  1. I'm probably in the minority on here of not being too upset at the news concerning Aggy. Bringing players back seldom replicates previous days, and to be honest I'd rather we looked elsewhere anyway - Aggy had a lot of good moments here but there were also some very anonymous passages too.

  2. Craving some signings/more rumours/re-signings/more gossip etc.

I'm like a junkie needing my signing fix. Patience may be the key but I've got f**k all :(

I guess some of it will depend on who has been offered, and who accepts new deals, so to this end I expect Aitken will have put on some sort of time limit - I hope so anyway.

As regards this lad Thomson, the last time I checked, being an ardent Rangers fan and tweeting about it not a crime; God knows we had Mark Crilly missing a Sons about 15 years ago in order to see his beloved Celtic in an Old Firm game.

If he pulls on the jersey, gives 100% and hopefully scores a few goals then that would be enough for me - everything else is just chaff. But let's see if he signs first......

  3. Knew him well. Willie Muir from Helensburgh. Boghead announcer from early 70s until mid 90s, I was friendly with his son. Willie died last year.

I'll let OKI3 tell my favourite anecdote about Willie.

Aye, Willie was a character and no mistake.

Anyway, Sons were playing a midweek game at Boghead around 1986; at half-time Willie ploughed thro a list of British clubs who were in European action that night.  And then...'Watford 1....er, er, aye, well, a team wi' a funny name ah cannae pronounce 0'.

For the record it was Kaiserslautern of Germany.  Fair tickled the sparse gathering I can tell you.

  4. To be honest a centre-half with any pace is something I'd forgotten existed! I think he was a better player than Flash, and probably every bit as good as Barry. But I remember him being tipped as the next Phil Jagielka and then being hugely disappointed that he wasn't the best defender to ever play for us.

Nobody is as good as Ching. 40 years old and still scoring for Clyde

Findlay was clearly far, far too good for us (or anyone else at this level) and was the best ball playing defender I can remember us having. Scarily good with his feet.

You obviously never saw Neill Collins then......

  5. Anyway, who saw Bucky's Maw on Reporting Scotland the nicht ?  She is the editor of the Falkirk Herald and incredibly wanted to talk about the local economy vis-a-vis the Holyrood Election rather than where her boy will be launching 85-yard forward passes next season - can you believe that ??

  6. I don't think we should lose sight of the fact that had Christian Nade not joined when he did then there would have been a very good chance of us entering the play-offs this week, not to mention a couple of flashes of Willie Gibson which helped get 6 points on the board early on.

Whilst 8th place is very merit-worthy I really hope some hard calls are made over the next few weeks, especially as to the balance of the squad. The harsh likelihood is however that quite a number of players who were in attendance last night will be offski of their own account - such is modern football.

  7. Popped down today myself.

Was some form of motorbike lessons taking place in the car park. Had visions of me being the only c**t ever to die renewing a Dumbarton season ticket.

There was also a wee guy floating about reception I've never seen before.

Yeah, I saw him too - apparently his name is Phinn, Nicholas Phinn.

  8. Watching a team like Dumbarton is like investing emotion into an account every week; just occasionally you get the chance to make a withdrawal. Today was such a day, and from the buzzing pre-match hospitality featuring a truly superb singing act courtesy of a local businessman who regularly backs the club, to Garry's strike and the stalwart defending afterwards, this was an afternoon to both savour and remember with pride.

Massive congrats to all the players, the two Stevies and the DFC Directors; you youngsters on here had better realise that we are all living the dream right now !

And is there a more angry support anywhere than St Mirren's ?

  9. Jumpers for goalposts, a lift over the turnstile and a clip round the ear and a mind how you go from the local bobby. Chips at a penny a bag and a bucket of herring down the quay for a tanner. The fitba' was, notwithstanding what you've said, not very good down Bogheid way.

Indeed, distance tends to lend enchantment, and it's hard to imagine a repeat today of the Hamilton versus Clyde fixture of 11th March 1950 when an area of the Douglas Park pitch was cordoned off around an unexploded bomb.

  10. I think it might have been the one full season that Brian Fairley spent with us. There was some rumour of an alleged betting scandal involving Morton players. I definitely wouldn't name Alex Williams as one of these though. Pretty sure Morton were 10 up with 12 to play for and they made a complete Jordan Spieth of it. That taught me never to take anything for granted when it comes to football.

Yes, I seem to remember an already-relegated Stenny winning at Cappielow towards the end of that season, despite (unusually) having a Jack Russell terrier at left-back.

  11. I wasn't there last night but I was taken today by the comments of Rangers-supporting workmates, who to a man and woman were really impressed by Sons' defensive showing. As one guy said, quite a few teams may well have buckled early on in such an occasion.

But we certainly didn't and that really gives me some hope and reassurance about the morale in the camp. Add to that the fact that Livvy and ourselves have each taken one point from the last two games, with ours being arguably the harder shift.

So what happens now ? Anything less than a Livvy win at Cappielow should be seen as a minorbonus and should that happen, then we really need to be fired up for QoS next Tuesday. Stevie Aitken has got to firstly convince HIMSELF that three home games in succession can take us towards survival and then get that message across to the players. Here's hoping.

  12. To be fair, the last 6 months under Murray was no better than we have been seeing this season. We also had no attack whatsoever in that period either so we weren't having a go at anyone really. The difference between this season and the last couple is that Murray managed to get us safe by this point in the season (more or less), meaning we didn't have to worry about the teams below us having a chance of catching us.

Murray had some astute loanees like Chris Kane and Stuart Findlay and also the excellent one-season presence of Paul McGinn.  He also benefitted from Livvy being deducted 5 points last season.

But please, can we finally now consign Ian Murray to the record books ??

  13. Whoa, whoa, everyone, we're a wee bit off play-off speculation just yet.

And speculation about what team should pick up points in what games is also a mugs charter; if the form book were the case we'd never have beaten Hibs twice at home and lost to Alloa.

From now on in, it's all about who does what in every minute of every fixture, starting for us next Saturday versus Morton. I keep reading that we have the personnel to stay in this Division - I now need to see the evidence for myself.

  14. Yip. led to the greatest ever DFC headline in the Times ( not the Evening version ).

    'Cruyff: Ajax,Barcelona,Cosmos and Dumbarton'

    I've still got it somewhere

And I've got one from the then still-august Glasgow Herald which read 'Cruyff Is The Target Of Dumbarton Bid'.

The deal fell thro as the Dutch maestro was not assured of an automatic start, such was Graham Fyfe's form at that time.

  15. As someone said, effort over ability certainly triumphed in Chiz' case, and I can't say I'm surprised if there was a set-to between he and Chaplain.

I always thought that in that team, Chaplain was one who had loads of ability, but didn't always make the efforts so I could see where that came from.

At the end of the day, the team from that year worked really well together and there are a couple that I'd have back now, but based on ability alone, Chiz wouldn't be near it, but when you're talking about sheer effort and playing for the shirt, I can't think of anyone who'd be higher on such a list than Sir Iain of Chisholm.

    #weareallChizzy

Chizzy was the sort of bameroo who lives much longer in the memory than players who had 1000 times more ability.  We shall remember him long after thoughts of say Lee Mair have dissipated into the mists of time.

  16. We fair love a conspiracy down the Rock.  We've been pumped 6-0 and 5-0 before this season, I didn't see anyone talking about behind the scenes stuff there, just that we were pish on the day.  Did we have any behind the scenes issues when we handed Hibs their arse for the second time this season?  Or when Falkirk came and left with only a point?  Unless there is some substance to this "behind the scenes" stuff then the suggestion of it does absolutely nothing to help this situation.

Saturday clearly isn't acceptable, Stevie will know that.  The stuff he says in the press is to protect his players, we all remember Ian Murray infamously ripping his team to shreds after defeat at Alloa and what results did that yield us?  Sleep-walking towards the end of the season as the players searched for deals elsewhere.  I'd say the fact that Stevie has said everything he can to take the heat of the players would suggest the opposite from any of dressing room problems being mentioned.

Is it just me or do we have a lot more Dumbarton posters in the wake of a heavy defeat?  Maybe I'm being unfair but there seems to be a few on here that sit all season itching to stick the boot in (not aimed at you OKI).

With respect Moonster, to concede six goals in less than an hour for the second time in a season is a bit more than a heavy defeat.  The two 5-0 hidings weren't just quite as grim, but they happened just the same.

And it's precisely because of the highly creditable performances against Hibs and Falkirk, for example, that I'm questioning what is going on.  There is no conspiracy theory, but with a number of experienced players and a relatively inexperienced management team in the same dressing room I'm merely wondering if there are tensions with money, tactics, formations, respect even which are contributing to these massive mood swings on the pitch.

I can't find any logic for it, but it wouldn't be the first time that a 'show us your medals' situation arose at a club.  As for Stevie Aitken, he seems to have found this level a lot tougher than he maybe expected, and he has undoubtedly made a number of errors; if I was him and SF however, I would now sit everyone down after training and have an honest and frank discussion about the way forward from here.

The modern footballer is mercenary almost to a man, and short-term deals are everywhere, but surely the club, the management and the fans has the right to expect everyone to unite in common cause.  On Saturday's evidence we might have some work to do there.

  17. Our away form is the joint worst in the entire country. We've picked up 9 points away from home, the same as Dundee United and East Stirling.

That is simply nowhere near good enough, and if we are to slip into the playoffs, it will be the reason why.

I've covered it on the other thread, but today's performance was one of the worst in years. No fight, no shape, no quality, no commitment, no organisation and at the end it barely looked like anyone cared.

    ^^^Seething

As someone else posted on the match thread, it would be interesting to know if there are any issues within the club right now, as yesterday's performance seems to have gone well beyond a straightforward horsing.

  18. Strongly agree with the points being raised here. I was taken to my first game by my Dad as a five year old and the rest is history. The club was far friendlier then. Prices were very low for kids to get in, you could wander into Boghead on training nights to watch your heroes and chat to them whilst collecting autographs. I didn't dream of supporting anyone else.

Today's club appears to have different priorities. I'm consistently made to feel like an inconvenience when I ring the club for info. When told that I have to attend the ground, I reply that I live a 2 hour flight away, and can I arrange for pick up on match day, the impatience is palpable.

Christ, look at the online shop. I can't even buy a top or a scarf as a present.

The club appears to see itself as a business that doesn't need to open it's doors to the community to encourage future custom. A strange business model. The club in the Boghead days was far more welcoming.

I really hope someone at Dumbarton FC is reading this, and whilst I back the Sons to the hilt there is no doubting the truth of the above.

Unfortunately that word inconvenience is all too relevant in this connection, as this seems to be far too often how the public is viewed down there.
