Aye, the usual complaint from greenkeepers in April is that it's too dry and cold to get decent growth in the turf (which really needs a ground temperature of at least 7 or 8 degrees to get going properly) but at least with cold/dry Aprils they can get out and prep everything ready for when they can get the cutters down, so this April has really set everyone back, and I dread to think the last time the majority of courses managed to get their fairways cut this year.

I've been saying for years that golf clubs need to get out of the mindset of playing competition golf in late May/early April, instead extending the season into end October/beginning November, as at least most (parkland) courses generally aren't suffering from a high water table later in the season as opposed to after a wet winter.

I remember the 2021 start to the season as f**k all would grow because it had been so dry. Our staff have been able to get out with the smaller machines and cut greens to 5mm, tees to 11mm, and do some other bits and pieces, but it's far too soft to get the big stuff on course. The fairways were all cut an aerated a fortnight ago so they are not too bad.

Say what you like about how boring Scheffler is, but he really knows how to keep his foot on the throat of the rest of the field.

Which is somewhat ironic when you consider his fancy dance steps at the point of impact.

He rarely gets himself in really bad positions, something McIlroy should have paid attention to when playing with him the first two days.

Although Aberg is going to come up just short, this is a superb showing for his first ever major, especially at Augusta.

Smith holing out of a bunker for Eagle on 2.

A very good start for him there.

He's the type of player who could dig out a 65 or something, going by some of the early scores there are birdies out there.

  4. It's as strange a Saturday as I can ever remember at Augusta. So many players getting into good positions only to hit a bad shot or two and slide back down the leaderboard.

Listening to McGinley is torture at the best of times but him (and Dougherty and Jamie Weir) talking about McIlroy verges on cult-like hysteria.

I quite like Rory, he seems like an interesting and thoughtful guy, but getting any more majors is looking unlikely now with the quality of younger opposition. If he finishes his career on four, he'll have underachieved given the talent he burst onto the scene with. He was unlucky at St Andrews - leaves a couple of good putts on the lip on the front 9 to really secure himself, and then Smith plays the round/back 9 of his life - but he needs an awful lot of things to click to win another now.

I wouldn't say he was unlucky at St. Andrews, he hit most of the greens in regulation but was miles from the hole most of the time. Smith gave himself much better chances for birdies.
