He hit the post in the opening game against County but other than that...I have nothing.

    giphy.gif

Usually when someone hits the post there's a hint of hard luck about it. That finish looks worse every time I watch it. He's not had a good season at all, partly down to our system I think but in large part down to his attitude.

To be fair to Long, we really haven't given him too many chances like that this season. Not having DT's eye for a pass probably doesn't help as his playstyle seems to really depend on these kind of through balls where he's playing on the shoulder. Sticking him out wide where he's so obviously not comfortable also doesn't help. I think Long's been the player to suffer most from us losing James Scott last January. He brought a different kind of threat across the front line which I think bought Long room to play his game. (Apologies if this isn't an original point)

All this being said, his attitude has looked really poor in all the games I watched this season, for which there's no real excuse. There's definitely a player in there if he just worked a bit harder and looked a bit more interested. Some of his play is so selfish sometimes too. He seems to shoot any opening he gets, even if it's 35 yards out on his weak foot. Some of the fouls he commits are ridiculous. There's no doubt in my mind that if he started working harder and became more of a team player, he flourish at this level.

  2. Echoing others, I'd be absolutely gobsmacked if there was anything in this Seedorf chat.
I would say he's got a bit of the Chris Humphrey about him in that he's so rapid that if a coach was able to coax any kind of football ability out of him he'd be an absolute weapon at our level and probably up to the lower half Championship of the kind of clubs that are being mentioned.
I don't see it, having made my mind up about him at Dundee away in the cup last season when he came on as a second half sub and was so comically bad that I would have advocated subbing him off again and never seeing him in a match day squad again. He hasn't been quite as bad this season but we've seen so little of him recently, despite our wide players publicly being called out as not playing well, that we can only assume he's still shite.
Realistically, I'd take shifting him off the wage bill at this point and either having a punt on another player or giving the money to Allan Campbell, probably leaning towards the latter.

Cracking 6 under round of 65 for Russell Knox in the first round of the PGA event in Mexico. Still a few players to finish but currently leading.

Excellent round. When I read your post, I went to look at the leaderboard expecting to see a less inspiring field but there's several top names in there.

Hopefully he can sustain it. With Bob and Martin Laird winning, it's been a really good last few months for the Scottish lads.

    What a place

    Should've read the key first!

So basically 30% think the Royals are better than everyone else including themselves and 12% think they need as much protection as NHS frontline, folks who could literally save their life if they got the virus.

Must be sad to be in the mind of someone that subservient.

Think Pearson got the 2nd and Faddy the 3rd, IIRC. Not forgetting Andy McLaren getting a 2nd yellow card for throwing his toys out the pram after a bit of abuse from the away end...

Aye think that's right. I don't remember a thing about the Dougie Ramsay goal or the first two reds but remember Pearson and Faddy's goals and McLaren trudging off to great cheers from the 'Well end. Don't remember much from being a 10 year old but I suppose 3 reds and a guy in a red mohawk scoring a free kick stuck with me.

If indy is ever achieved do you think Cherry et al will ever realise that they are more aligned to the tories than the left?

Isn't that kind of what the Yes movement should be though?

Everyone wants independence for their own reasons, but more than one political viewpoint has come together to achieve that aim.

For me, one of the most exciting aspects of independence is the ability to discover more about my own politics, listen to arguments and come to a view. I'm a (relatively) young voter but have been a single issue voter at every single election because I don't believe we can realise our potential without independence.

If folk in the party are right leaning or left leaning, doesn't bother me one bit. Once we achieve it, we shake hands, go separate ways and start voting on shaping the country rather than getting a country to shape.

  8. This public airing on Twitter from all individuals involved is embarrassing. Cherry, Blackman and Smith in particular should be hanging their heads in shame. They're supposed to be parliamentarians and their squabbling over social media has been cringeworthy.

Whatever you think of the NEC results, it was a democratic process and that's that.  If the party didn't vote the way you wanted, maybe it's not the party for you?

For what it's worth, this is the kind of conduct I expect from party representatives on social media:

Gracious in defeat, but ultimately acknowledging we all want the same thing, independence.

I like the SM8 black ones but reckon they wouldn’t age well!! I was going to get the tiger wedges in his specs but only do them in 2 lofts! I’m new to golf so wedges quite confuse me with the degrees!

I've had black wedges before but my current ones are just regular chrome. The black ones will rust which is cool if you like that and I believe it generates a bit more spin. I decided against for my newest ones as I didn't like the rusty look and already have an issue with generating too much spin so really didn't need any more.

Need some advice, I’ve preferred new irons now I need wedges, it’s a toss up between SM8 or MG2 wondering if anyone has these or has any recommendations?

Not SM8s but I have SM7s in 52 and 58 and love them, especially the 52.

I'd recommend getting a fitting (lots of places offer this free if you purchase the clubs which it sounds like you intend on doing) and they should let you try out different ones to see which you like best. A good fitter for wedges would also be able to advise you on grinds, of which most manufacturers offer a few, based on your contact with the ground and the kind of turf conditions you usually play. E.g. I have a grind on my 52 more suited to full shots with a square clubface but on my 58 I have a grind more suited to opening the club up for shots around the green and from bunkers and has a little more bounce.

    Hope this helps.

Made bogey when he finished today and missed the cut.

Is this the professional golfer's equivalent to when an amateur waits 10 minutes for the green on a par 5 to clear when 200+ yards out before topping 20 yards down the fairway?

When do they usually go back to normal tees/Greens?

I've seen it vary from course to course but somewhere between late February and late March is where I'd expect the majority of courses to be back on normal tees/greens.

Links courses can be on normal greens much longer while parkland courses that have a tendency to not drain as well may be later.

That’s it confirmed that courses will close down south during lockdown. The PM rejected the appeal to keep them open. A ridiculous decision in my opinion

Seconded, that's ridiculous. Can obviously see the benefit of closing the clubhouse but the course? Gtf.

    Great play.
Given the conditions you’d have been brave to declare you were going to count today’s round in advance of playing which of course you would have to do for it to count in the new system.

Very true. Though I think after this I'll probably just pre register for all my casual rounds. Worst that could happen would be it doesn't make my top 8 out of 20.

  15. Braved the elements for a round today despite my better judgement and glad I did, a best ever score of 74 (+2) for me in very strong winds (to give an indication, I had to re-tee my ball on the16th hole twice as the wind blew the ball off the tee). 8 pars and a bogey on the front, 6 pars, 2 bogies and birdie on the back.

Had to grind at the start, holing 10ish footers for par on both the first and second but then started to hit the ball really nicely. Have always struggled with my spin playing into the wind so was very satisfying to be able to control my ball and hold the score.

Feel like I did leave a couple out there. Very foolish bogey on the par 5 8th, one of the easiest holes on the course and left a couple of very make-able birdie putts short but no real complaints. Just a shame the new handicap system wasn't in place for casual rounds, that would have been a belter of a card to submit.

My wife got me a winter membership which ends on the 31st of March. So what happens with my handicap? Il still have one obviously but will I be able to improve it without being a member somewhere?

Well, going by the above, that would suggest you wouldn't be able to hold a handicap but confusion then is, what is this all about:

"If you aren't already a member of a golf club, we recommend you contact your national association."

Does that mean they'd give you a handicap? Or recommend a course in your area to join?

I noticed when registering on the app there was an option to choose that you were a casual player (as opposed to a member of a club), no idea what that section is for or what you find if you register that way. From my point of view, if they're not allowing non-club members to get a handicap, this whole change is totally unnecessary.

I thought it was wrong but they seemed fairly certain you could. Can’t remember which poster or page it was on but can’t be bothered going back.

Don't think I was ever certain, apologies if it came across that way. I think think it would be a real waste if they didn't allow non-members to get one with this new system. I'm a member of a club so it doesn't affect me but their chat is all about being able to take your handicap to any course and that the new system will be more inclusive so to deny non-members a handicap seems to go against those principles imo.

Anyway, did a bit of a search and yielded the following results which, to me seem to contradict each other:

    image.png.4bc52b04289ef8e5ef6d0d61a490067e.png

To me, this suggests you don't need a membership for one but:

    image.png.9b6ed690500e38aeca525ddbd99dfb63.png

This would seem to address it more directly but rather contradicts the previous section.

Do you no longer have to be a member of a club to get a handicap under this new system?

I would hope not. My understanding is that the point of this new system allows you take your handicap everywhere and apply it on any course so it'd be a huge own goal if they didn't allow non-members to get an official handicap. They'd be the most likely to play wherever they fancy on a particular day and therefore take advantage of the handicap's flexibility to be used on any course.

Edit to add: I've been undertaking an effort to play Scotland's top 100 myself. Currently at a 4 but only started this year. My 4 are Newmachar Hawkshill, Nairn Dunbar, Moray New and Fraserburgh.

I asked this on a Facebook group earlier and wondered if anyone here can help as well.

I see you can use recreational rounds now which is a good thing as some folk simply don’t like playing in competitions or don’t have the time at the weekend. It says you need to “pre register” your round. Does anyone know how you do that? Is it just through the club? Or do you do it via a website/app?

I've been wondering this too, this would suit me well to submit my scores for casual rounds but I don't think it's been well explained how to do this. It's listed as one of their goals from this change to make it much easier to obtain and maintain your handicap which I think is great. But I don't think they've made it entirely clear as yet what you do if A. you aren't a member of a club and B. you are a member somewhere but don't have an official handicap as yet.

  20. Played Fraserburgh Golf Club today in my quest to play the Scottish top 100 courses. That makes it 4/100.

Fabulous course. Front 9 starts with a fairly mundane opener, which lies on the same very flat land near the clubhouse as the 18th. But from then on it's up and down for most of the front 9. The 2nd smacks straight up a hill and the 3rd tees off from the top to provide some wonderful views:

    IMG_20201015_132302.thumb.jpg.5993cf452e40140fd1293b4e4c36369d.jpg

    IMG_20201015_132258.thumb.jpg.16f7f82733510c2e8b9d4064c930724a.jpg

Rest of the front 9 is tricky with the thick grass on the dunes providing a real hazard if you're a bit wayward. Highlights for me were the 4th, a short par 4 with a small green perched perilously on the side of a hill and the 7th, one of the best par 3's I think I've ever played. Short but guarded by 3 pot bunkers at the front of the green:IMG_20201015_141101.thumb.jpg.10f604b45850377e1dd5360f0eeafef2.jpg

Back 9 starts with the fantastic 10th, a short, dogleg par 4 with a fairway littered with humps and bumps and a green tucked away in the dunes. Further highlights for me were the 15th, 16th and 17th. 15th a brilliant par 5, in a slight half-pipe between the dunes. 16th was a terrific par 4 littered with bunkers and 17th, another lovely par 3, albeit a slightly longer one than  the 7th at about 180 yards.

Although I'm just at the start, Fraserburgh is probably my favourite so far. I think it has the best par 3s of any course I've played and some great holes inbetween. It's tough and unforgiving on poor shots but most of the best courses are. Slight shame that the opening and closing holes are so bland because the rest is so good.

  21. Know a lot of people switch off on the PGA Tour around this time of the year, particularly with a far more interesting European Tour event this weekend. But I watched a bit of it last night and was actually a great finish. Peter Malnati flew out the traps and posted a good early score in the clubhouse so most of the viewing was concentrated on seeing if anyone could catch it. Sergio eventually did catch him, including this glorious fairway wood shot to set up an eagle on the 14th:

Followed by this to set up a birdie on the 18th to win by one:

I'd probably put Hylton in the same pile as Danny Johnson and Elliot Frear in terms of our recent signings.

He was alright and 'on his day' he was good.

He clearly has something about him in a very specific way eg: in Hylton's case he's quick and has good feet, Johnson was a finisher and Frear was quick and could dig out a cross but in each case playing for us looked about their ceiling and weren't really going to kick on in the same way that some of our other more notable signings from that level did.

My favourite part of those highlights is being reminded that at the start of last season, Donnelly was absolutely pinging goals in from everywhere (see 1:32).

I'm not convinced Hylton was actually that quick. He certainly had quick feet but I always thought his running style looked quite awkward. Although he had a few nice assists last season, I'm not that fussed he's away. Wish him well but he didn't fit our system and, even if he did, I reckon I'd take Seedorf ahead of him in a 4-3-3 (as Robinson was doing as well tbf).

Seedorf was horrible last season, like almost amusingly bad, but I think he's been serviceable this season so far. He's looked more aggressive, taken on his man more and used his pace which, for some reason, he seemed to be scared to do last season. Not sure how bold a take this is but out of the two, I'm happier to have Seedorf than Hylton. Both of them would pretty much be fulfilling a come-off-the-bench-when-we-go-433-to-try-and-go-more-offensive role and I reckon Seedorf's pace is more frightening for defenders than Hylton.
