  1. You're bang on, his recruitment was excellent. The difference between the players John Coughlin signed in the summer of 2010 to the boys Irons brought in the following year were miles ahead. Irons signed in Ross McMillan, Martyn Corrigan, Brown Ferguson, Andy Rodgers and Stewart Kean and the following summer brought in Scot Buist, John Gemmell and Bryan Hodge (albeit he didn't get the chance to work with them for very long). There were a few duds, as you'd expect from any manager, but the hits were bigger than the misses. The only blemish was the 10-week run of bad form between December and March of 2011/12 - as mentioned earlier, that team should have been good enough to finish in the top four, especially with all the investment that went into the team over the final third of the season (Kenny Deuchar, Nicky Devlin, Michael Devlin, Grant Anderson and Kieran Millar coming in on loan) - but other than that, Irons' first spell was broadly positive.
  2. Davie Irons will be an interesting appointment. He's probably not the most exciting prospect but he did us a good turn in his first 18-month spell in charge of the club - the survival of the 2010/11 season was exceptional and some of the football we played in 2011/12 was excellent. Looking back, we should have finished in the Championship play-offs that year. He also seems to have a strong affinity with Stenhousemuir, something you don't often see at this level. I do worry that he'll have to unexpectedly pack it in again due to his work commitments but I hope that isn't the case. The recruitment over the summer was poor and we don't have a great group of players to work with at the moment but if he can get the best out of Wullie Gibson, Thomas Halleran and Mark McGuigan, we should have enough to move away from the bottom of the table and compete with the top four. I hope.
  3. Stuart Balmer has left the club (which was expected) and so too has Jamie McKernon (which wasn't). According to a short statement on the website, he asked to leave because of travelling commitments. We've lost two central midfielders in the last week and suddenly look a little bit light there.
  4. I've never signed up to the SFSA newsletter but I get it sent to my inbox. Am I one of their 70,000 members? Is Paul Goodwin GDPR compliant?
  5. I thought the Brechin attacker leaned forward, knocking Scott McLaughlin off balance and sending him crashing down. McLaughlin would have won the header and cleared the ball otherwise.
  6. Watching back the match highlights - why does the commentator always mention a player's former clubs? David Hopkirk was described as "the former Derry City man" heading home "former Kilmarnock man" Wullie Gibson's cross. Bring back Campbell Hughes!
  7. Good to know they're coming. Fair play to the bold Steven Dixon, you have to admire his hustle.
  8. Are there any highlights from this match? I see Hedge TV have published an interview with Mark Wilson so I'm hoping the highlights will drop at some point soon.
  9. I've seen us lose to Preston Athletic and Threave Rovers in the Scottish Cup in the past and, by gum, it put them on the map!
  10. The first episode of the new series of A View from the Terrace is being filmed next week and rest assured, we've cleared the schedule to dedicate the full hour to discussing Lloyd Wilson's performance.
  11. I would agree with this 100 per cent. Scott McLaughlin has been absolutely okay so far this season but he was brought into the team primarily for his coaching, maybe filling in the starting XI when required. When Colin McMenamin and Stuart Balmer were putting this team together they had a 4-4-2 formation in mind but such is the lack of quality in the middle of the park, we've had to play a 3-5-2 to compensate for it; with only David Marsh and Andy Munro in central defence, McLaughlin's had to fill in as the third centre-back every week. Come to think of it, if we're going for a back four, he'd still get picked ahead of Aidan McIlduff.
  12. I'd forgotten about that! I'm sure Scott McLaughlin said he punched him after a game. What a laugh this is going to be!
  13. Interesting stuff. Davie Irons is joining the club in a similar situation to the one he found when he took charge in late 2010 - a team with no real direction circling the drain (albeit relegation into the old Third Division). He brought in some tremendous players - most notably Eric Paton and Michael Devlin on loan from Hamilton Academical - and somehow pulled us away from the foot of the table. Yes, Alloa Athletic's collapse played a big part but some of the games over the latter part of the season were incredible. Paton's goal at the Recs, Devlin's last-minute winner against Ayr United, the match on the final day of the season against Peterhead, all brilliant memories! There are some decent players in this team, I do believe that. I just don't know how you fix it.
  14. Don't think so. In central midfield we have Thomas Halleran, Wullie Gibson, Jamie McKernon, Dylan Dykes and Marky Munro so I can't imagine there's any need for another one. I have to say, I do have high hopes for Brandon Luke and think he could be just what we're looking for, providing he gets a run of games. Regarding your previous point, I reckon David Hopkirk might be due a start too.
  15. No doubt about it, this is a must-win game for both sides if they have any aspirations of moving away from the wrong end of League 2. Before the weekend's game against Cowdenbeath, I reckoned Stenhousemuir could have taken seven points from their meetings with the Blue Brazil, Brechin City and Stirling Albion; after our deserved 3-0 pumping, I'm now very worried about our ability to get something from Saturday's game and I'm concerned about where our season is going. On paper, a home match with Brechin is probably the most straightforward assignment of the season - a team we didn't lose to at all last season, even when we were reduced to 10 men on two occasions - but I'm not so sure now. We've been rubbish at home in the league this season. We looked sprightly enough when we came back into it against Albion Rovers (before chucking it away), we were largely poor against Edinburgh City and even worse against Cowden. Why is this? I can't explain it. We haven't won a home match since beating Montrose on 9 February! If we don't win this match, I worry for Colin McMenamin. The crowd were rightly angry at the end of Saturday's match and I don't think they'll have the stomach for something similar for a second week running. It's easier said than done but we have to encourage our defenders to play through the midfield rather than launching big punts up towards Mark McGuigan, they need to get Alan Cook more involved, and they need to get Thomas Halleran on the ball whenever possible. Whenever we go behind, we seem to lose our composure and try to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible. The second-half performance against Cowden really wasn't acceptable and the manner in which we lost the second and third goals was embarrassing. That said, I honestly can't think of any changes I'd make on Saturday. I don't think we've got the options from the bench, David Hopkirk aside: - Kieran Anderson - Mark McGuigan - - Alan Cook - Thomas Halleran - Wullie Gibson - Jamie McKernon - Chris O'Neil - - Scott McLaughlin - David Marsh - Andy Munro - - Graeme Smith - The pressure is on! Home win.
  16. I think it's a bit unfair to call him "hopeless" - there's a decent enough player in there somewhere, provided he's allowed to forgo all defensive duties and concentrate on linking play further up the park. He can pass the ball around well enough but that's about it. I don't think he's quite what we need at the moment and that's reflected in his demotion to the bench in recent weeks. Thomas Halleran is a far better option in the middle of the park.
  17. The only reason Kieran Gibbons was still at the club was because he was somehow given a two-year contract last summer. When Colin McMenamin took charge of the team, he fell right down the pecking order, only featuring occasionally, and was even less likely to feature since Wullie Gibson signed on earlier in the month. What was Gibbons good at? He couldn't tackle, was often reckless, couldn't be trusted, couldn't really pass the ball, wasn't disciplined enough to sit in front of the defence and wasn't much of a goal threat either. A nothing player. He did, however, set up Mark McGuigan's goal against Falkirk and for that alone I wish him well.
  18. It's back on TV two weeks today! Friday 27 September, 10:30pm, BBC Scotland channel (115 on your Sky box)
  19. Waterford at home in the Tunnock's Caramel Wafer Cup! A sensational draw once again. I was hoping for an overseas team again so I'm very pleased.
  20. I had a look through that Airdrieonians team that got humped by Stenhousemuir just before Christmas - remember Daniel Boateng? Ooft!
