go by the old playtex factory then the street with every window boarded up lol I felt the need to pick it up through there

  5. Ta much for the email BTW ;)

I'm just getting my legs back having not been on the bike for a couple of weeks due to being on holiday, then having a cold last week.

I've biked into work all week aside from Wednesday when I need the car for a meeting, and have taken a few longer routes with some more hills to break it up. I've also been hammering it at times to stretch myself, and feel okay. One of my alternative routes is over the Carman Hill here in Dunbartonshire. I generally come from the Cardross side, but decided to try it form the other side last week. By Christ, that was a challenge! It was only when I returned from work from the Cardross side this week that I spotted the sign with the gradient....17%, FFS! no wonder it was a struggle

I'm intending to go out for a big run tomorrow (50+ miles), taking in the Roseneath Peninsula, with a possible run up to Arrochar depending on how I'm feeling. I'm feeling fit enough again having slobbed out a bit on holiday, but I still feel a bit anxious about hitting the wall on a big run and taking a confidence knock in the process.

I intend to tackle this 100 mile route by telling myself it's a day out, not a race. I have no idea how I'll perform on the day, so I don't have any expectations at to what my time might be etc. Having run half-marathons a few times, I know that you only scunner yourself and the head goes down if you set unrealistic goals. I just want to finish the route in a respectable time (ie - preferably not right at the end).

It's probably about time thatI posted a review of the road bike I bought 6 weeks or so ago - the Cube Attempt. As it happens, I won't be using this for the 100 mile route as I'm doing the run in memory of my father-in-law and using (or should that be abusing) his Flying Scot. In many respects, I'd much rather I was using the Cube as it is a tremendous machine. Taught, responsive, and goes like stink when you put the hammer down. It's hard to fault from the PoV of a mediocre amateur like me, and is all the bike I need and then some.

No problem with the email and nice one doing it in respect of your father in law on the flying scot bike

Been out tonight going round the country roads around bishy houston area nice and hilly but scenic for once a change from the nice and simple cycle track, im doing the 100 miles in the same way it's a day out and not a race but one of the boys from my work is hell bent on racing it good luck to him lol i just want to finish the race dont care about the time maybe set goals on the next one.

This is the first actual offical run i've taken part in but really intrested in taking part in more so if anyone comes across in the future post them on here if you could.

  6. Yeah i'm trying to leave one day at the weekend to get at least 50 plus miles in, and do what i can during the week trying to do more road routes and hills as im guessing the 100 miles wont include alot of cycle track I can but hope.

Keep thinking about changing my bike but as i've just recently got this one i think i'll stick with it and wait until next year before upgrading to a road bike as we surely have only a couple good months decent cycle weather left lol somehow once it comes to dark nights and cold morning the bike takes a break

  7. Have we all retired our bikes for the last few days?? How is everyones training coming along for the Glasgow 100 & Pedal for Scotland,

I've just been going back n forth from work this week about 15 miles or so, Also done 20 odd going out to Kilmacolm where i came across a cycling team in full flow, those boys can fair shift

  8. I've signed up for this too although I'm taking the jessie option and doing the 100k instead of the 100 mile.

Had my first decent run back from work this evening.

No wind, no rain, it was absolutely brilliant. Just under 19 miles and it's a great way to de-stress after a crap day at the office.

I only stopped when i got home as i was getting hungry and had no cash to get something whilst out otherwise i would have kept on going.

Hills that previously ruined me seemed to breeze by today.

Team P&B going for this now lol

well 100 k 100 mile either way its going to be a good run out, I thought about the lesser option but after my trip on sunday i decided the longer option can be done.

  9. It is- 100miles is serious territory.

On an average day I do 20kph or 12mph cycling (granted that includes red lights and junctions) but even allowing for that it would take me at least 8 hours non stop to do in total!

I'll stick to pedal for Scotland at the moment. 50 miles seems fine for me.

I done 55 miles on Sunday there took me 4 hours cycling time according to my cycling app but we did have a break at the pub which wasnt included of course, I've said its goign to take me between 8 and 10 hours (i hope) to complete things 100 mile trip

You'll do the 50 miles in a breeze i done that on my hybrid you'll blow that time on your road bike

  10. Aye, they had it up then pulled it, and it is back online again. I can't remember the original route, but I think it might have been amended a bit. The reality of this thing is now hitting home. I'm looking forward to it but dreading the prospect of a strength sapping wind on the day. That is the biggest fear, but it'll be a good day out, and the buzz should carry us over the line (or, if not, a 4-man stretcher team  )

Yeah i was really confident of doing this then something clicked when i seen the route, As you say if its windy i think the run between Greenock and W Kilbride will be torture, Going to go to bishy and hunt out the start of the route head to greenock and check it out,

The stretcher team will be busy with me dont worry

  11. Aye that road in Glengarnock in the industrial estate isn't potholed but is the roughest road I've been on not to have any for me!

I just hated the road surface and hills on the way to Kilwinning

Yeah it is a rough road and the kilwinning road is just like anyother back road but with this cycle coming up i'm guessing its better off getting training in on those B roads as the routes no doubt use alot of them, I was dreaming that it would be all cycle path terrain lol

  12. just back from another run another 27 mile on the clock was somehow faster than yesterday and done longer, might have been that pint at the pullman :)

32 mile is my longest yet. going to have to increase the miles over the next few runs to get the legs ready for 100 miles not setting myself any targets on the day just be happy finishing

  13. I'm doing the 100 mile option. Give me a shout if you fancy saying hello :)

Just finshed the sign up and it offically the 100 mile option we shall see on the day lol yeah mate i'll be hanging at the back lol

Done a 25 mile stint today as a warm up well on the gps 25.84 mile lol every bit counts out tomorrow for a little longer. Planing going on a monster cycle on sunday well hopefully

  14. Fair play to all who stopped with there Mrs, I havent stopped but i have cut down alot since she became preg, i even wait until she's in bed some nights thats before starting thats just the kinda guy i am lol i dare say once the baby is here i will pretty much cut it out. And as for sleeping im sure i'll survive with what i get lol

  15. With my Mrs just over 6 weeks away we cant agree on a boys name well she has plenty but ive said no to them all girls name was easy picked just struggle with a boys

So in 6 or so weeks will it be all change, well the alcohal levels go down in my system will the fun times stop will i need to sell the playstation? or is it all a myth lol

  16. Yeah was really steep! My runtastic app thing shows that in 4 mins 22secs I climbed from 40m to 75m overall which is a fair old climb. Looking at distance the steepest part of the first hill it was roughly 250m along the slope, and a gain of 23m in height, thus fag pack calculations say that is a 9-10% gradient . Other hills further along are checking out 6.5% and then a short section called of 10% too over 100m. unsure.gif Seems a really hardcore route for a National Cycle Route- you don't get those gradients often I don't think.

A road bike is a good option, I like mine getting it fitted and set up right it makes a difference. I might need to change the pedal type or get proper shoes as the metal pedals are digging into my feet on longer rides. I'm really happy with mine so far but hybrids looked nice too- saw a few which were simply road bikes designed with flat handlebars.

Last time I headed up Glasgow way I just used the main Paisley Road West- faster than cycle track which kind of gets less direct around Pollok and you keep up with traffic fairly well but it isn't that nice a cycle.

I'm thinking of doing the shorter 40mile pedal for Scotland, did the 25miles to Kilwinning in just under 2 hours so should be good for a 3 to 3 and a half hour cycle to Edinburgh.

Might just stick to the two routes i do one to Lochwinnoch and half the Greenock run stop where it goes onto the roads i think. I'll need to look at that pedal for Scotland thing as it took me over 2 n half hours doing that greenock run but given the hills on the way back up in greenock were torture im sure i could have got that down a bit.

here's my bike i know what you mean about the hybrids with road set up my mate has one of the specialized hybrids which is more a road going bike. post-16049-0-65584600-1309878631_thumb.j

  17. Did Paisley to Kilwinning on NCR7 today which was good. Nice to have some good weather for a change even if my arms are now a wee shade of red. I'm guessing I put that suncream on a bit too late! Oops.

Not sure I'd do it again to Kilwinning though. Don't like the section between Glengarnock and KiIwinning and never saw another cyclist or walker- just 2 cars the whole time! It has some seriously short but steep hills, the surface is rubbish with potholes and at one point has been resurfaced with those chippings on tar which are lethal on a sharp turn. It's really poorly signed around there too in comparison and the mileage to Irvine at one point a good 5 mins apart goes Irvine 11 the next sign is Irvine 10 the following Irvine 11blink.gif! Never mind chucked it at Kilwinning where I was getting a lift from- noticed on the Sustrans website there is a proposed new route in the Valley following the railway through Dalry- hope that is done soon!

I was actually looking at that route at the weekend think i'll give it a pass now, Done the lochwinnoch run on sat that was enough for me. Been looking at sustrans trying to find out new routes might head up towards Glasgow way next time. Really thinking about getting myself a road bike now
