  1. 5 Live also said they`d tried to contact Kelvin McKenzie, but with no luck, the silence from him is particularly deafening.

Today I offer my profuse apologies to the people of Liverpool for that headline. I too was totally misled. Twenty three ago I was handed a piece of copy from a reputable news agency in Sheffield in which a senior police officer and a senior local MP were making serious allegations against fans in the stadium. I had absolutely no reason to believe that these authority figures would lie and deceive over such a disaster.

As the Prime Minister has made clear these allegations were wholly untrue and were part of a concerted plot by police officers to discredit the supporters thereby shifting the blame for the tragedy from themselves. It has taken more than two decades, 400,000 documents and a two-year inquiry to discover to my horror that it would have been far more accurate had I written the headline The Lies rather than The Truth. I published in good faith and I am sorry that it was so wrong."

    – KELVIN MACKENZIE

  2. Yeah, that looked nasty.

Gutted for all those fans though, they live and breath cricket.

Both McCullum and Mills have no serious damage, just bruises and grazes. I thought Mills might have had a broken cheekbone, certainly he had a stoater of a black eye. The players never heard each other shouting for it due to the crowd noise.

  3. I'd like to see a return of the mountain TT in next years Tour, it doesn't feature too often. The one up Alpe d'Huez was crazy with the number of fans though, I'd pick a different climb. I can remember a tremendous mountain TT back in the 90's won by Berzin, can't remember the location though.

Just did a quick google, his only stage win was in 1996, a 19 mile TT from Bourg Saint Maurice to the ski resort of Val D'Isere. Good memory!

  4. The final ODI is warming up nicely. England were all out for 182 with 4 and a bit overs left, looked like an easy target for SA. Anderson and Dernbach have started well though and bagged a few early wickets. SA 35-3 from 8 overs.

  5. Now announce hes retiring ENTIRELY from the professional game. Bit of a stunner!!!

Not half. As he had already chucked ODIs and T20 I sort of expected him to give up Tests and play county cricket for a couple of years at least, very surprised he has chucked it completely.

His form has been patchy lately but he will be a hard act to follow as skipper, home and away Ashes wins and top of the world rankings is good going.

  6. I think he will go. England lose number 1 spot, end of series. And of course the KP issue. Either way he has done a good job,And i assume he will keep playing test cricket?

The talk on 5 live earlier seemed to be to leaning towards him retiring from test cricket.

  7. Media all reporting that Strauss will quit as Captain today.

    From Twitter late last night...

“@TheCricketerMag: Late ECB email lands inviting press to Lord's for a media conference with Hugh Morris, followed by one with Giles Clarke in Derby. Curious.”

Strauss looked stressed out of his nut by the time the test series was done, and it probably had more to do with the KP carry on than the actual matches. IMO it can only be one of two things, either Strauss is giving up the captaincy or they are announcing very early that KP will not be having his contract renewed.

  8. Nice to see Sergio driving well, holing monster putts, fist pumping, and even almost cracking a smile.

Looks like I've put the hex on him, hit 3 or 4 poor shots in the last few holes.

On a brighter note, Tigger is having a mare.

  9. The commentator's on our coverage were going mental at that.

Sky Sports were using the Kiwi commentary with Justin Marshall summarising, he was scratching his head trying to figure out why the Aussies thought this was the right tactic. What was the Aussie view of the ref? I thought Owens gave a few borderline decisions to the All Blacks. There was one in particular in the run up to Genia being sin binned where I thought the Kiwis shoud have been penalised for holding on.

  10. Unsurprisingly the natives are up in arms about this. Calls for Robbie Deans' head are growing. Losing 14 out of the last 17 games v the All Blacks plus having not won the Bledisloe Cup for the last 10 years certainly fan the flames.

The Aussies kicked some amount of ball away this morning, every time they got a winger on the move they tried to dink it down the line and it never worked. They did defend well for most of the game, but gave away a load of penalties and their set pieces were very shaky.

  11. Listened to David Walsh on SSN about this ,,,ohmy.gif stripped of everything he's ever won , on of the most cynical drug cheats in the history of sport

I listened to the woman who was formerly head of the British anti doping agency on BBC, she thinks there is a long way to go yet before he is actually stripped of anything.

  12. Need to build your team around greats like KP

That may be true, but there is no "I" in team, but there is a "u" in c**t.

No matter how good he is, it's a team game and he has to be willing to fit into that team. He's currently 34 from 32 balls at the Oval.

Edit: He was looking good until Simon Jones ripped out his off stump with a corker of a ball. Emotional day at the Oval with Tom Maynard's two former counties playing each other for the first time since his death, with both sides wearing his former squad numbers.

  13. Anyone watching the US amateurs championship? Quite exciting, guy just missed a 5 foot putt to take it to a play-off after 36 holes.

Watched it last night, what a bobble that putt took about 18 inches from the hole. Lord knows what he was thinking when he pulled the driver out on the extra hole.
