Looks like says it all and who doesn’t deliberately protect their face, it’s called a human reaction.

In the end the game had no significance and the teams that went up always deserve to do so.

Of course, it's an instinctive natural human reaction to put your hand in front of your face to protect yourself. Please don't think that I'm criticising Del for it. But that doesn't stop it being a penalty though, as it is still intentional handball, deliberately stopping the ball with your arm.

The game maybe had no significance for Burgh, but prior to kick off and up till the last 30 minutes (when Shotts weren't winning) it had major significance for Glencairn.

Of course you are right, the teams that are promoted deserve to be promoted. That was never in dispute.

  2. Yep, agree with that, Gerry rarely gets to watch a match properly as he's always behind the lens, but he does a fantastic job every week.

Two penalty calls in the game, one given for Burgh and one not given for Glencairn. The Burgh one clearly comes off Kyle Chrystal's thigh and rebounds onto his arm, so shouldn't have been given. The Glencairn one looks like it hits Del Esplin on the arm and the head at the same time, so should have been given as Del was deliberately using his arm to protect the ball from hitting his face.

Not that it matters now, Glencairn still won the game. What a magical finish that was by Matty Gear. 👍

  3. As for the game itself today, I agree with the comments above. We deserved the win over the 90 minutes and the winning goal was "wow" moment from young Matty Gear. Thankfully we'll get to see it as many times as we want on Gerry's video.

Burgh put out a strong starting team, but it wasn't working for them and Murdie made four changes at the interval, which showed that the result was clearly important as far as he was concerned. He had a 100% record up until today, and he wanted to keep that going to the end of the season. The changes made very little difference, Burgh rarely looked like equalising in the second half. One close range effort by Lafferty which young Chris White saved on the goal line after it had initially squirmed through his legs. Other than that I felt we were very comfortable defensively.

It was good comforting to know that six of today's starting team are already signed up for next season, and Joe/Billy/Willie will continue to work on the other players they want to hold onto, of which there will hopefully be quite a few.

I've said it a few times already, but I'll say it again. We started the season with a new management team and eleven new signings. The expectations were really for a transition season, but we have taken it to the penultimate game in terms of a challenge for promotion. That will naturally raise expectations for next season, but that's a good thing to look forward to. The big money of Drumchapel United and Johnstone Burgh will no longer be a factor, and the teams coming down will not be expecting to have an easy return back up straight away. They only need to look at where Petershill, Kilwinning Rangers and Cambuslang Rangers (all relegated from the Premier last season) have ended this season. There will be a threat from Ardrossan Winton Rovers, Vale of Clyde and Cumbernauld United who are all teams on the rise again.

Meantime we have one game left, at home to Maybole next Saturday, and we want that "best of the rest" fourth place spot.

  4. The two clubs did discuss the possibility of moving the game to the Friday night, but not until after the deadline by which the date change would have had to be confirmed.

As we were still in with a chance of promotion going into today's game, we wanted our full squad available and for the players to have their normal Saturday match preparation.

It was good to be able to watch the Cambuslang Rangers v Petershill match last night with all the onfield and off-field (and sometimes both) incidents. There were a good number of interested neutrals there which boosted the crowd, which we could have benefitted from by changing our game to the Friday as well, but we didn't want to negatively impact our chances of winning today's game in any way.

Time they bring in tighter measures on licensing, no ground sharing to be allowed, each team should have their own ground which meets the licensing standard, the idea of ground sharing to me does not make sense, allow teams a grace period of say 3 years to have their own facility.

I use KRR as an example, how long can they continue to float around someone else's ground? Why should they think they have a god given right to have the council build them a facility or have sole access to a new build council facility. I would be interested to know how long they have been homeless for, could easily be 10 years?

Are you suggesting that all WoSFL teams should be licensed and have their own ground ?

If not, why are you using KRR as an example ? They're not licensed.

KRR are not a licensed club.

Kilwinning are a yo-yo club and Kilbirnie haven't won a top flight league or Scottish JC for 47 years!

There's a lot of teams who haven't won a top flight league or Scottish Junior Cup for a long time. They are still big clubs with big supports.

    Kilwinning and Kilbirnie big hitters?

I get your point, but it's simply not the case. Both clubs have great history, but haven't won anything of note in many years.

The big hitters are the clubs with the biggest budgets, therefore no surprise that Drumchapel and Johnstone have secured promotion.

The 3rd promotion place was always going to be more difficult to predict. If it's to be Shotts, that's a great achievement.

I do get where Mine Man is coming from though. Kilbirnie and Kilwinning are still big names in the game at our level, with the potential to get back to that level. They still have much bigger regular supports than most of the other teams in the league. I personally expected them both to be promotion contenders at the start of the season, and I'm surprised to see them both only in mid table. I do expect to see them challenging nearer the top next season.

  9. I always felt that Drumchapel and Johnstone Burgh would have the final say in the promotion issue, simply because of the level of investment in their squads in comparison to the rest of the clubs. And that's not meant as a criticism, if you have the money then there's nothing wrong with spending it to make your side better. At all levels of football, the teams who are able to invest the most in their squads generally are the ones who get the rewards.

Although we're not officially out of the promotion equation yet, we need to win our two remaining games (home v Johnstone Burgh and Maybole Juniors), and hope that Shotts and Ashfield both gain no more than one point from their remaining games. It's extremely unlikely, but there's still a very tiny glimmer of hope.

People who invest in their local team and community should be commended . They have plans submitted for the ground, facilities and exterior car park.

lots of teams have in the past have spent big on there team and squad the most recent being Darvel who have also invested in their facilities.

Any investment to the game should be welcomed.

Oh of course, please don't get me wrong.  The investment in Burgh is not only good for Burgh, but it has raised the profile of the WoSFL with the likes of Lafferty and Dorrans appearing on the scene. Burgh have every right to spend that money however they see fit, as long as they meet the rules of the league.

What is also beyond dispute as well, though, is that Burgh have invested heavily in their playing squad in terms of wages to ensure that they get promotion. When it looked like that was in danger of not happening, decisive action was taken to change the manager which appears to have had the desired effect. Given the level of investment in the playing squad and the wages some players are on which you will be more than aware of, failing to get promoted this season would have been unthinkable.

  11. Of that there is no doubt, Joe Pryce and Billy Ogilvie have done a great job shaping our squad this season. There's no doubt they will have the gig for next season and we will strengthen in the summer. And we play a style of football that is pleasing on the eye when it clicks into gear. A few tweaks here and there and we'll hopefully be in the mix again next season.

  12. Well it looks like the end of the promotion chase for us now, it'd take an extraordinary sequence of results to keep us in it.

Today was a toss of the coin between the teams, Shotts edged it on a penalty kick that came out of nowhere, it was two very evenly matched teams.

Had we won our last three matches, it might still not have been enough for promotion, so I'm not downbeat tonight. Instead I'm pleased we have taken the promotion issue to the month of May, with a new management team and eleven new players at the start of the season.

We're going in the right direction, and it looks like the uneven playing field of the crazy money spenders are not going to be in our league next season, so we'll see how we compete next time.

Meantime, two home games to finish the season. Johnstone Burgh and Maybole. We could yet have a big say in what happens at the top and bottom of the table. Our friends along the road might be supporting us on 18th May.......

  13. That's an enormous result for Cambuslang Rangers. If Maybole lose to Johnstone Burgh on Tuesday, they then face Drumchapel United away on Friday which could be Drum's trophy presentation night. At the same time Cambuslang are at home to Petershill who haven't played for a couple of weeks. If Maybole don't pick up anything from those two games, and Cambuslang beat Peasy, then Cambuslang's fate comes down to Maybole's last game - away to Rutherglen Glencairn. 😎
