It's always been May 31 for us.

    Same with us.

Most of our OOC first team players seem to have their contracts up in June according to the official site (though it's not clear what date):

Gillespie, Tait, HartleyDunne, Livingstone (on loan at Clyde), Maguire, Long

Aside from loanees the only ones whose permanent deals are up in May are:

Ferguson (on loan at Linfield), Watt, Manzinga, Ilic

Joking aside, if the club or SPFL had a service where I could watch 90 min replays of old motherwell games for a reasonable price, I'd be all over it...

On the monetising side the club do actually have a subscription service with (sporadic) full match replays going back to last season (the first one is the 3-1 win vs Dundee from last season). There are quite a few recent games that were almost certainly streamed live but don't seem to have been uploaded. https://tv.motherwellfc.co.uk/

In terms of actual old Motherwell games the sort of content that we'd all love to see  (eg: the full match versions of the sort of highlights you find in a YouTube trawl) I suppose there would be rights issues in terms of content and what not and clearly the further back we go the less likely the full match footage exists but an archive of that sort of stuff would be worth chucking £5.99 a month at tbh.

Also, @well fan for life - thank you. I hadn't seen that YouTube account either.

So this puts him in the same place as he was last year - so a good end of the season, start to next and offski in August I assume?

I'm not sure on the logic from DT's point of view unless there is a reasonable release clause in there....

Also - fantastic work from the club to get that done.

Did you draft the press release? 😄

I don't really pay much attention to the compo/tribunal stuff because, in general, it really fucking bores me. Is it literally just a case of putting the numbers into a formula and applying it, or is there room for leeway and appeals? I.e, if Turnbull leaves on a free next summer could we point to teams valuing him at £3m last summer or winning YPotY as examples of his worth or would we still only be due roughly the same as Hastie/Cadden etc?

There's a clause in the SPFL rules (page 58) that references criteria for consideration (in particular F22.6 "substantiated interest shown by other clubs in acquiring the services of the player") but that seems to be specifically related to a tribunal.

  5. For all it's easy to be snarky about the Turnbull documentary that's it the 4th most popular video ever on the MFC YouTube channel in the space of a week - so it's done #numbers cross platform (and YouTube seems to be a socials channel we have a bit of difficulty with) and tbh it's a very well put together documentary.

In terms of the Reserves stuff though - we have a camera placed in the stand at the games anyway (certainly the ones I've been at) which is presumably for analysis. There's someone with a go-pro/handheld and that seems to be what we've been using for the social posts this season, so presumably the footage is there - it's simply a choice not to edit together and post a more traditional highlights package.

This is the last Reserves game that was posted on YouTube and it has 1.4k views (as does the Reserves highlights vs Aberdeen) - which is actually more than the player reactions, story of the match and manager pre & post match from the same week.

I get that we use analytics to track engagement and the Twitter stuff makes sense as it has shifted to being an algorithm based platform but ultimately - niche as it may be -sometimes folk would just be happy to get a look at the Dev games in a fairly standard format that gives you a bit of context.

I've always thought that he's not the type of player who would make us a lot of money, but he will still be 22 when his contact expires next summer so if he were to leave on a bosman, at least we would still get compensation (provided he didn't join Columbus Crew via a loan at Oxford).

By all accounts, he's first in and last out every day at Fir Park, is super fit and a dedicated pro. Right back to when he was in the team as a teenager, it always impressed me how he wasn't at all fazed by going toe-to-toe with the likes of Scott Brown. I think his game is centre far more on attitude and physical condition, than it is on technique.

I said this last week before the game to my mates (right before he scored twice and got a MOTM performance of course) that I thought being a really good Motherwell player was his level and that if he does go next summer, he's the type of player I could see going down to League One and if he doesn't become an eventual templated returning Motherwell player, I could see him ending up back up the road at a team like Hibs or Aberdeen.

This might seem harsh, I do love him and he's exactly the type of player fans like to see, would run through a brick wall for the team etc, but my gut instinct is that he maybe just lacks a little finesse to play at a much higher level than this.

I've mentioned this before but Burrows did a pod with with Scottish FA Marketing Podcast a while back that's really good - one his points was that we look to develop a player brand and cited Campbell as an example (along with referencing the Gboly 'Brand Personality Strategy Document').

    Quote

"It was very important for us to try and establish every player with a brand, if you like, some are more obvious than others....A really good example of that would be Allan Campbell.

The vision we had for Allan was this hard working, industrial, really serious side to his game. When anyone talks about him it's always about "he's in the gym first, he's out last". So from that point of view we wanted to we framed Allan and we always frame Allan with the message publicly is that Allan's never involved in anything that's jovial, Allan's never involved in anything we do that's "fun" or kicking about as it doesn't really fit to Allan's narrative. Allan's all about hard work, endeavour and effort. So if you ever look at anything with Motherwell and search over the last 6 or 7 months anything that you read or see; pictures, videos anything with Allan will be hard work orientated."

The point re: Campbell is that the key qualities they've tried to frame and reinforce are exactly as you say attitude and physical condition. How you've described his is exactly how the club have presented him publicly and also what you see on the park every week. Which I suppose isn't as sexy as Turnbull or Gboly or even Scott.

Obviously there needs to be buy in from the player if we're actively pushing him front and centre (like making a 40 min documentary about his rehab from injury or lobbying for a centre half to get a Scotland call up for example) but I get the feeling that Campbell's someone we've pushed but he's kind of flown under the radar because his "narrative" isn't quite as eye-catching.

I mean, we've had a ton of handwringing about Turnbull over the past few days but not a peep about Campbell - they both have exactly the same length  of time remaining on their contracts.

Maybe if we'd gone all in on the Lanarkshire Kante brand it may have had more of a hook.

Just look at the young boy Gilmour who told “The Rangers” to get to fcuk

Gilmour's pathway to Chelsea's first team mirrors the decisions McKinstry and McAlear took to patch our Academy and join Leeds and Norwich respectively at the start of the season that got some folk bent out of shape because we were perceived to be selling players on before we'd even seen them in the first team - McKinstry made the bench last season, McAlear was part of the squad in the pre-season friendlies.

Aside from him being an exceptionally talented player the reason Gilmour's getting his opportunity is precisely because he's a Chelsea Academy player and he's a product of their system - if it wasn't Gilmour then it's be some other re-gen plucked from their stockpile that would be in their midfield at the moment.

Hope for his own sake, he doesn't make it near the first team - he'd be the definition of a "hiding to nothing" regardless of how good he was...

I'm not actually sure he'd be eligible anyway. He's already played for Crusaders and Oldham this season.

A minute off the bench for Oldham and 9 mins for Crusaders.

    ^^^^ This post is nonsense....

Agree with this - but in his defence, I thought when we were more up against it in the 2nd half, he pretty much always took the right option and showed a bit of discipline and awareness, which has pretty much always been missing up until now. Not giving up on him yet TBH.

I was genuinely quite surprised to see that he has the most minutes of any of our collection of forwards when I looked that stuff up last week. It felt like he was disappeared for a while after the proper stuff started.

There's definitely a space for him in the squad - moreso than Seedorf and Ilic certainly.

I thought Hylton took a weird stutter step which completely took away any hope of us getting anything out of it as well. All in all we made a complete arse of it.

Tbf, I don't think he's fully expecting the ball to come back as @Ron Aldo says, the obvious ball is to Aarons - but once it does (and it's slightly overhit) the stutter step is like he's hoping Zlamal commits.

I'm in agreement, it's not a pen but to devils advocate a bit Zlamal doesn't touch the ball but he connects with Hylton's feet and tbh he's a decent chance of keeping it in play if he's not impeded. In Robinson's position you're probably going to focus on that part publicly rather than us fucking a 4 vs 2.

He's never fuckin out that breakfast rolls place

I won't lie, I've been tempted to take a jaunt up to Bath Street one day to see what it's all about. Might even meet the man himself.

Tbh, I've always just assumed it's a pal of his that has the place and he's just punting it as a favour given he's got a decent number of followers rather than him being in smashing breakfast rolls all day, every day.

Pretty much the same though, it's crossed my mind to take a wander along.

  12. Quite a revealing line in Robinson's press conference today:

    Quote

"Ultimately I've used the same players over and over again because they've been better than the other boys. Simple as that."

    Link

It follows on from him talking in the press conference prior to the County game where he was saying that:

    Quote

"I've used the same 12, 13 players over and over again because they're the boys that I've trusted."

    Link

Looking at the break down of the squad in terms of minutes played (in the spoiler below) you've got Gillespie, Gallagher and Campbell having played 3000+ mins, Polworth Grimshaw, Donnelly, Carroll and Hartley 2000+ mins and the various "forwards" 1000+...looking at that it's clear which players he "trusts".

I imagine he trusts Hartley and Tait implicitly but it'd have been interesting if there would have been as much of a difference in playing time had Dunne not picked up his injuries.

He also seems to have been hammering the "young", "inexperienced" squad line a lot in the past week or so - which is fine. It is. And yes, we'll absolutely have dips in form.

It seems notable given we very publicly shifted from that core of McDonald, Lasley, McFadden, Pearson McManus, Hammell (due to retirement etc) which again is fine - absolutely zero argument from me in terms of principle but I think it's fair to say that in each season he's been in charge Robinson's faced different problems in terms of the make up of the squad and he's learned and adapted - I suppose I'm curious to see if the "experience" side of things is something that becomes more of a consideration in future.

Then again we signed a 27 year old who had 8 caps for Denmark and he couldn't get in the team so...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Kind of related, fair fucks to Tony Watt - for someone on a short term deal he seems to be going all in with engaging with the club in terms of socials and the like. Saw he was RTing the Bois stuff from the other night and generally coming across like he's fully into being here. Good lad.

  13. The result last night was a monkey off our back in terms of our utterly shite run of form and all but confirmed Top 6 for us (12 points ahead of 7th with 12 to play for before the split). So given our generally poor record at Tynecastle I could see this being one where Hearts "want it more" as I'm not sure an unexpected European spot trumps unexpected relegation in terms of motivation.

As @Swello says above our midfield were smashing last night and we looked like we were actually having fun playing fitba' again - which was nice.

I'd happily take a draw tbqh.
