It probably will happen right enough, but it'll happen even quicker with a Chinese world champion to inspire the young players. Not a bad thing for the game as a whole, I suppose, but personally I would find it less interesting if most of the top players were Chinese. Of course they won't automatically be world class. I said nothing of the sort. It's pretty obvious, even to you I suspect, that the more people play the game in China, the more world class players there will be. It doesn't work in football for at least 3 reasons - football isn't as popular in China as it is here (and it's really not very popular in India); football is very popular in most of the world, so there is more competition, unlike snooker which is only popular in the UK (and increasingly some other countries including China); football is a team game - it's not just about having the best individuals and it's harder for any one team to dominate.

Aye, because football is as popular in China as it is in the UK.

I think it would be really bad actually, at least from a selfish British perspective. China is so huge that if the game becomes really popular there, in 20 years time the top 16 will be all, or almost all, Chinese.

Stephen Hendry just got a 147 in his match with Stuart Bingham and is 6-1 up.
  5. Kanadia - congratulations. Reina - sorry to hear that, terrible news. Because it's (generally) the best for the child, which they've chosen, one way or another*, to bring into the world. I'd make the same argument about why women shouldn't smoke while pregnant. * For the pedants, I exclude women who became pregnant after a rape, or whose contraceptive failed through no fault of their own (eg didn't just forget to take the pill).
  6. I'm no breastfeeding nazi, but mothers and prospective mothers who have no intention of breastfeeding and don't try at all do annoy me. If they try it and it doesn't work for them or if they're simply not able, then fair enough. Very sad. Puts things in perspective.
  7. I think you've answered your own question there.
  8. Correct. And on top of all of that, even if you have mastered the wonky angles and double streams, there is a remarkable amount of spray that comes from the tip and spray back after the main jet has hit the toilet. Assuming there's a reasonable pressure, it is quite literally impossible to leave the toilet rim completely unscathed. Ladies, if you think it's easy, try it for yourself. Hold your boyfriend's / husband's / stranger's wee fella while he's doing a piss. I bet most of it ends on the seat or the floor.
  9. Great info there, thanks. Haha - sometimes I think that too!
  10. Cheers for the suggestions. I should have mentioned we don't have Sky, so we've got a limited choice.
  11. When do kids usually get interested in TV? I've heard some parents say they stick their 6 month olds in front of the box for a couple of hours a day to shut them up. But even if I wanted to do that, it wouldn't work because Callum (now 16 months) has never shown any more than a fleeting interest in the TV. I've nothing against him watching a moderate amount of educational TV - any suggestions about what to try him with?
  12. Not a good week for accident and illness. Callum saw fit to head-butt the radiator on Monday, and almost immediately his forehead swelled up to the size of an egg (probably an exaggeration but it was huge). It was the first time I'd totally panicked but eventually got him down to A+E, where they said he was fine, apart from the egg sized lump. Then on Thursday morning we got him up in the morning to fine he'd vomited all over his cot. Today I got a call from the nursery to say I needed to collect him as he'd had 3 loose nappies in quick succession. I'd just got home and lifted him out of the car seat when he promptly vomited all over me. After 3 more bouts of diarrhoea he seemed to be getting back to normal and vomited all over my wife and the carpet. The last time he had diarrhoea and vomiting he passed it on to us and we got it much worse. It's shaping up to be a very messy weekend.

  15. We tried several different things and eventually the one thing that worked well was Carobel - a simple feed thickener. Different things will work for different babies though. We also tried Colief, Infacol and Gaviscon, plus a couple of others that I have forgotten.
  16. Some cracking photos above, especially the one of the wee lad eating his eggs! Here's my wee laddie:
  17. Now the wee man's got hand, foot and mouth disease! Although apparently it's not the same thing that got several million animals put down and burned several years back.
  18. My wee boy's just caught chicken pox. Everyone's been saying how it's unusual to get it so young (just over a year), but it doesn't seem to be bothering him all that much as I think it's less severe the younger you are. We don't know where he got it from as we haven't seen anyone with it. Most likely place is nursery, but they're denying any of the other kids there have had it. Shame his lovely soft skin has been ruined, albeit temporarily. Aye, fresh from source. Tasted ok, but was far too warm for my liking. I reckon chilled it would be nicer than cow's milk.
  19. Callum's a daredevil (or an idiot) - he would throw himself down the stairs as often as he could if we let him.
  20. Anybody else's kids learn how to climb the stairs before being able to walk? Callum is just coming up to his first birthday and is climbing the stairs at any opportunity - he's just done it 3 times in row. But he still can't stand without support.
  21. We certainly get it on prescription. Good to here your wee girl is getting better.
  22. Yeah, that's the experience we (mainly my wife to be honest) had as well, although your poor wee one sounds even worse than my boy Callum was. We tried several different medicines, each with varying degrees of success. Gaviscon, Colief, Infacol, Carobel and changed his milk to Neocate. The clear winner was Carobel, which is basically just a feed thickener, but it almost stopped the sickness and the post-feed screaming. To some extent he just grew out of it as well.
  23. The point is this (assume for the sake of argument that the threshold for paying higher rate tax is £40k): family A has one person working and earning £41k - the family earns £41k gross and can't get the full childcare vouchers. Family B has two people working and both earning £39k - the family earns £78k gross, almost double family A, and does get the childcare vouchers. This is clearly unfair. While it's not clearly unfair, I would also dispute your point that it's a "loophole" that higher rate tax payers have been getting tax relief on full amount of vouchers. The reason they get a higher level of relief is that they pay a higher marginal tax rate. If they weren't paying more tax in the first place, they wouldn't be able to save more tax. You can legitmately make a case to say that higher rate tax payers shouldn't get the same benefit as lower earners, but that's a matter of politcal opinion. It's certainly not a nonsense or a loophole.
